So you just picked up the DJI Osmo Action 3 and you want to connect an external mic to it. Maybe you're a vlogger who needs multiple audio options or maybe you're just a Content Creator who appreciates great audio recorded in camera.

Ha! Sometimes I think these setups are more for audio recordists who want to throw a camera on their rig rather than video people who want higher quality audio lol! I've done field recordings with similar setups and people don't even notice a camera. They only see the giant deadcat or windmuffs!

@@WayneRECs I can see that, the deadcats on the XLR shotguns are massive and really stick out. Most of the time I I am out recording B-Roll and know I won't use any audio I don't even add a mic. If I am out just grabbing audio I don't worry about a camera at all, I just toss the recorder in my audio bag and try to not be so noticeable, which is difficult when you are a giant white dude in southeast Asia, but I do my best to blend in and go unnoticed most of the time. LOL

Question and sincere compliments... Great video, wonderful channel, thanks for genuine content and simple reverence for audio. Question: The Rode VideoMic NTG is in the the thumbnail for this video yet not mentioned/tested. I am very keen to know if the NTG via USB-C to USB-C connection works with the Action 3 (with Rode cables or maybe even just a USB-C data cable). Rode seem to use proprietary pin-outs for usb-c, so not sure...

So the Action 3 and VideoMic NTG have a few things going on... To briefly answer your question, yes, the NTG will output a digital signal via a standard USB-C to USB-C data cable. Mine also auto powers on and off with the camera when connected this way. However, when connected via USB-C the NTG's gain knob only adjusts the 3.5mm headphone out for monitoring levels. If you want to maintain the functionality of the gain knob, you can output via the NTG's included 3.5mm cable into an adapter like the BY-K4. However, in my testing this method produces a slight buzz in the audio. This is present both with the factory included 3.5mm TRRS smart cable and the BY-K4 adapter and also when using just a BY-K2 adapter. So IMO, the USB-C is a cleaner signal and sounds better when the Action 3's level is boosted than using the 3.5mm output and raising the gain knob on the NTG.

Thanks but is there a adaptor that can charge and support mic at the same time? I tried a few that work on my phone but only somewhat works on the action 3. Only charging or mic works they don't work at the same time! If I'm recording with ext mic and I plug the power then automatically disconnected the ext mic. Very strange behaviour! Any suggestions plz? Thanks

Thanks for your comment! As I don't have a multi port USB-C adapter to test personally, I think it has something to do with the OA3's USB-C port isn't multifunctional though I'm not sure how it decides what to do when a USB cable is plugged in. For example, I have a right angle USB-C adapter. I've tested 3 different USB mics (all which work without the adapter) and only 1 works with the adapter. Sobay first glance, it seems like it wouldn't be possible to charge & use an external mic.

Nope not possible charging takes precedent, tried it with several USB c splitters. Appears the camera os is a older version of Android pre power delivery USB protocol. Same splitters and mics work perfectly together on newer phones that support PD.

For a while my go to MIC was the DJI wireless MIC but recently I notice "white noise" intermittently and at times unnoticeable. I thought it was user error or maybe my GoPro10, so I pulled my RODE wireless ME out of timeout and could not duplicate the problem. The RODE wireless ME performed flawlessly! at the same time I had forgotten why I stopped using it in the first place. I just ordered the Action 3 adventure combo and the DJI Mic package, I think this might be the best setup since the DJI receiver connects to the Osmo with a tiny connector, no cable. Like you said, adding connectors introduces points of failure, I'm going to give the DJI+DJI combo a shot, another motorcycle POV KZbinr did and it was a perfect match.

Hi Ben, thanks for your comment! Yes, the Action 3 should be able to accept any standard USB-C mic including lavs. The only caveat are USB-C mics that are specifically designed for (action) cameras with proprietary USB-C audio inputs. For example, a USB-C lav mic that is specifically listed for Insta360 OneX2 compatibility will not work on the Action 3. The same holds true for mics/adapters specific for GoPros, Action 1, etc).

Great video I am looking at getting an action 3. But so far from what I can see the level monitoring on screen looks pretty bad. When you set the gain reduction are you able to see a level meter to know your not going to clip??

Thanks for your comment! The Action 3's "meter" is pretty lacking IMO. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they have some kind of indictor, but there's no accuracy to it. Basically, when an external mic is connected to the camera, the MIC icon will appear and the audio settings will switch to enable the Camera's Gain adjustment. While the icon does flash white displaying a signal (and red when clipping), it only does so from the main screen, meaning after you set the gain, you need to exit the Gain Screen, then exit the Settings screen and then you can see the mic indicator.

Very nice versatility. I like my new DJI wireless mics also. They have internal recording that’s easy to extract and with the audio from the camera to sync in post. Thanks for your comment as always! I think DJI deserves some extra credit for not crippling the functionality of the Action 3's (& I think Action 2?) USB-C port. For a company that doesn't necessarily specialize in audio products, the way it's implemented in the Action 3 should be an option other camera manufacturers should make note of. I for one appreciate not having to spend $50-$80 on a proprietary accessory to be able to use an external mic. But maybe it's just me lol!

Hi Wayne, this video helped me out so much thank you for this video! I have a quick question. So if I set Zoom H6 as 24 bit 96kHz WAV and connect it via USB as an audio interface mode to Dji Action, which I believe records in 16 bit 48kHz AAC, would the audio on the footage be recorded in 24 bit 96kHz or would it be converted into 16bit 48kHz as the video is being recorded? I’m a musician who was interested in getting an action cam and was looking into Ace Pro 2; until I watched your videos. Ordered my Action 5 Pro last night. Thank you for such informative videos. If you could answer my question whenever you get a chance, I’d be appreciated!

The bit depth and sample rates will always be limited to what the device is capable of. So the DJI Action cameras will record the audio as 16-bit 48Khz regardless if a higher bit depth is sent to them. However, you should be able to simultaneously record on the H6 while sending a digital signal to the Action 5 via USB which would give you a separate 24-bit 96kHz wav file on the H6.

Hey Daryl! Thanks for your comment! There are actually 2 different mics that I use outside my studio with the Action 3. For front facing vlogging, I've been using the Comica VM-10 PRO via the mics Digital output through a USB-C to USB-C cable directly into the Action 3. The VM-10 PRO is a great compact on camera mic that has it's own physical gain adjustment knob. Alternatively, I also like using the MOVO DoubleMic UC. This is a USB-C mic with both a front and rear facing capsule. As this mic was designed to be plugged directly into a smartphone, I end up using a MOVO shockmount and USB-C extension cable to connect it to the Action 3. You can see both of these mic setups in some of my other DJI Osmo Action 3 videos. I personally believe that you generally get cleaner audio using a USB-C mic rather than a 3.5mm TRS mic going into an adapter like the BY-K4. Hope this helps!

Thanks for asking! The DB Gain setting is only available when you have a compatible USB-C mic or mic adapter connected to the Action 3. When you do, on the main screen, you'll see the "Mic" icon next to the battery level. Tap on the Settings Icon on the center right of the screen. Tap the "PRO" icon in the upper right corner to enable PRO mode. Then tap on the Mic icon to access the "Channel" and "Gain" settings.

Hi, thanks for your comment! It's my understanding that the older DJI 3.5mm adapters were specifically designed for the Osmo Pockets and Osmo Action 1 as they needed proprietary USB-C to 3.5mm audio adapters to accept at TRS mic. The Action 3's USB-C port seems different in that it will natively accept a USB-C mic and as a result, generic USB-C 3.5mm mic adapters (like the BOYA ones in this video) work while the DJI branded ones do not. Super confusing that 1st party accessories are like this but ultimately, this makes the Action 3 way more versatile audio wise. I suspect adapters like the Movo UCMA-1 which is specifically labeled as a "mic adapter" would work. However, be advised that cheaper adapters that have a USB-C end and a 3.5mm end may be designed for HEADPHONE output instead of MIC input and most likely will not work with a microphone. Hope this helps!

super informative video mate, loved it! Previously i had successful stunt with go pro 9 with go pro chunky mic adapter and direct using SONY ECM-LV1 mic, audio is flawless. That mic audio jack is TRS, and not TRRS. . . Now when i bought DJI Action 3, i thought to buy adapter, its CYNOVA Osmo Action Dual 3.5mm/USB-C Mic. Now when i am using My previous Sony mic ECM-LV1, there is no audio capturing, no mic sign in display and neither recording anything. . . Now i am not sure what the issue, is the issue with cynova mic adapter or something else.

Thanks for your comment! My understanding is that the Cynova adapter was designed specifically for the Action 1 (as that camera did not have USB-C mic capabilities). So much like the GpPro mic adapter or MediaMod, the Cynova adapters are device specific. Now, the Action 3 accepts generic USB-C Mic adapters (like the ones from BOYA or MOVO). I don't think DJI made this clear (as most likely they weren't going to name/recommend another company. I don't think this was an issue with the Action 2 as the modular design didn't suggest the original Action 1 Cynova adapter was compatible. But because the 3 went back to the original form factor, it would make sense the accessories would be compatible. It's kinda a bummer right now during the transition, but I believe in the long run, the way the Action 3 handles external mics will become more prevalent with other manufacturers.

Thanks for your comment! That's a tough one! While the MKE200 has a lot of great things going for it, the internal shockmount is not one of them... I think the trade off for a small, compact form factor is that the mic is more susceptible to handling noise. There are a few things you could consider: The selfie stick or tripod handle that you use to hold your rig can impact the handling noise to some extent. For example if you're using a Manfrotto PIXI that has a hard plastic handle, that would transmit more noise than say a segmented selfie stick with a thick foam covered handle. I also have something like the Movo SMM8 that I'll mount both the camera and mic on (if I'm using an action cam). This isolates the entire setup from some handling noise though negates the benefit of having a minimalist set up. Lastly, practice physically minimizing handling noise and/or be more conscious of when and how you're changing hands or holding your rig. Sounds lame, but sometimes even wearing gloves can help to not transfer noise (though you may be more likely to drop your whole rig lol!) Hope this helps!

@@WayneRECs Yes, Wayne, the Action 2 was the first of their cameras for that, the others needed a bespoke USB interface that used bespoke USB protocols. And yes, showing people very useful audio or video workflows doesn't get you as many views as bitching about the stuff. As you may have noticed a couple of months back on my Uncut channel, I done a complete clickbait thing about the A3 and before that I completely slagged off the A2. Both of those videos got way more views than my helpful workflow ones. It just shows you that the harsh reality is that most people are more interested in negative stuff compared to positive stuff. Thanks for your comment! I hear you on waiting for Action 3 accessories! Typically for action cam setups, I use a Ulanzi U-60 Dual Cold Shoe Ball Head, like I did in this video. I've always found action camera cages to have inconvenient cold shoe placements for mics (especially when they have a dead cat on them). Instead, I've resorted to using the ball head with the camera on top and the side cold shoe on the opposite side of the lens. The lower and farther distance help in keeping the mic out of a vlogging shot and also gives the ability of tilting the mic up/down.

Great video! The only inconvenience I see here is that it won't allow simultaneous charging and plugged external microphone at the same time, simple 3.5mm jack input on extension battery module with converter inside would be much better. Not a fan of wireless microphones or various cable adapters.

Hello, I bought the boya usb-c mic adapter you recommended, but my action 3 simply is not picking up that I have anything plugged in. I'm sure I have the right TRS adapters etc. And have tried combinations of things, but the camera isn't picking it up. Any ideas of what this might be? Has anyone had this issue? I bought the action 3 because I was sick of audio issues with my gopro and now the mic won't even pick up on this haha.

There are so many people saying TRS and TTRS I bought both I also have trs and TTRS cables and adaptors and the osmo 3 did not see anything but when I connected an old cheap usb mic it worked right away have DJI changed something?

Thanks for your comment! The DJI Action 3 handles usb audio like a PC would, but to input an external mic, a USB-C to 3.5mm Microphone adapter (not a headphone adapter) is needed. Thanks for your comment! I only have a RODE Wireless GO I, so no usb-c output. But the Wireless GO II should work via usb-c though I can't personally confirm on mono or stereo (although I surmise if the rx is set to split and the Action 3 is set to Stereo it should work)

That being said, I've heard a lot of demand to change and connect an external mic simultaneously, so potentially DJI or a 3rd party will release an adapter specifically designed to do so! Saw both of your informative videos in this regard. I would just appreciate if you could answer a simple question. If we use USB C to TRS, followed by TRS To TRSS, and then a TRSS mic, it works, as it should. But does it also work, if I plug in a USB C to 3.5mm TRSS, followed directly by a TRSS lav mic? Lot of people have recommended the By-K4 but I am not able to understand why first I need to go from USB C to TRS, then again from TRS to TRSS, and then from TRSS finally joined to the lav mic itself when we could just get a normal cheap USB C to TRSS adapter and plug in a TRSS mic into it? Thanks for your question! So here are some details that I may have omitted from my videos that may shed some light on TRS vs TRRS. TLDR: USB-C to TRRS & USB-C to TRS adapters are functionally different. Having the same type of connection doesn't always mean the two devices are compatible. Oh, and it's ok to be confused, because they way everything works is super convoluted.... TRRS jacks that were first introduced in mobile phones are functionally different than most TRRS adapters. Phones have internal circuitry to convert digital audio to an analog signal (for music playback for example) AND circuitry to convert an analog signal to a digital one (i.e. a mic in a headset that is used for calls. USB-C to 3.5mm adapters basically only have 1 of these functions. So when phones ditched 3.5mm TRRS jacks for only USB-C ports, my understanding is that phones then only contained circuitry to convert a digital audio signal to an analog one. This means when you play an mp3 on your phone, the phone changes the digital information to electrical analog signals. As such, the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter for headphones doesn't need any additional circuitry built into it (which is why these adapters are so much cheaper). So in a TRRS connection, the Tip transmits the Left audio out, the Ring transmits the Right and then the 2nd Ring and Sleeve are for the Ground and Mic (which sometimes are reversed only to complicate things more lol). This is all why the mic in a headset sounds like what you would expect a phone call to sound like (as a TRRS generally only sends a limited audio signal back). So that said, this is why USB-C to 3.5mm Microphone Adapters are 1) more expensive and 2) larger in size, because they have the additional circuitry to convert an analog signal to a digital one (within the adapter) and then sends only a digital signal to the USB device (in this case the Action 3). These adapters are typically only TRS as TRS is the standard microphone output. Now when it comes to lav mics that have TRRS connectors, they came about when audio companies wanted to make mics specifically for mobile phones. As phones had TRRS jacks, mics needed to match that to make the correct physical connections within the actual jack (a TRRS jack as 4 points of contact with a TRRS male plug whereas a TRS has 3 points of contact with a TRS male plug). So a TRRS mic is wired physically to make the physical connections in a phone to transmit the entire audio signal. This is why you need a TRRS female to TRS male adapter which physically changes the wiring to allow a TRRS mic to make the correct TRS connections. This is also why sometimes male TRS plugs work in TRRS jacks (because the TRS ring actually touches both the TRRS 2 rings) and why male TRRS plugs don't always work in TRS jacks (because one of the rings of the TRRS plug doesn't touch anything to make a physical connection.) Now to further complicate things, audio companies now have Smart Sensing TRRS outputs. These only have a male TRRS plug but the audio device/mic can detect how many physical connects are made when you plug that TRRS into a jack and subsequently sends the appropriate signal. This allows some newer mics to be plugged into a camera's 3.5mm input (TRS jack) or a mobile phones 3.5mm input (TRRS jack). BUT, a USB-C to 3.5mm TRRS headphone adapter is not able to receive an audio signal even though all the TRRS connections are the same. BUT these smart sensing mics would work with a USB-C to 3.5mm TRS microphone adapter as the device would configure the output to bridge 2 of the connections. Hopefully, this didn't create more confusion and maybe I should make a video dedicated to explaining TRS vs TRRS in 2023... lol.

I am a photographer film-maker and while I do have the DJI MIC, I feel its bit too much investment sitting attached to my OA with a mere USB C jack specially when I'm on my bike. Even saw a video in which the rider, broke the glass on this DJI receiver which was attached to OA. So did a ton of research into hundreds of videos discussing this topic. Yours was definitely one of the best on the topic. Though, I'm surprised that DJI is just sitting all these years and not filling this gap with a product like the GoPro Adapter. When we're investing so much money into a camera, it should solve problems, not create new ones. I have probably 8-9 different mics at this point and multiple different cables and adapters and I'm still not sure what will work on it when my DJI OA4 finally arrives in 2 days. Thanks for your comment! There shouldn't be any sound difference between the BY-K2 and the BY-K4, however, if TRS cable you use with the K4 is damaged, that could be a factor. With regards to the RODE Wireless GO II, the K2 would be fine although the WGII can output digitally via a USB-C to USB-C cable which might be a better option with the Action 3.

Maybe you can help me. I have the Action 3 and I want to use a usbc or 3.5 microphone and place it inside my motorcycle motocross helmet. I have done this with other cameras and the wind noise is blocked out and I can narrate the race I am competing in and get decent audio. With the Action 3 the camera is so sensitive to the sound of motorcycle engines the audio is unusable even with just the sound of my KTM350 engine alone with the db set to zero. Do you know of a way or know of a small microphone that can lower the db to maybe -10 to -20 to lower the sensitivity. Foam and dead cats have not worked. I'm looking at the MOVO LM1X as a possible solution. I wish the cable was not so long.

Hey thanks for your comment! I hear you! Another Moto Creator experiences the same issue. Seems like you've tried all the physical solutions (i.e. additional wind protection and mic placement) and unfortunately, the best solution would be like you said, to have a mic with a pad to attenuate -10 or -20db. The LM1X could be a solution but it's hard to say without actually trying it. In an ideal world, @DJI would hear people talk about this and add the ability to set the gain below 0db in a firmware update. (But I'm sure they're attention is on other DJI product related issues... lol) An expensive solution could be to run your lav mic into an external recorder that has a more fine tune output level adjustment to then send to the Action 3. A more expensive solution would be to invest in a 32-bit float recorder (like the Zoom F2 or InstaMic). A personalized temporary solution for you specifically, would be to run 2 cameras and use the video from the Action 3 and the audio from your old set up. I saw on your channel that you had a rear camera (which is super cool) and you could plug your lav into that one and then sync the audio in post along with the 2nd camera angle. Hope this helps and fingers crossed for a firmware update!

The limiter is only for the F3's output via it's 3.5mm output jack. When in USB audio interface mode, you can actually set the F3 to 32-bit Float if your program supports it.

Sorry to hear! I haven't had any issues with mine. What mic are you using with it? Where is your mic placement in relation to your sound source? Sometimes, basic level displays like the Action 3 has are not always accurate. Is the mic icon on the screen flashing red and if so, how bad is the audio when you listen back to it? Maybe you can answer this question. When I have an external microphone (Sennheiser XS USB-C) plugged in to my action 3 I'm given an option to adjust the decibel gain, just like in your video. The gain only goes as low as 0 but up to 10. My Sennheiser is very sensitive and being able to move my gain to below zero would really help. Any ideas?

Hey! Thanks for your comment! While I don't personally have a Sennheiser XS USB-C lav, there are a few practical things you can do to attenuate the mic if it's too hot/ sensitive. Depending on how you mic yourself up and how much movement you usually do in your videos, you can try hiding the lav under layers of clothing which could help a little. You would have to be mindful of clothing rustle and fabric rubbing against the mic, but if you encase the element in a "moleskin sandwich" that can also help. Things like windmuffs can also help in a similar way. Otherwise, physically moving the mic placement further away from your sound source (mouth) can have the same effect. I took a look at some of your content and if you have it mounted inside a helmet, experimenting with placement can produce varying results. I used to mic up a helmet of mine with a lav by my chin, but really only picked up breath sounds. I later moved the lav up to my temple area and it helped a great deal! Lastly, we can hope that DJI fine tunes the Gain adjustment in camera with a future firmware update. I surmise that having a -db option wouldn't be that difficult to implement. And lastly, lastly (lol) when looking at future mic purchases, consider a lav with an attenuation or pad feature (typically a switch to set the gain to -6db, -10db, -20db etc). Especially if you have a specific kind of recording scenario that you know you'll need it. Even having this small gain control can be effective in certain situations. Hope this helps!

At slow or no speeds the mic is excellent. When I'm at speeds the noise level is too much for the mic and it all goes to hell. I have used a pair of wired binaural mics and the BOYA BY-K4, I've recorded the line out of my Zoom H6 XY stereo mics using the BY-K2 and I've also been able to use the BOYA DoubleMic UC to record separate left and right channels. Hey, so while I can't confirm directly, here's what I can tell you. I have a Versiontech gaming headset that has a 3.5mm TRRS connection. I was able to successfully record clean audio with the headset mic by plugging the headset TRRS into a RODE SC3 adapter (female TRRS to male TRS) and then into my BOYA BY--K4. So, I suspect that a USB-C male to TRRS female adapter might work as long as the adapter indicates that it can send a mic input signal (as opposed to only receiving a headphone out signal).

This is great. I have a osmo a 3 and a hero 11. I assumed because this does NOT work on the hero 11, that it wouldn't work on the action 3... wrong! It does work on the action 3 but not on hero 11!!!! Any idea why? I have several external mics: rode, zoom, etc and using the boya trs 3.5 to usb-c cable all the mics work in the DJI Osmo Action 3 but none of them work on the go pro hero 11. I emailed go pro support.. they were nice but had no answer.

GoPro's USB-C audio is different than DJI's. DJI accepts generic USB audio. GoPro requires either their proprietary audio (brick) adapter or their MediaMod. These 2 first party a GoPro accessories are the only way to input an external mic (via a 3.5mm TRS). IMO, this is one of the reasons why DJI has the best audio of all cameras currently on the market.

Under normal circumstances, I would do the same and record internally on the F3 and output via TRS to the OA3, but in a quick pinch, connecting the F3 via USB-C to the OA3 only entails a single USB-C cable, only hitting record on the OA3 and no audio sync in post, so just having the ability to do so is pretty neat!

Hey Frank! Apologies for my delayed reply! For space constraints, I'd look at the RODE Lavalier GO (1st gen). They are typically discounted to ~$55 usd online. The Lavalier GO 1 has a small, think mic element which is perfect for fitting into tighter spaces. You could also utilize an accessory called a Hush Lav Quieting Sleeve made by a company called Garfield. They are cylindrical foam sleeves that the Lavalier GO 1 will fit into and are best used in applications where furry wind muffs are not an option. Additionally, you would still need a mic adapter like the BY-04. Hope this helps!

I was hoping I could plug a lavalier with usb-c directly to the camera, but it doesn't work. Too bad as it was one of the reasons I bought it. I used the Osmo Action 1 with the 3rd party mic adapter in my motorcycle helmet and I was happy to get rid of adapters. Now I am not sure what to do.

Which USB-C lav do you have? Have you updated your Action 3 to the latest firmware (released last week)? I know technically it shouldn't matter, but have you tried switching the orientation of that the USB-C lav plugs into the camera's USB-C port? I have a USB-C extension adapter that only works when I plug it in a certain way (even though USB-C is supposed to be non-directional).

So, if the lav is specific to the Insta360 OneX2, then even though it has a USB-C connector, it won't work in any other device as it is specifically designed to output to the OneX2s proprietary USB-C interface. Not all action camera USB-C ports are the same. For example, GoPros have a proprietary feature to unlock audio capabilities. That's why you can only plug in a mic via their MediaMod or GoPro mic adapter. The same with Insta360 and they're adapters by Cynova. Apparently they weren't as strict as GoPro as 3rd parties made specific OneX2 only lavs. DJI did the same thing with the Action 1 that required a DJI specific audio adapter. But now with the Action 2 & 3, the USB-C port is able to recognize USB mics designed for PCs or smartphones. Unfortunately, in your case, I think you're stuck with needed a new lav.

Thanks for your comment! While I don't have these adapters specifically, I believer the MOVO UCMA-1 (for TRS mics) or the MOVO UCMA-2 (for TRRS mics) or the Saramonic SR-C2003 (for TRS mics) all should work. The key is to find an adapter that specifically lists it as a microphone input to USB-C. There are a lot of inexpensive adapters out there that have a USB-C male to 3.5mm female connectors, however the bulk of those are Headphone Output cables, not Microphone Input cables.

I want to put the rode on the O3, AND be able to via bluetooth earbuds hear the live audio. Doable? I am recording tennis matches and I want to be able hear the players call their scores better. Doable?

Well, I haven't seen any indication that BT earbuds can be paired with the Action 3, but if they can, that's something I'd have to explore more. The only way that I can think of right now to monitor the audio live is if you are using a mic that has a direct monitoring feature. For example, if you connect a RODE Videomic NTG, Videomic GO II or Wireless GO II to the Action 3 via a USB-C to USB-C cable, then you can plug in headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the RODE device to monitor the audio being captured by the device (but not the audio level being recorded in camera).
