@WayneRECs3 күн бұрын
If a Mic 2 is connected, the video file will only have audio from the Mic 2. However, you can set Built-in Mic Audio Backup to "on" and the camera will generate a separate wav file of the audio captured with the built-in mics (which you would have to mix in post). Additionally, you can set the Mic 2 to record internally for a separate wav file of the TX. But if you want an mp4 video file with both the Mic 2 audio and Built-in Mic audio mixed together (or separated into a L/R stereo track), then no, the Action 5 PRO can't do that (as of this version of the firmware).

Great video, thanks! I had a terrible recording experience at an exhibition this week with the Action 5 and Mic 2, it seems the combination was adding massive compression somewhere and the background noise was as loud as my voice. I also used my Rode ME in dynamic mode and that was much better. I'll have to use the Rode in future for environments like that. As you say, the controls are limited to overall gain when used with the Mic 2. I"ll have another try and see if reduced gain means less compression. I'll also check if the internal file in the Mic 2 is better than what the camera stored but I doubt it. To give an idea of the background noise, the level meter on the screen was at about 90% before I even started talking but that didn't really reflect the noise in the room compared to my voice (that gain setting being what I would usually use for my voice)

Alright, Wayne. Great video 👍 Although I have been getting into my phones for vlogging, I'm starting to get that itch again for an action camera. Unless GoPro do something drastic, I wont be going anywhere near a Hero ever again. However, I've never had "show stopper" issues with DJI and have had a number of their cameras and have been very happy with them. If there's something crazy during Black Friday, I may be tempted to get the Action 5 Pro. Also, the audio functions on the 5 are way better than anything GoPro have ever done or have. Again, great informative video 👍 I hope you are keeping well buddy. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Wayne, this video helped me out so much thank you for this video! I have a quick question. So if I set Zoom H6 as 24 bit 96kHz WAV and connect it via USB as an audio interface mode to Dji Action, which I believe records in 16 bit 48kHz AAC, would the audio on the footage be recorded in 24 bit 96kHz or would it be converted into 16bit 48kHz as the video is being recorded? I’m a musician who was interested in getting an action cam and was looking into Ace Pro 2; until I watched your videos. Ordered my Action 5 Pro last night. Thank you for such informative videos. If you could answer my question whenever you get a chance, I’d be appreciated!
@WayneRECs6 күн бұрын
The bit depth and sample rates will always be limited to what the device is capable of. So the DJI Action cameras will record the audio as 16-bit 48Khz regardless if a higher bit depth is sent to them. However, you should be able to simultaneously record on the H6 while sending a digital signal to the Action 5 via USB which would give you a separate 24-bit 96kHz wav file on the H6.

Been watching your videos, your sound quality is outstanding. If I may, I would like some advice from you ? I am trying to get an idea how to setup a dual mic for motovlogging with a DJI Action 4, one mic would be inside my helmet for when I need to talk and the other in my backpack or pocket to record the motorcycle's sound (it's a cruiser / custom bike so they sound really nice). I am wondering if you have any recommendations ? I would like for the two audio tracks to be separate so I can mix them differently, is there any way I can do this without upgrading to the DJI action 5 ? Thank you Wayne
@WayneRECs7 күн бұрын
While the Action 5 could do this fairly easily with 2 Mic 2 TX paired to it, for the Action 4, the easiest way would be to get a wireless mic set that comes with 2 transmitters (one for your helmet & one for your backpack). This wireless set would need to be able to Split record (i.e. send transmitter 1 to the L channel & transmitter 2 to the R channel) and the Action 4 would need to be set to Channel Stereo.

@WayneRECs7 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, no. The Action 5 and the Mic 2 TX need to be powered on/off individually. The only power setting available on the camera with regards to the Mic 2 TX units is the "Auto Power Off" which when enabled, the Mic 2 TX will auto power off after a set time of being idle while when the setting is disabled, the TX will never power off until it's done manually or runs out of battery.

This might sound stupid but what is monitor volume in the wireless microphone section?
@WayneRECs7 күн бұрын
When I Mic 2 TX is connected to the Action 5, if you connect a USB-C headphone, you can listen to what the Mic 2 is picking up. The Monitor Volume raises or lowers the volume being sent to these headphones. That said, there is some latency when monitoring the Mic 2 TX this way (i.e. someone will speak into a TX and you'll hear it through the headphones slightly delayed).

@WayneRECs8 күн бұрын
Have you updated the firmware on all of your devices? When I connect a single Mic 2 TX to my Action 5, under the PRO mic settings in the camera, Channel can be toggled between Mono or Stereo but the "TX1/TX2 L/R" is grayed out (and only available with 2 TX connected). Inherently, each Mic 2 is only a Mono signal. Like you said, typically when/if set to Stereo, the camera duplicates that mono signal and writes it to both L/R in a stereo track.

@WayneRECs8 күн бұрын
From a Cold Start, preliminary test show that as soon as the DJI logo fades upon startup, an external mic is almost immediately recognized once the camera displays the image view. I did a quick test with a BOYA adapter, the official DJI Audio Adapter as well as a generic USB-C mic. A warm start requires a few seconds for an external mic to show up. In both of these scenarios, it seems to be recognized much faster than on the Action 4. Cold starting the Action 5 with the Shutter Button also produced similar rapid recognition. I know this was a big issue with the Action 4 with motovloggers and if there is interest, I may do a start up time comparison video.

Hi Wayne. So much information as usual, which I appreciate. So, if you put both mics into mono, are the files stored jointly on the sd card in the OA5. Hard to explain, but I am a motovlogger; if I have mic 1 in my helmet to record voice, and mic 2 in a back pack to record the motorcycle, will the file be synced as one on the camera SD Card, or would I have to sync in editing ?
@gib63838 күн бұрын
I think your question is answered at 4:36 in the video.
@WayneRECs8 күн бұрын
Mic 2 transmitters are in sync with the video when connected to the camera. If you set the channel setting within the camera to Mono, both TX will be combined into a single track (so your helmet TX & backpack TX will be mixed together at whatever gain you set each TX to). If you set the channel to Stereo, one TX is recorded in the L of the stereo track and the other to the R. You can then split them in post and adjust their levels separately. TX back up recordings are only contained to the TX units themselves. Those wav files stored on the TX will be a few frames off of the audio baked into your MP4 video file. In your motovlog scenario, the most flexible configuration would be to have 2 TX with 32-bit float on, Dual Audio Recording on, Built-in Mic Backup on, Channel set to stereo. This will produce: 1. A video MP4 file with the audio from TX1 in the L and TX2 in the R 2. A 16-bit 48kHz wav file on the camera with audio from the camera built-in microphones 3. A 32-bit float wav file on each TX

It's hard to say, but you never know what DJI will roll out in future firmware updates. In the meantime, in lieu of AGC for Mic 2 transmitters, the work around would be to record on the TX in 32-bit float for a back-up to have in the event the audio clips in camera (in the MP4 file).

Hi, great vid so thanks 🙏🏻 a question, do you always recommend using an audio interface together with a shot gun mice instead of plugging it straight in to the camera? What I’m trying to understand is if it will increase the audio quality or not? I just bought a Sennheiser MKE600 with its own phantom power thinking I could then just go straight into the camera. Works… but if I let’s say put the Zoom F3 in between… would audio quality increase? Thanks and I hope you take the time to answer… subscribed!!
@WayneRECs10 күн бұрын
It depends on a few factors. Without know what camera you have, generally speaking, dedicated audio devices produce cleaner recordings than camera mic inputs. If you record directly to an F3, it potentially will sound better than sending directly from the mic to a camera. However, the audible difference may not be noticeable if you are shooting in an environment with high ambient noise. You will always experience audio quality bottlenecks with the weakest component in your audio chain. The cleanest option would be MKE600 directly into an F3 and use then sync that audio file in post with your video file. If you had the MKE600 into the F3 and sent an output via the F3 into your camera, that may sound the same as the MKE600 directly to the camera as the camera's mic input/preamp would be the weak point. At the end of the day, generally recording audio separately should produce the cleanest audio recording. But the audible difference may be negligent depending on your environment and/or they type of content you make and/or how viewers listen to said content. Sometimes adequate audio quality that is simple to implement (i.e. less components and/or cheaper) will be good enough for many use cases as opposed to higher audio quality at the expense of cost and additional potential points of failure.
@roberthammenrudh10 күн бұрын
@ i believe you answered my question so thanks… my camera is a Canon M6 MkII and I will start producing with the MK600 directly out in and take it from there. I understand post process to be the best option, but not there yet and go for the least workload for now! Thanks for your time!!
