The slam on the hand is a confusion mechanism to sneak in the first painless suggestion. the back of the hand has hardly any nerves at all in the surface layers, so hardly any pain as well (try it without suggestion). So any suggestion that the hand is numb will be amplified by the fact you do not feel as much pain as one would expect and thus the pain is even more alleviated. Some people will faint by the sight of needles they will claim differently! Even when there's no pain the will feel it

I know someone who can do that, even helped a friend who was already in a lot of pain. My friends gallbladder, liver and heart are messed up and shes only 30, and it was causing a lot of pain. This person helped her by turning the pain off. I don't know if that is safe but its better than having all that pain.

Hypnotism by it's very nature, cannot be fake. Because if you are effected by it, one might aregue you are faking, or you may only THINK you are affected because you want it to happen. That, as an end to the means, is the power of suggestion; and that's what the point of this all is.

The tooth ache part was just to identify which student was the most suggestible. Then he worked with that person. it's totally real and amazing what the mind can do with hypnosis. My dad was a hypnotist and while we were growing up he used to do a few tricks like making our arms float around -- very elementary stuff, but convincing. Once he hypnotised a neighbor who was exhausted (she volunteered) and gave her "10 hours of sleep" in about 5 minutes, and she felt great afterwards.

No, I think he chose a specific part of the hand that avoided the essential veins. I think it's part hypnosis, and part misdirection. When the students thought they were feeling searing pain in their teeth, it misdirected the attention of their mind. But it's mostly Derren's skill as a hypnotist and psychologist.

Anyone who calls this fake is an idiot. This is just a prime example of how your mind can make things seem real. It's why your skin "crawls" when you see a spider or insect on television, why your arm starts to "hurt" when you see a horrific injury or the like on a documentary... Derren is simply awesome.

agreed -- reading "NLP: The New Technology of Achievement" right now, about 50 pages in only but a lot of what I've seen Derren Brown do is kinda making sense already 8-) Also, yup looks like he got rid of the "doubter" and didn't even ask the remaining 3 if they also wanted to leave -- partly "peer pressure", partly knowing their staying was cuz they "wanted something to happen", so their subsconscious minds gave Derren "permission" in a way. After pinching the back of your hand it's easy to drive a needle through it with relatively no pain in much the same way. Try it, seriously. If it hurts, you can just stop--but it doesn't. You certainly feel it! But it doesn't at all hurt. Perhaps it was part of the exercise to have them do something wasn't amazingly excruciating....

He uses a combination of techniques including but not limited to: Hypnotism, psychology, general magic, mentalism, and NLP. What people don't realize is that he has spent countless hours reading, studying and practicing, he's failed for a long time so that now he knows what works... and what doesn't. if you really want to do this kind of thing, then start grabbing and reading as many books on the subject you can... i bet you won't get through one... and that's why he can do it, and you cant.

Some people are so suggestible that they can be hypnotized by just saying "sleep" Stage hypnotists generally do group tests to see who the most suggestible is in the audience. When he noticed the kid in the middle was really feeling it he chose him because he was very suggestible.

Heres part of Darrens genius, He picks out a guy to be in the middle of 3 other girls, 1 leaves, but he still has a female to his right and left, even if he felt a little pain, the girls surrounding him is insurance that the guy wont wimp out and claim it hurts. I believe words can mask pain, but he covers his tracks with deliberate situations.

None of these ever affect me, and only one of his "predictions" ever came true for me. (and that only because I knew how he was predicting it, so I predicted his prediction.) The same seems to hold true for most aspies like myself. It seems that we are a little less vulnerable to suggestion.

That's the whole fucking point in this trick. Derren tells his mind that he doesnt feel anything. The brain only registrates a portion of the pinch and the needle going trough his skin. This sort of trick can only be done on people who have a bright mind on these sort of things, people who are interested. But it sure does work. Sorry about my writing, english is my second language.

at 2:52 the guy moves his hand. but my tooth kinda did start aching. but i know how you do that because if you think really hard about throwing up or getting sick you can make yourself do it. just like if you think about scary things you can freak yourself out. it's not that hard. all you have to do is use the right voice tone and level and look straight into some1's eyes to trick the brain. there you go, the explanation :)

If everybody could do it, he'd be out of a job. Just think of how he knows what number somebody is thinking just by reading their facial movements. He knows exactly what to looks for, and if he wanted to plant a number he'd know exactly what to say, how to say it and when to say it. You can't simply memorize what he says and expect it to work.

Actually doctors used hypnosis for anesthesia up until the pharmaceutical companies developed ether anyone who would like to know the truth research magnetism and hypnosis it was common for amputations and dental work. Yes I do think for myself. Its a shame that this skill has been reduced to stage shows there was also a documented operation on ABC Catalyst where they film a lady getting a stomach operation in Australia under hypnosis.

Try it on yourself! There are only few nerves on the back of your hand. When the boy says he doesn't feel the pinch, he's lying. But compared to a pinch on other parts of the body (eg your nipples) that really feels like nothing. There are also only a few blood vessels. Thus no blood (the sharper the object, the less blood anyway and a medical needle is very thin and sharp). When he lifts the boys wrist and lets it drop the boy has not enough time to react. The hand drops on the table like dead
