How to Connect Nintendo Pro Controller to Steam & Windows - June 2023 Update

Complete guide on how to connect your Nintendo Pro Controller to your Windows 10 PC using Steam as the Driver. Just go to your steam settings are, find the controller tab, and then enable full Nintendo Controller Support. Then plug in your pro controller and you should be good to go. You can also do things like fix Deadzone using Steam for all controllers, and test to see if they are working with a diagnostics panel.

How do we change the brightness of the Blue LED light around the Home Button? We used to be able to change this with a slider and turn it on/off. But I can't find this menu anymore!

My controller just does NOT want to work wireless. I've paired it with bluetooth, but when it connects to steam, it sometimes works for a few seconds and then there's crazy latency and then it just disconnects. And then I can't get it to connect again.

I actually bought the 8bitdo ult bluetooth (has nintendo layout buttons), and here's what: (1) the controller is amazing, confortable, great quality, buttons and joysticks are great. (2) it actually DOES connect to PC via bluetooth and works perfectly. BUT, even though there is this option to use nintendo layout on steam, all games I've tested DO NOT recognize this pattern, and you would have to remap buttons in-game. Even though it is possible, and it will work, buttons are not displayed as in the controller, and might confuse people who play casually (e.g. my wife). So, it's something to think about.

Essentially it just updates the big picture mode UI to use the switch pro buttons. Games will treat A as A, B as B, etc. So if you're used to playing it with an xbox controller, you'll have to get used to the a/b and x/y buttons being switched, or change them in game.

Every time I try to connect it, it doesn't work. It connects to my Switch perfectly fine. I'm not sure if the type of Switch pro controller matters but if so that should be specified. My controller has no plug in next to the sync button - is that a problem?

However, a problem remain for me : i have a switch pro controller that i connected by bluetooth to my pc (i did the exact same setup than you to connect) and even if the controller is connected to the pc, the menu including "game rumble, "steam haptics" and "layout button" doesn't pop and the message "No controllers detected" is still here...

The nintendo controllers dont always like to behave. Sometimes you have to tell your computer to forget the controller and set it up fresh a couple of times before it decides to show up and behave. Ive had that issue several times (including when making this tutorial)

I have to connect mine via usb bc bluetooth wont stay connected to steam for more than like 2 seconds it says "begin setup" and needs me to press buttons but this controller having bluetooth just keeps trying to connect and stuff. it says I can paste a layout thing from clipboard but i dont know what to paste, I've been scouring the internet for like a day trying to find it. any ideas? help lol

I dunno if this helps anyone else but what worked for me is removing my controller from bluetooth, then connecting it again (it was already connected the first time, but any attempts to get it connected again after it was recognized ended up not working, so I removed it as a recognizable bluetooth device and just paired it again afterward)

I can succesfully connect and disconnect switch pro controller when using steam PC. But I can't connect my switch pro controller back to my switch again. I'm pressing the top button to reset, and pressing L and R but it won't pair. why? Is it because you can only pair with 1 device at a time? So cant seamlessly go between switch and PC. Need to connect controller as main controller for either PC or switch first.

I'm using a cable to plug mine into my computer, it used to work just fine but all of a sudden instead of the blue ring showing up it just has the orange light on top glowing like it's charging, and steam says no controllers detected. What should I do?

I wonder if the controller started going to sleep or idle mode. You could try pressing the home button or some of the other menu buttons and see if it wakes up. My PS4 controller does that randomly and Im never really sure why.

The problem a lot of us are having is that, when we turn off the controller, it won't reconnect when we turn it on again. The only way that works so far is to remove the controller from Windows and then set it up again. Bluetooth 4.0 dongles are what some have said work as are 5.4. I don't have either so I can't test that. Do you have any you can test!?

Somtimes you end up having to plug and unplug it and re-set it up a few times. Sometimes it works better paired over bluetooth than it does plugged in. Lot of the third party controllers that arent just some generic Xbox Controller clone work really weird if they work at all.

I'm able to use the controller via Bluetooth and or via the USB cable just fine. The thing I can't fix, is when the lights on the bottom controller, never stop. (The left to right to left flashing). I assume it's still trying to sync? I have no clue how to get that to stop. The 'BetterJoy' app is supposed to be able to monitor battery life, when connected to the pc. Anyone get that to work? Does anyone know of any other app that can check battery status?

My Controller is Doing weird Stuff, i Don't Have a Official Nintendo pro Controller But Steam Detects it as one because the controller is built to work with Switch. It Connects to my PC Bluetooth Perfectly Fine But when checking for Connection's on Steam, Steam Get's Confused and Connects and Disconnect The Controller Every 3 seconds and also cancelling All optimise Window's From steam. This is Prbly a One-Time case but i would really Appreciate if some one Could Help me with the unusual Connection Problem's

If your controller is freaking out when plugged in and disconnecting all the time. its possible your power settings are not prioritizing sending enough power through the plug. If thats the case you can check your power settings. You can also change to using it plugged into your motherboard USB slot instead. You might also see if its an issue of a janky cable.

This tutorial broke one of my screens. Installing this dumb Xbox feature driver has messed one of my screen ports up. Even uninstalling the driver only alleviates the issue but hasn't resolved it... And it didn't even solve my controller issue, as my Switch Pro Controller doesn't even show up when looking for it in the bluetooth list.
