Nice tips. The points about standing far enough away, using an open stance, hitting the ball when it is high on its arc, not letting your hand drop too far, and hitting straight out, letting gravity and spin do the work - are all excellent. Maybe it is just me, but my chief complaint about your videos (and the main reason I don't watch them more often) is they tend to be repetitive and long. Your 2-minute videos last 10 minutes or more! If you could make your main points in 2-3 minutes, without repeating yourself so much, I would eat them up. I know repetition is helpful for learning, but I can always rewind and replay a section when I want to hear it again; it's more trouble to fast forward to the next key point when I've had enough.

Great video Ryan, many good points - that radius picture made so much sense. Would you also add the following - contact on the high ball the racquet wasn’t 100% horizontal but had an angle pointed up (maybe 30 degrees or so)?

Very useful tips from you Ryan as always! I always struggle with these type of balls and tend to hit deep which usually ends up long. I will definitely remember keeping the distance. One question; I am not very tall (176 cm) and sometimes I find the ball above my head and in the heat of the point I try to attack to finish earlier. In such balls, what is your recommendation? Should I adjust my steps to get a few inches back to let the ball drop or should I jump & hit earlier when the ball is higher?
@kmcclarney2 жыл бұрын
Have you done a video on recognizing a short ball? I'm a 3.0 player with only 2 years experience. My weaknesses is I'd let that ball drop.
@vsanthosh4u2 жыл бұрын
Great video! Sreegan’s dad here. Can we use this technique from baseline too? At young youth level tennis, kids tend to give a lot of topspin and hit the ball high up in the air. So the bounce is also high. Sreegan and I always have discussions around whether to let the ball drop or take it high. Looking forward to your suggestion.

Thanks for the post! If I may ask, what grip is best to achieve this? I play with a semi-western.
@nicolastorres962 жыл бұрын
You can achieve this shot with a semi western without a problem . Just let your arm keep coming up trough the ball on contact
@absolutelynothingtoseehere10 ай бұрын
This is really the easiest scenario. The harder one is when the bounce is below net level and crushing that return requires a humongous amount of topspin.
@j.k.egerton43372 жыл бұрын
What grip is he using? Semi-western or full western? Hard to tell from the video? Helps that he is a pretty tall guy too. Although I've seen Gabriel Schwartzman hit these shots and he's not tall.

What are you supposed to do when you get a short ball that doesn't go that high?
@Alejandro_Piccinini12 жыл бұрын
If you have the time you go low with your knees and try to lift it with topspin, if you barely reach it don't see much more option than trying to finesse it, unless you're Roger and can create a passing shot out of thin air.

I need this in my life. I have a pretty good serve that generates a lot of short pop ups but I struggle putting them away.

Ah the dreaded short high ball. Great tips! One thing that helps me besides keeping the racquet higher and loosing up the wrist, is making sure I explode forward with my body. Now I just need the 10,000 reps to nail it down 😆

How come you don’t mention swinging across the ball? He’s clearly swinging across this high forehand. It’s so much easier to hit high forehands when swinging right to left.
@2MinuteTennis2 жыл бұрын
Good question… because with 25 years of coaching experience I’ve learned that when people attempt “swinging across”, they usually swing down. Not everyone…but most players swing down. So, by simply recommending topspin on this ball (and I do say in the video that’ll it’ll have some side spin), this gets players to swing up and “across” and avoid swinging down. One thing you should know about me is I’m very, very careful with my words. I empathize and think about how my words will be interpreted by my viewers. I can’t control who watches my videos. I have no idea how much tennis my viewers have played. How often they practice. Etc. when you make content the #1 thing to focus on is being helpful. Most people focus on being “right”. But being “right” isn’t always “helpful”. Thanks!!!!

Awesome stuff Ryan - appreciate your thoughtfulness

@@2MinuteTennis I totally see my self swinging down if I start thinking to swing across. I also think I’ll instinctively know that there isn’t any arm length left for me to spend to be able to hit a high ball with a low to high swing anyway.
@shipwreck88472 жыл бұрын
I don't think the problem people have is hitting a sitter that is high bounce. It's the short balls that are almost like bunt slices that draw you in. Those are hard to make an aggressive counter return without leaving a return slice that probably involves the opponent just lobbing you.
