My mom was big into gardening and growing small veggies in the balcony but after she passed away no one takes care of the plants as much as she used to. I feel bad for not doing the same and am trying to learn all this so i can keep my mother memories alive through those plants and flowers. As a kid i used to tell her "Chi chi mummy gandi matti aur kachra" and she used to tell me about composting. This video reminded me of her a lot. Thanks for this video and thanks for teaching me a noob at this.

Happy to hear that you are composting !! as long as you maintain the composting process aerobically ,you should be doing good !The pile will attract soldier fly that will lay eggs in it and the maggots are the outcome...they do a great job in the break down and can be left alone...make sure the pile is turned and it maintains a good moisture balance ....happy composting!!

Hi mam, this is Vidya aim very impressed by your videos and started kitchen waste to do compost and it has been started since 1 month and it turned black almost and it is wet little bit and kept the bin in full shade , I have a doubt should I keep the bin in the sunlight compulsory and I have one more doubt should I dry the compost in the sunlight after it is ready.

Hello mam. .inspired by all the composting ideas ,I started composting an year back and was self satisfied that I could reduce so much of land fills..recently one compost bin was broken by my kid and I started using a plastic bin which turned into a mess (lot of big black worms surrounded it and had a horrible foul smell) and recently I developed back pain too lifting the compost bins .I want bins in smaller sizes..no problem kerping 6 to 7 bins in my balcony. .can u pls suggest me on this mam ..i just dont want to give up composting for all these reasons..

For the first time composting ,we need some thing to kick start the breakdown and introducing the microorganisms is important...it hastens the process and helps in breakdown of the organic matter ... a spoonful of Butter milk also does the job .

Hey Santhosh! Is the compost getting enough air to keep dry? You are seeing too many maggots I think. You've got to keep it all dry enough to control these. The khambas we used in the video have lots of perforation for air flow.

Composting is a great way to keep your soil healthy, hence healthy soil equals healthy plants which equals less pest problems and healthy veggies and fruit. Compost tea is a good way to give seedlings a kick start.

If you are in India, it's easy enough to find clay pots with holes for airing their contents. Else, try large buckets or tubs and ensure they have an airy lid. :)

Or you can use 5-gallon buckets that typically people need to discard in an eco-friendly manner. These have paint (check out rusell peters on "paynt") so they need to be rinsed well.
