I watched about seven or eight videos on the same subject and they were so poorly done that I had to turn them off prematurely. Then I watched this instructional video. What a difference! Truly excellent. Professionally done. Clear explanations. Showed all of the options and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each option. Also pointed out the importance of the right cable for each option. That's the trouble with KZbin, one will obtain a super high quality instructional videos such as this one followed by six or seven really bad ones. Thank you for a professionally done, most excellent instructional video on how to connect up a smart TV to an AVR.

Thanks so much for very clear instructions. I purchased a Sony Bravia tv and was attempting to hook up a dvr and avr with what I now know were obsolete hdmi cables. Having wasted hours trying a host of different connections and either getting audio, no video or the other way around I was seriously thinking of chucking the avr out! Your explanation of the optical cord option solved my issue in 2 minutes (after finding the correct input settings on the Pioneer avr). I was contemplating shelling out a few hundred for a sound bar. Great video! I have struggled for years to connect my old (vintage) HK AVR to our Samsung "SmartTV." So, now I can actually hear FM radio (I made a simple antenna that works!), connect to my DVD, use AirPlay (with RocketFish adapter) to connect iPhone/iPad to receiver and watch on TV. I did not watch the entire video, so I don't know if you covered how to set-up so that the AirPlay sound comes out my speakers, rather than the TV speakers.

Thank you for this helpful video! I was like 5 steps from wits end trying to connect my LGTV to my Receiver using ARC. Didn't realize that the TV has a specific ARC port. I thought all of them were the same. One quick change and setup later and now I can control my receiver with my Magic Remote. Appreciate the tutorial!

Me too. I have a new LG C1 and I can't make it work on ARC for my Sony receiver's speakers to work. Brand new cord. What was the solution Jeff? Did you buy a specific "ARC" cord? I'm using a new high speed cord. This TV has no white/red connections.
@Blackdog48183 жыл бұрын
In a Sony DH-950 receiver, there's standard setting, which is where my old Sony Bravia was set to automatically, and then "enhanced" which is the 4k mode. You must switch it, or you won't get sound on the new TV's with an ARC connection.
@JeffJSays3 жыл бұрын
@@Blackdog4818 Hey! I used a regular HDMI cord and connected it to the ARC ports on the receiver and the HDMI. Then ran the sound setup on the LG. On my Yamaha, I set the ARC audio to "Audio 1". That solved a lot of problems. It will disconnect from time to time but if I switch back to audio 1, Im straight
@Blackdog48183 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's probably the 4k mode. You might want to read the instructions like I should have. You can usually find them online with a search. I found my Sony DH-590 full manual, and found that there were 2 settings, and only one works with 4k. Could be the same way with the Yamaha Amp as well.
@Blackdog48183 жыл бұрын
And then if you figure out the right ARC connection, you have to make sure you're not on surround sound, or you'll get the music and background audio but no dialog. I had to switch my 2 stand speakers (not a sound bar) to "2 channel" vs. "5.1 surround". If I accidentally touch surround sound on my receiver, it cuts out the dialog. LOL.

Old but gold 👍 I wish you have explained that you loose surround sound with toslink. Most TVs also today only provide PCM2.0 signal (stereo) and then it is up to the AVR reciever to transcode the signal over to surround. Some TVs do provide pass thru, but not many. This is why it is best to use HDMI with ARC. Please also be aware that not all apps installed on smart TVs output surround. So check that too, if you have issues 🙂

@antoniocuautle77424 жыл бұрын
when you say watching direct, do you mean DirecTV? the reason for the question is, if you are using an external source from a service provider, probably the sound is connected directly to the AVR, and that's why you get sound from it. but when you change to an internal TV app, say, KZbin, Pandora, or Netflix, these are internal functions of the TV, but your tv is connected as an output, not as a source, that's why you don't get sound from those apps. So, what do we do? check the back of the tv and see if you see the word ARC next to any of the HDMI inputs, normally only one of them is ARC, and not necessarily is HDMI1, on my LGtv is HDMI2. next, check if the "HDMI out" of your AVR is marked with "ARC" , if both of them are marked ARC, it means that you should connect those two together and watch everything through that particular input on your TV (you'll also have to make sure that you go to the TV settings and choose ARC or Digital out from the tv) If only one, or none of your your devices have ARC, the next thing to check for is, if the tv has a "optical output" if so, connect yout tv to the AVR, with and optical cable in addition to the HDMI, then, whenever you want to watch youtube videos with your stereo system all you do is change the input on your AVR to match where you connected the optical cord. this cords are cheaper on amazon, than at your local Best Buy.

If your receiver supports USB it might support a USB Bluetooth dongle. Search KZbin videos for this and go wireless. Otherwise get the 1/8 inch stereo to RCA and plug the RCA's to audio inputs on the receiver. That will give you stereo sound. On the receiver set it to stereo instead of surround sound and set it to the same audio inputs that you plugged into.

RCA (Red / White colors) are analog thus only capable of carrying a 2 channel, left right stereo, signal whereas a digital cable such as Toslink optical, HDMI, Digital Coaxial Audio, all can carry more than 2.0 stereo; they carry 5.1 and better to your surround receiver which then processes the in coming signal and sends it to the respective speaker. The .1 is a subwoofer signal.

If I plug the Apple TV directly into the “HDMI 2” slot on my television, it obviously isn’t connected the stereo system and also uses a different input. Would the Apple TV show picture and sound (work properly) if I plugged it into the back of my stereo system via one of the other HDMI slots on there, and then use the “HDMI OUT” to plug the stereo into my television, then use the front screen on my system to select the proper HDMI port where the Apple TV is? The Apple TV only has ports for Ethernet and HDMI.

So I have a Vizio V-Series TV, a vizio soundbar and a Onkyo AVR Receiver. Out of the soundbar and the receiver, which should be plugged into the TV HDMI ARC? I currently have my soundbar plugged in the ARC and the receiver in HDMI 2 but I can't get the soundbar and my front speakers to play at the same time. Its one or the other.

I tried connecting a vcr to a receiver then a tv. My receiver has a hdmi output which I connected to the tv and the vcr was connected to the receiver inputs yellow video and red/white sound. I could only hear the sound and no video ??? I’m assuming the yellow video will not be converted by the receiver to an hdmi signal and so it won’t work ?

I have a 4k tv and yamaha amp, Do I need to connect my 4k dvd player to tv as well to AVR to watch in 4k. Or will the tv pick up the 4k dvd if I only connect the dvd player to amp.

Either connect to port on tv and switch to that input with tv remote. Audio will play back to AVR through ARC connection. Or (I prefer) connect DVR to second input on AVR and switch AVR input. It will depend on capability of your AVR, e.g. can AVR process HDR signal. See if AVR has an enhanced ARC option in the option menus. If not use tv’s second input.

I have a Sony Receiver(STR DE-315) from the late 90's with no HDMI. I'd still like to hook up my surround sound with it & my new Samsung TU700D TV. Is there any way that this is possible?

Thank you for your explanation. My issue is how to setup my Onkyo SR-605 AVR in order to manage eARC audio from my Sony A80J TV.

So if I have a 2009 Sony Home Theater DVD player, I would use and HDMI cable for video and then a Toslink for audio, correct? I just bought a 2018 Samsung Smart TV NU6900. It ONLY has HDMI and Toslink, no old RCA jacks like the Sony surround. The Sony surround does have an HDMI jack (NOT ARC like on the TV though) and a Toslink. Can you advise?

Hello, I have an onkyo ht r330. It doesn't have any hdmi. Although I've bought a toslink cable and connected it to the TV. (Even changing the setting on the TV to optical) but no sounds come out. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
