Just hard plumbed 2 sinks with PVC, cuz that's how we roll here in Tennessee. With union at the P trap, it can still be disassembled to clean the trap. By placing the P trap as high as possible, was able to include a Wye clean out at the deck. Worked out great. Thanks for the video.

I didn't think to put a cleanout on the final product, but I sure wish I had. It took some work to get enough distance on the trapper. At least I knew about the siphon issue, but didn't know exactly what the minimum length should be, so I just made it as long as I could. Thanks for the handy tips like this during the installation!!!

You are a saint! We are in a house built in the 1940s by my grandpa. It’s a underground poured concrete and there’s no in the wall plumbing as it’s inside each cabinet, except for the washing machine which just has an open 2” y, down two feet to a p trap. All our waste lines share one 6” cast iron drain as well as one 2” vent pipe that goes through the roof. Sooooo that being said: all I need to do to avoid siphoning the trap is allow at least 3” long straight diagonal abs going away from the trap? Because this is a code nightmare and I can not pull a plumbing permit. (the municipality’s inspector suggested he not walk into the house as we would be required to pull permits which would require things to be up to code to have said permits signed off on) you just answered every issue we’ve encountered with in just one of your videos. I just wanted to make sure I have this right.

Nice job, I like the basket strainers you have. The ones we have in the UK are different, plastic and held in place with a screw instead of a large nut. But that’s a nice neat installation, I like to do nice clean jobs like that myself. It takes time and sometimes a bit of thought depending on the setup you are presented with but is always worth the attention to detail and being done properly. Same goes for the copper pipes and any other parts you add, I like to have them clean and functional and as neat and out of the way as possible. A well fitted waste should be able to drain when the cold tap is on full with no restriction. I also like the addition of a clean out for service in case of blockages.

I recently replaced both basket strainers in the kitchen. 6 months later, both leaked. Your's is the first video that I have watched that used the rubber washer on the top instead of plumbers putty. This does make sense to me as the putty seems to dry and harden. Also, washing dishes and pans seem to deflect the bottom of the sink and further compromise the putty seal. Does your experience prove out the practice of putting the black rubber gasket in the sink and then put the basket through the gasket?

Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I do have a question, though. You are probably the only person using the rubber gasket on the flange of the strainer basket. I recently removed an old IKEA kitchen sink base cabinet made of particle board. The board had slowly disintegrated and was not very pleasant to look at. The new one I made myself as I had my own ideas how to use the space. I used marine plywood, an absolutely excellent material. When I disassembled the old cabinet, I got an unpleasant surprise. I removed the doors, the sink, and the plumbing. Now, I live in climate with fairly warm and humid summers. When I started to detach the cabinet itself and thus separated the back wall of it from the kitchen wall, I got the surprise, the space between the walls was filled with cockroach like insects, some twenty of them. I had never seen them outside this space, so no cockroaches (they like wander around and also have antennas). I redesign the cabinet and removed the back wall, I cleaned and seal all cracks and holes in the kitchen wall and painted it with a heat and moisture resistant paint, Conclusion: Don't have a back wall of the kitchen sink cabinet. It can be a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and insects.

One thing I have done is to completely seal every opening and all bottom cabinet seams underneath the sink with caulk, (expandable foam for larger holes). Because more than likely at some point you WILL have a leak and the caulk will prevent the seepage of a leak into the cabinet seams and/or floor, swelling and ruining your cabinet, flooring, etc. If you really want to get creative you can then drill a 3/8 hole at the front bottom of the cabinet over the toe kick area such that any leaks that do occur will be contained in that sealed cabinet basin and drained out that hole right at the tow kick where you will be notified more quickly, (don't forget to seal the edges of the exposed wood of the hole you drilled as well as The cabinet the floor seems to prevent the water from seeping under the cabinets). The other thing to do is install independent water sensors or sensors tied to an alarm system every place where a water leak is possible - kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, mechanical rooms, and even behind refrigerators that have a water connection. People that have had this water damage readily and eagerly do these things. Those that haven't will wish they had. Finally, I do the very same thing along the cabinet to floor seams inside the dishwasher cut out. When a leak occurs under the dishwasher it will eventually be escorted out on the floor in front of the dishwasher instead of remaining underneath the dishwasher and slowly seeping in and ruining floors and swelling cabinets.

If you connect the clean out above the trap then you can run the faucet and flush all the crud away while the drain is being cleaned and also cleans the cable at the same time. Just use a tee with a piece of pipe and adapter and threaded plug so you can get a bucket below to catch spillage from the cable. For crawl spaces run a clean out pipe over to the access area so you don't need to drag the machine in there. People don't think about maintenance. All they think about is building something as cheaply as possible and making the most profit on each job.
@PROSDIY3 жыл бұрын
I agree accessible cleanouts should be mandatory. It doesn't really matter if the cleanout is installed above the p-trap or how it's done in the video though because if the water is coming back up on you it would only make a difference if the cleanout was above flood level rim. Which isn't really practical for kitchen sinks. You can still run the water at the same time as augering with this setup. I carry a 3/4" aerator adaptor x 3/4" male hose connection and short garden hose in my van for when there's no cleanout and I have to auger through the disconnected p-trap. Then I can still run water from the kitchen faucet, through the hose, and into the drain.
