Thanks for inspiring and supporting us "micro farmers." I love knowing there are others out there who are trying their hand at growing their own food. My daughter and I enjoy your videos. We started growing mint on our terrace two years ago and have graduated to lemon verbena, rosemary, thyme, parsley, tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, white potatoes, chives, green beans, sweet and hot peppers, kale, lettuce, garlic, onions, squash, fennel, oats, watermelon, cucumbers, carrots, and now we've added grapes. Between all the veggies, my daughter has added flowers -- petunias, plumbago, roses, gardenias, and more, to attract pollinators. The formerly empty terrace is now the center of our home, where we have tea, eat lunch and meditate every day. Our visitors absolutely love it as well. So, thanks for your efforts, Lakshmi.

Very informative video. I am beginning to grow in containers because the heavy clay soil is too hard to dig here (near Philadelphia, PA) Even my small tiller bounces off it when it is dry. Thank you.

@chaiwithlaksmi Hi, I live in a terraced house in England and I have a small back garden but because it doesn't get very much sunshine I have decided to try growing vegetables in containers in my front garden. It is bare and covered with pebbles but it gets alot of sunshine. So far I have 4 big buckets of soil/compost mixture (which I still need to cut some drainage holes at the bottom of) My neighbours are looking at me like I'm crazy, but tbh I couldn't care less!

Glad you like this video guys! :) I used sand bags around my rows of pots or at the mouth of the drain hole to prevent the soil mix from getting washed into the drains. Also, if your balcony or terrace is part of a rainwater harvesting system, then, a) you have to be careful about soil entering the water system and b) you have to avoid harmful chemicals altogether.

Very interesting indeed. I have also developed an organic terrace garden on the seventh floor of our building (In Mumbai) by recycling kitchen waste and other waste like plastic, discarded building bamboos, brick debris etc. This video will show that you can get amazing yields even in pots on a terrace. Here’s the link. Organic Terrace Gardening

This is great work and I encourage this . Its something a lot of houses do in Kerala already and I have seen it.great work.My only question is when you say mix soap powder with chilly isn't there chemicals in the soap and as a result I think I wouldn't call it organic.Isn't spraying compost tea an alternate option and a better one? I recently came across a company called BioBee which uses nature and other insects to naturally fight off pests.

nice video to motivate starters. but its not good at all to use plastics for growing veggies because of BPA and hell no for used paint buckets lot of heavy metal contamination, the whole point of being organic will be screwed. It is always better and safe to use earthen pots for growing veggies..

+Lucia Bakova She says 50 grams of chilli with 1/2 or 1 glass of water. Use the grinder/mixer to grind it well and keep aside the mixture for a day. Strain this mixture along with some soap powder/detergent, vegetable oil & water. Viola, your chilli spray to be used on the plants is ready!

I hear so many good things about that coco peat/coir she used am sure easier to find in India as they produce it there ,hard to find here in southern california gonna have to mail order it in small bricks..they say it doesn't get hard or dry up like peat moss does where you can't get water to flow into your dirt in containers good for making mix for houseplants too..enviroment friendly .anyone understand about how to make that plant oil I barely could understand don't want to make it too strong or use wrong ingredients..can I use any dry chiles? how much oil /garlic etc ..
@ChaiwithlakshmiIn
@ChaiwithlakshmiIn 10 жыл бұрын
Hey! Sorry about the delayed response. So, the plant 'oil' isn't actually oil. You just grind some chillies and let that mix soak in water overnight. Spray this water on the plants the next morning to keep bugs off. Hope that helps.

thanks lots for reply ..gonna mix some up guess any dried chiles will work but wonders if hotter the better lol? just sprayed a mix of baking soda 1tb to gallon of water to spray on powdery mildew, and need a good organic way to spray pests..I do worry about ladybugs and bees though ..happy gardening all

cute girl, nice ideas, but simplistically presented. get the old lady in there to talk about how easy it is, but it's not and there is a reason agriculture is the way it is today - corporate - but messed up. it we want to change it we have to do more than just pretend it is easy, it's not. best practices have to be developed and transmitted through the generations. not much here, we all know the plants go in the dirt and get watered! ;-)
