How to connect external hard drive to Android tablet

II am confuse with all thes A+, B and etc....how does one know? I do not want to insert a cable into my tablet if it does not have 5v...how does one find out the voltage? In settings?

This might help you if your tablet's got a different port for charging and another port(micro USB port) to connect to a computer. My tablet is an alcatel onetouch t10. At first connecting my 1TB seagate hard disk didn't work as my seagate hard disk needed more power and my connector wasn't a Y cable. Bt after connecting my hard disk's cable to the OTG cable and the OTG cable to my tablet, I plugged in my power adapter and started to charge my tab and voila I could access my hard disk on my tab... Only works that way, if I unplug my wall charger, the external autoejects. Hope it helped

can you make a list of the items used please? also , you said to power the hard drive you need 5v, dont hard drives have to have two difffrent and separate volts to power , 5v and 12v . is this one a 5v one ?

-You need the following: 1. Mobile charger of 5 V which supports USB cable connector as shown. 2. USB male to USB female cable (OR plug 2nd USB connector frm Ext HDD directly to mobi charger) 3. Mini USB male to standard USB female connector if your tablet does not support standard USB as shown. 4. USB connector for external hard drive which has a second USB port for supplementary power. -Standard USB from any PC/laptop has 5 volts so I assume external hard drives operate with just 5 V.

I got a callmax with nil instructions the port with the specification on the back at the box say Dual SIM what a Dual SIM because where the SIM goes it needs 2 I thinking about going by my local phone shop see what and why *2Sims are needed

Use USB extensional cable with secondary power cable. Google "Dell Axim X50v Lil Sync USB Power Adapter Y Cable", something like that.

Get a Y cable with a mini-usb connector, a regular male connector and the connector for the backup hard drive. Hook up the tablet to the supplementary power supply.

Need help, trying to connect wd my passport ultra usb 3.0 portable hd to galaxy tab 2 will these items still work or do I need additional items. My hd doesnt have a second usb slot . Please send me a list of what I need. Also I like your video but it needs to be lighter so we cal actually see the cables and other items that you are connecting. Finally will this process work for connecting external hd to ipad 2 or 3. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

If you mean your Ext HDD cable does not have a supplementary USB slot, then you need to look for the Y shaped USB cable on Ebay or your local electronics store, they might be able to help you with that. I do not whether it would work with iOS on iPads but doing this in no way can damage your equipment so I would advise try it out on iPads and let me know if it works!

It should work on any android tablet which supports USB OTG(over the go) function. I am using a very stock android tablet with 1 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM. Made in China.

When you play a movie off the HDD, does the tablet stream it directly or download it into its internal storage then play? And can I do it with a Mini USB to male type A+a USB female to female adapter instead of the Mini USB to female type A?

You could either play the video directly from the HDD or you could copy the video file onto the SD card and then play it. Yes you could use the USB female to female adapter in between as well if that is what you were asking

Would tis work on newer androic smartphones, like a 8 core 2RAM in my case. I wonder if was to buy the cables so I can supply external power and have adapter from the micro USB where I usually connect the data cable or the charger, but an adaptor going to female USB. If you mean to install games on ext HDD, it is not possible because this device does not allow installation to external storage sources.

Yes it does slow down. Only use if you need to move data in and out of tablet as a secondary storage option.
