Here we Brazil, code does not dictate the minimum size for traps, and the standard trap size for a shower is 1.1/2". In my experience, that works well for a water flow rate up to 12 liters per minute (which would be equivalent to 3.2 gallons per minute). However, shower heads with a higher water flow rate may flood the floor when using a 1.1/2" trap. Is 12 liters per minute enough for taking a shower? In my opinion, yes. But some people may be annoyed by the floor flooding if you use a high water flow shower head with a 1.1/2" trap (as I've experienced in some hotels). So what I would suggest is: do not install a high water flow shower head if you have a 1.1/2" trap. And if you do not want to waste water, do not install them even with a 2" trap. More thant 12 liters per minute is unnecessary for taking a shower. But, if possible, use a 2" trap, because they are much easier to unclog if necessary. That's my 2 cent contribution.

@@DIYJIM I'm planning on building a tiny home on a slab, but don't wish to put plumbing below. Your video gives a great idea on how to plumb from an elevated shower base. A regular toilet with a 'closet bend' could also fit under a 2x6 base if I raised the entire bathroom. Then the 3" PVC could go out the side-wall and down underground, thus bypassing any under-slab plumbing. This would allow 'gravity-feed' to drain away without the need of an electric grinder/pump.

I read online today, supposedly from a knowledgeable plumber, that 'Code' calls for a 2" p-trap, BUT will permit a 1.5" p-trap if construction environment (slab space) precludes it. So, then it IS acceptable somewhere in the US, but as they say, it all depends upon the 'governing body' to permit it. And, if it's YOUR property, YOU'RE the governing body. All 'Code' is at that point, is 'good advice'. I mean, we all like good advice. But why should PHYSICS be different in one locality compared to another? If 1.5" is permitted over a basement slab SOMEWHERE in the US, it should be permitted in ALL areas. Unless, of course, there is an overwhelming compelling reason as to why it shouldn't. Let's hear it. 👍

Do you think the shower draining like that is due to the 1-1/2" trap and/or not being vented? I wonder if that's the issue more so than the height difference, almost like the pump would keep up a little better if the water was getting to it faster, but it drains just slow enough that it's almost backing up before the pump clears the line. Not sure...I guess it could just be the height difference isn't enough and could benefit from 1 more inch (as you mentioned). Would be an interesting test (but certainly not an easy one!) to see if a 2" trap or venting the shower line makes a difference. Now that this is 8 months+ old, any update on how it's working as-is when actually taking a shower with soap, etc.?

Plumber here- Do NOT silicone the exposed seams on that shower. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and do it and then send me a picture in about 2-3 years and tell me how it looks.. Believe me, cleaning the seams occasionally with a toothbrush or other method is much easier than replacing the very unslighty old silicone. Good luck.
