The simplest method to connect two computer systems without using the internet is through an Ethernet cable. Once the connection is established, the two systems can share files between them and also view and edit those files.
In this video, you will learn the step by step method to establish a connection between two computers using an Ethernet cable.

Please note that the settings described should only be used if you are not connected to the internet or any computer you do not fully trust. This is turning off most network security settings. It’s marginally acceptable for two computers sitting side by side which you both own.

Yes, if you do this at home on a notebook computer and then take the computer to coffee shop one could be in for a rude awakening. Same if you take the computer to a class or worksite.

Without a router or switch, I believe that an Ethernet "crossover" cable must be used and not just a standard patch cable.

I believe you. But with just an end to end Ethernet cable, you will still have connection. Just as I have tried it multiple times.

The tx data and rx data are the transmit and receive signal. I havent seen it work with a straight thru cable, as these are different pin numbers on the ethernet cable. Redone writeup after seeing A few utube videos Yes, quite a few video's showing how its done with a straight thru cable, ethernet to ethernet connection. Search on utube and you will find videos, howto.

Recent interfaces automatically switch transmit and receive as needed. They basically negotiate the connection parameters, including transmit/receive, speed, and full/half duplex. By default, both computers will try to ask a router to give them an IP address. If they don’t get a response, they will randomly pick an address from an agreed set of addresses.

Yes, I thought recent equipment switches over the signals, but i wasn't sure.

@@SpeedtechMS I don't see how this is possible, with a normal Ethernet cable, tx and rx are connected together and it needs to be TX to RX , with out this communications are impossible. The only way this could possibly work is if one of the PC's Ethernet port has an auto select function to reverse the connections. I have seen that on switches but not in a PC

Howdy. Nice. Some comments. 1. I believe a cross-over cable is needed. But possibly a patch cable will do since the devices likely have automatic send-receive detection. 2. The network type should be changed to private. 3. Both computers should be configured to have static IP:s within the same subnet mask. Dynamic IP probably won't work as there is no DHCP service in this setup. If it works it probably means the last assigned IP is still valid in the netcard cache. Ah. Just use a flash stick and forget about this fiddling. Regards.

For question 1 Yes that would be true if we were doing this 20 years ago. But thankfully technology is so advanced that it only takes one cable to connect two computers. Two the operating system changes the setting automatically .Three Yes you could go though the hassle of changing the dynamic and static ip's but again the program can handle that as well. why go manual when you can do it auto?

@@gothiccomputerbuilds....5308 Howdy. Aha OK. I guess I am stuck in the past. Ah those were the days. To get a connection working using NetBeui and NetBIOS name resolving. And to get a WINNS sever working. Then to get a basic understanding of TCP/IP and get WINNS over TCP/IP working. And to conquer the top. Get a DNS server working. I would guess many seniors can relate to this. Much Regards.

I love this comment. If you watch the video closely, I did not manually insert or change any IP Address. It was done automatically even without me seeing the IP Address. But connection was established without any delay and files were shared. The same I used in accessing the printer installed on another computer.

Some people said that the best cable to use is Cross Over Ethernet cable. But for me, normal LAN/Ethernet Cable works fine. As long as both ends of the cable are properly clamped, you are good to go.

There are lots of benefits sharing files over the network. You could share a printer, scanner, internet etc. This can be used in the office of different offices where you access your partner's system without leaving your own office space.

Anyway if you follow the previous comments, you will notice that some other people made similar comments. The fact is that things have changed. Technology has evolved. The only thing I did here was to connect my Ethernet cable and I made sure both systems are using the same workgroup name.

@@robert8 With this system you do NOT i repeat do NOT want to let access the internet, those settings open up the pc to ANYONE on the network so once connected exposed to the internet, hence why the direct connection pc to pc. do a search in your case you can do it with lan to lan or lan to wifi the method is almost the same but not the settings and is as simple as in this video, so just do a quick search here on yt - connecting 2 pc over network, good luck.

@@nathanphillips6423 Well, I think the argument here are these words "normal" and *cross over". Whichever works for you, that's fine as long as you achieve the expected result at the end. I have tried this with different Ethernet cables and I had no issues. It worked very well.

Modern Ethernet interfaces automatically detect transmit and receive, so no special cable is needed.
There’s NO WAY this works - Debunking bogus network splitters.
