How to Control Lawn Fungus
Part-1 of Lawn Journeys strategy to control and prevent lawn fungus. This regimen is a true and tested program used by many DIY enthusiasts. Alternating use of two products, with two different modes of action, is designed to negate fungicide resistance while controlling a broad range of fungi common to turf grass.
There are many comparable products to the ones I'm currently using. Please make your own decision and ONLY apply in accordance with the manufactures instructions and local regulations. You are responsible for what you apply.

@@LawnJourneys yes. I was going to wait till June 1st to put down my first preventive app but already had a couple of fungus diseases going on a good 10 days ago. Ugh. I too purchased prop and azoxy liquid online.

@@brianluby8143 consider giving Hydretain or similar product a shot, I just put mine down (second season). Also bio stims and products that decompact soil, even surfactants. I think some people use baby shampoo, have to look it up. I’m sure you know, let water penetrate and promote deeper root growth. Helps with summer heat and stress.

@@LawnJourneys yea, I try to do longer heavier waterings early in the morning. I don't have irrigation so it's moving around sprinklers. I have thought about trying the hydretain. Last year periodically using pgf helped since it has humic and the humichar seemed to help. So far this year I haven't used that and have basically just been using the yard mastery blends like the 12-12-12 since I was phosphorus deficient.

That little walkway did fill in nicely. Lawn looks great. I used a combination of Disease Ex two weeks ago and Bio Advanced Fungicide today in granular. Had some dollar spot show up two days ago and didn't realize that the Disease Ex didn't treat dollar spot :(

Summer is here. Keep an eye on the fugus and how much water your getting on the lawn (assuming you have no restrictions).

@@LawnJourneys my town does the even/odd restrictions. I only water every 4th day and do a 1/2" so I am not overwatering to attract disease

I get fungus here in south Texas every year. But this it’s bad. Hope my st augastine doesn’t get kill. I’ve hittin disease x and the other stuff in blue bottle. Hope it stops. My yard looks like crap. I’ll buy these 2 products and just hand sprayer next.

If you have active fungus be sure to apply at the curative rat for both products. I did preventative and did have an outbreak of dollar spot in my rear yard. I should have upped to curative but hesitated. Had to spot seed the damage this fall. It’s frustrating I know. Good luck!

I applied Headway G ( contains both Azoxystrobin and Propiconazole ) 6 week's ago, then 3 weeks later I applied Clearly's 3336F. So, I think I'm due for another application. I may try the big box store product's this time, Scott's disease X and Bio Advanced fungus control. I may have waited a little to long, I'm not sure. At first I didn't see any fungus, but I may be starting to notice a little now, so I better get on it. I lost a bunch of my lawn last year to gray leaf spot, and had to reseed. I don't want to reseed 10,000 sq ft each year. Good video. Thanks

John: Appreciate the informative comment. I've heard of Headway G and should probably consider using it at my relatives lawn, which I care for on a monthly basis. I also heard about Clearly's 3336F just this year (a third mode of action). I've also used Disease X and Bio Advanced, both worked great. Amazon runs sales on Disease X so I always keep my eye out. We just had a week of rain here, my lawn was way too tall, cut it this evening. More rain coming tomorrow so glad I got my second round of Azoxy out last weekend. I realize this video is 2 years old but, I'd like to know if you watered in the Azoxy and Humic 12. From what I understand about Azoxy is that it treats both kinds of fungus, foliar and systemic. I've never seen anything on the label that says to water it in after application but, the Humic 12 is supposed to be watered in. If you don't irrigate the Humic 12, it's not going to do anything, or at least that's my understanding.

Great question. I was thinking of doing a new fungus video this season. I use Azoxystrobin (Azoxy) 2SC Fungicide. The manufactuer directions address it as a systemic fungicide that should be watered in with 1/4" of H2O. I generally cut the lawn and apply same day or day after, then irrigate.

Russ, I know azoxy does not prevent or cure dollar spots, however on a situation where dollar spots are already present, can I continue to use azoxy as preventive for other diseases and propiconazole as corrective for dollar spots? Just trying to understand if azoxy would have neutral effect on dollar spots or would actually make it worse. P.S. just a tip on the drill agitator, make sure to turn the power drill only when the tip is completely immersed and use medium speed, otherwise it's going to make lots of undesirable bubbles on the solution !

I think your math is a bit off. You compared Azoxy at full rate to Scotts preventative rate. For 10k sq feet you need 4 bags of that Scotts product

I know I mis spoke around 4 minutes and said "curative" when I was doing the "preventive." 0.38 Azoxystrobinoz per 1000 is approximately 4 oz to treat my entire 10k. Scotts Disease X is (0.31% Azoxystrobin) and directions state that one bag treats 5K, so I would be using 2 bags at the preventive rate. Let me know if this clarifies as I'd like to pin the comment to help anyone else. Thanks.

Did you water in the fungicide app? Or just let it sit on the grass blades

Carey instructions for azoxy is to water it in. I followed up with propiconazole 2-weeks later (I’ll share in a video), that says to let it dry on grass first, then water in. Azoxy is same ingredient as DiseaseX so if easy for you to spread granular that’s fine, but water it in to activate. Always follow the instructions and wear prescribed safety equipment.

how much Azoxy 2SC would I use per 2 gallons of water to target Rust (Puccinia)

Mac: I always recommend you read the application instructions provided with the fungicide and apply at the prescribed rate for the type of vegetation and targeted fungus. I've sourced Azoxy from multiple vendors and although the instructions are usually the same, I read them regardless to be sure I apply correctly. When you order the bottle you can usually read the directions and application instructions to be sure your ordering enough for the area you need to apply to. Thanks again for watching.

Hi Russ! You mentioned in video you are applying the fungicide at the “curative” rate since you currently have no active fungus. Wouldn’t you mean to say “preventative rate” in this case then?

@@LawnJourneys Thanks! Any reason you prefer the liquid Azoxy versus Scott’s DiseasEx granular with same active ingredient? All the box stores carry that as well as Bayer Bioadvanced Propiconazole. Is Yard Mastery products more cost effective?

I wanted to try the liquid azoxy because I’m backpack spraying with biostims at the same time. It’s slightly cheaper too, mentioned in the video. I would still use granular Disease X and the Bioadvanced, same active ingredients and readily available. I like YardMastery but not pushing it. You’re good going with the products you mentioned. In fact I should remember to point them out in my next fungus installment, upcoming. Thanks again for commenting and good luck with your fungus prevention 👍

Humic12 was just part of my monthly bio-stim. Its convenient to apply it all at once, in the backpack, with whatever else I need to get out. With that said, not much mixes well with MicroGreene. Thanks for watching and be well.

I like the video but I don't like paying $120.00 for Azoxy when I can get the exact same formula in Atticus for $62.00. Sorry but we're talking more than just a few bucks here, and in todays economy every bit helps. :)
