Great video for helping others lose the fear of testing. The resulting numbers of your test would indicate a serious failure as we all know you cannot “wear” an engine down to those compression levels as it would not start at even higher numbers than you got on your gauge. So either your testing device/ configuration had flaws or like I said earlier major failure possibly cracked pistons even. One gentleman questioned the compression release and you mentioned it was disconnected. I still would have toyed with it while cranking to see what effects it may have had as well. Enjoyed your vid!

Thank you for making this series. I just bought a ym2000 non running. I’m excited to get it going.

You're welcome! It will be worth it. The YM2000 is the best/easiest to rebuild.

Looking forward to the rebuild. Hope you get it running.

Thx. I will!

I just picked up a Yanmar 2210 with that same 2 cylinder diesel motor. It needs a head gasket as far as I can tell which shouldn't be too difficult to replace, especially for the price I payed for it
@MattsShop4 жыл бұрын
It should be pretty easy to do. A head gasket is pretty cheap if that's all it is.

I have a John Deere 430 garden tractor with a 3 cyl Yanmar engine in it. It doesn't have the power that it use to have so I am thinking maybe a blown head gasket. I'm not sure though. I'll have to get one of those compression testers but it looks like the tester you bought will work in the glow plug hole. The vintage of my tractor is the first year they came out in 1984. I also know the water pump isn't pumping coolant in the engine and I have already bought that. When I start the motor, and it does start very easily, I get a puff of white smoke then it runs clean. Does that sound like a head gasket to you? This is the first time I've ever worked on a diesel engine before. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing but I guess I'll figure it out as I go. I have also put in a new thermostat and that didn't help anything.

It doesn't sound like a head gasket to me. Have you adjusted the valves? That is somthing that needs to be done as maintenance. Is there water in the oil?
@600dominator3 жыл бұрын
H i it might be worth noting a proper adapter has a fairly small hole up through it and should be roughly the shape and size of your original injector to get a more accurate reading. Using your setup changes the compression ratio far too much to give a good reading.
@MattsShop3 жыл бұрын
It seems like the same amount of pressure gets to the gauge. Exactly what do you mean?
@dapetik3 жыл бұрын
You're essentially adding volume to the cylinder with that hose. I would think that would reduce the compression ratio a tad and probably cause a slightly lower psi
@motorbyclist3 жыл бұрын
@@dapetik that's what the Schrader valve is for otherwise the tester is useless as he explained. There is also a small effect from the missing injector body but the test is still indicative regardless

I would re test with a deferent compression tester. Those pittsborough tester are horrible
@MattsShop9 ай бұрын
I guess this one was pretty good. The engine was blown 🤣
@davesaam43083 жыл бұрын
Could you start the engine with that compression?
@MattsShop3 жыл бұрын
Nope! I'm rebuilding the engine for part 4 of my series.
@rexsmith64953 жыл бұрын
You have something not correct, even with carboned rings etc you should get much better test, outside of hole in piston ,something radical your test should be better result
@MattsShop3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there has to be internal engine damage when you get readings this low.

I just looked at harbor freight website and my local store. Evidently item 62594 has been discontinued. Could you confirm that adapter size? Thanks a lot. I thought someone said it was like 19x1.5 or something. Not sure.

The fitting Matt used in my kit from Amazon is #4 on parts list it is called 1/8” NPT quick coupler BTW this kit is a combination of SAE and MM for foreign and domestic I went through the top of injector instead of side on mine. Here’s how I did. I first took a #7 adapter m12x1.25F-m18x1.5m I sawed off about a quarter of an inch so it wouldn’t bottom out then put a 45 degree angle on it with a 1”x30” belt sander then I used a flat washer between this and my next fitting #6 m12x1.25(m)-7/16”-20(m) adapter next I used #15 7/16”-20m-7/16”F -20 which is the 90 degree fitting next was #5 7/16”-20F which has the coupler you hook to your gauge. To block off the side I used a 1/4”NPT M to 1/8”NPT F reducer bushing like Matt first used but I used a 1/8” M plug instead of the #4 fitting that he used. I also used a heavy grey Teflon tape on the first two fittings coming out of the injector and plug on side

@@krstoner53 what engine were you working on? The 3 cylinder yanmar? That's what I have. I got the top half of one of the injectors unscrewed but debated just trying to see if I could put gauge right where fuel line attached but thought maybe pressure reading would be off because of tiny injector orifices. . I'll look at your reply a bit closer when I get the kit and the tractor in front of me. Thanks.

Your welcome! Mine is also a 3 cyl YM2220D and I have the same style injectors on my JD900HC also a 3 banger but a different style is on my JD790 which is also made by Yanmar and a 3 cylinder. Is yours the same style as Matt’s in this video? I presumed it was. If so I would gut it as he did so as not to damage the internal parts and give it a good cleaning especially the orifice. As Matt said earlier they used this style in many different models. Look at his video on injector cleaning. I left a comment how I did mine under a Jonathan, If your having trouble removing your injector from tractor this might help.
