Thank you for explaining the verb endings. I studied German but couldn’t understand Swiss German. Who knew that they use mir for first person plural? The plural endings on verbs are also so different from German. Thanks for this great explanation. Diana

Actually it's not true that we only have 2 tenses. We also use a future tense but mostly in specific situations or meanings. Still, we could theoretically use this tense a lot more but we just go for the easier present or a construction using "to go", actually it's like "going to xy" in English. "I'm going to swim." --> "Ich gang go schwümme." In this sentence the "go" is like the "to" in English, some kind of linking word to the verb. It's actually quite hard to explain when to use which one. But there are verbs which ask more for this construction and others that don't; or there is a small difference in using present simple or "going to". For example: "Ich gang hüt go schwümme." --> "I'm going to swim today." This is a general statement about the action without any further explanations or additional information. It would sound weird if you just said: "Hüt schwümi." But if you say "Today, I'm going to swim ten laps." you might rather say "Hüt schwümi 10 Runde." Although some might also prefer the "going to" construction. Sometimes it sounds more "right" and sometimes less. So it's more the cases where you normally would NOT use the present simple that are worth mentioning. Moreover: We can also use a "past perfect". But this is quite rare. But we can say "Är hät's gseh gha." --> "He had seen it." But it's perfectly correct to just say "Är hät's gseh." which we use in 99.99 percent of the situations. It's maybe a question of "style" and dialect. What we really don't have, and this is quite a cool thing!, is the past simple. So as a learner you don't have to memorize all the different past simple forms of each verb. In High German ("Standard German") you have to learn them. The good thing about the past perfect is, that you only need to be able to conjugate "to have" and "to be" and to learn the past participle of the verbs which is not too hard.

One shoud also mention that in the first person, you can drop the "e"-ending and we do that very often (depening on the dialect as well). That happens especially in many combinations for being able to link the words smoothly. For example: "Ich mache en Chueche." --> "I'm making a cake." one would rather say "Ich mach en Chueche." because you have two "e"s following each other.
