A Swedish cure / prevention is to plant garlic! For example - if you plant garlic next to roses, not only will your roses be bug free, their aroma will also be more intense! A real win-win situation, love from Sweden

No, you don't need any store bought product. Here is a tip from a nursery owner in Baja: Mix a little peroxide with a little dish soap & lots of water & spay the plant. I have done that for the last 2 years & it works like a charm 🙂 Garden lover from LA...

Mrs. P. Mantis also likes to dine on aphids. When I lived in Georgia I always made sure to provide Lady Bug and Mantis facilities. Between the 2 I rarely had a problem. I still got aphids, but these 2 insects ate large for a few days and the nasties were "All gone!" as the little ones will say. Thanks for sharing these great solutions.

Thank you for a great easy-to-follow video! My mom recently tried something just as an experiment - and it worked! She used some of that Fit vegetable wash that's mostly citrus and baking soda ... and the aphids left! Thought I would add that suggestion too!

Thanks for addressing this problem, I don't know a lot about growing but my mom left me her house and she was an avid gardener. I do recognize a few of the bottles, so now I know what to do with it. Our biggest problem here is that it rains buckets in the winter and hardly ever in the summer so it's hard to find stuff that will live through the year. Its It's good to see everyone getting along together. Molly is so adorable!

I ended up taking a pepper plant home from the nursery and the soil was full of aphids! I haven't seen them on the plant yet, but I've seen them twice now in the soil while watering at the base of the plant. The first time I saw them I used neem oil on the plant and I also used some diluted solution in the soil after watering in the morning, but within two weeks I seem them all over again! Going to try what you did and use a different method once a week and hopefully that keeps them away!

For potted individual plants, unburden a heavy infestation by first taking it out in the middle of you lawn or driveway away from other plants, carefully wrap a large black garbage bag at the base of the plant to cover the soil so it doesnt wash the bugs into the soil tip the pot on its side and give the plant a good shower with a garden hose sprayer on the jet setting. After the majority of the aphids are off tip it upright uncover the plastic and spray with insecticidal soap, neem or whatever you choose to use.

I am trying out right now to stick garlic into the soil and also spraying the infected leaves with a mixture of water, milk and a splash of cooking oil (acid in the milk is supposed to kill them and the cooking oil is also poisenous to them). Big advantage of this is that you can use this on herbs/plants that you want to eat afterwards. After one day, it already looks way better, so I hope it will stay like this :)

I've heard good things about parasitic wasps for greenhouses in cold climates. They typically go dormant when the infestation is under control, or feed on populations living in nasturtium or on other plants, then if the aphids come back in the greenhouse, the parasitic wasp population comes back in shortly after, so if you want a more permanent solution than ladybugs, they can work really well. I'm not sure if they work well outside where its cold, but for medium scale commercial tomato greenhouses they work really well.

Watch the ants go back to their best. Once you know where they're coming from, you can kill them at their source. Make a Borax/sugar slurry in a bottle. The ants will take it into the nest and hopefully will kill the queen. No queen, no ants😊. Just don't make it to watery or they won't make it very far.

This video was so helpful!! Thank you for sharing. My parade roses have been besieged by these aphids (I previously didn't know what they were called so I just called them life-suckers, oof), and I took the time to remove them myself, and then spray my plants with the hose. Then after a few weeks, they returned!! And I did the same process again. I'm planning to buy an insecticide, (I was dubious if I should, but my friend convinced me), but I thought I would just go around the store and buy the first one that said it would kill these life-suckers. Thank goodness I watched this video first! I'm going to look for the 'for organic gardening' ones, or maybe even buy the same insecticides if my stores has them! Thank you once again! I feared that these aphids were going to ruin gardening for me. My roses' leaves continued to yellow, and these bugs kept returning. They lost quite a few leaves..in the process. And it was hard seeing the new, light green leaves just crinkled and die. I was really hoping for the roses to grow, and to finally see some rose blooms. I was almost going to give up on roses, because I didn't have the time to remove the aphids and I didn't want to see my roses die. Last year I had already uprooted my marigold because bugs had besieged them, to the point of it not being salvageable, and oh boy, taking it up had hurt me a lot. I actually kept the roses in my house before I let them outside again, so I wouldn't have to deal with the life-suckers returning, but looked sad in there, and I think more leaves were dying (oh no, I messed up, they needed light!!) My living room's not really a lighted area, since my family likes to keep the curtains closed. It's a bit hard, to garden when school's keeping you busy, there's a baby to take care of, and there's schoolwork and other factors in life.. But..once I get some insecticide, everything should be fine. And...having roses and keeping plants brings me joy. I don't want to lose that.

Thanks for the tips. Oddly, Neem Oil wouldn’t work for the aphids on my container vegetable garden (zone 10b), but Insecticidal soap really did the trick in 1 application. I had been spraying Neem oil (with water and dish soap) weekly for months...

Eric you should go to traps. I’ve had the same problem. I’m in the same zone. Gotta kill the ants. Jars with holes in the top, 1tablespoon borax, 3 tablespoons sugar, make a paste with and water and put it under your trees or in your garden. Use some gloves if your afraid to pick off the big ones and put them in a pail of soapy water until you get a grip on them.

Soapy water works every time…. And if it doesnt work the first time fully I add peppermint extract ad well. Never takes more than 3 treatments……. No chemicals needed…. No needing to buy expensive products as well……

I managed an aphid outbreak on my new roses by using a spray bottle filled with water and adding a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid and peppermint oil, it worked fast and well, and was cheap to make.

I get aphids on my hellebores. Also problem with insecticides is that they often will kill the good bugs so if you released lady bugs and used insecticide you would kill your ladybugs. Organocide kills soft-bodied insects like mites but is safe for ones such as lady bugs beetles and bees. :) And yes....I also love Neem oil.

Aly B. Whole milk undiluted. www.green-talk.com/powdery-mildew-spray-with-milk/ There was also a study that said it also controls soft bodied insects like aphids and thrips and mites. I can’t find the original study now but here is a small article on it. The original paper showed that milk controls soft bodied sucking insects by 85%. Whole milk 1 part to water 10 parts. It’s helped black spot on my roses too. Supposedly it changes the PH and makes it inhospitable for molds and fungus. www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Effect-of-cow-milk-on-sucking-pests-and-insect-on-Gupta-Kaur/cdde45e099189ff5162b1af9528c31f9ca73d9aa#paper-header

I like to statt with least harsh method first. My young apple tree has aphids. I spray the leafs with mixture of water and sort of pine sole-soap (5% of the water volume) or 1/2 and 1/2 water and non fat milk. Do it in the evenings for a while and the bugs die (soft bodies break down)

👩‍🌾 Great info. Question Laura: Every year, the Japanese Beetles cover my Mom’s rose bushes eating the leaves and flowers. Not just a few but lots and lots of them. What is good to spray for these? Dawn dish detergent mixed in water helps some - but does not get rid of them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 🌷🦜

I have a potted petunia plant I'm sure is stressed because I just got over a slug problem with it recently. Saw the flying green aphids on the under side of the flowers and took action spraying the plant right way and then afterwards removing all the flowers. Funny thing is the aphids were accompanied by what looked like black fungus gnats as well. Very odd. I'm making it a point now to check all my flowers everyday to catch things early. It's been a hell of a year compared with last year. Don't know why. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A thumbs up from me - Thanks!! I just noticed those pests on one of my newer rose bushes, so will try spraying with water, and then see if I can buy some live lady bugs - I like those creatures!? Also, THANK you for not recommending dish soap and claiming that it's "organic and natural" - Dish soap has chemicals, and even though it's milder than insecticides it's NOT natural or organic.
