It can be extremely difficult to control slugs and snails in the garden and stop them munching on your plants. There are so many proposed solutions out there, from pellets to pine mulch, the question is; do they actually work? And if not, what does?

I have accepted them as a part of the ecosystem. I collect them in a ventilated pot with some leaves in the daytime - store in shadow - and put them outside in the municipal shrubs at around 22.00. Hedgehog dinnertime. Since those can hardly find any food anymore with the lack of biodiversity, fences everywhere and very poor soil, everybody is happy with this arrangement. I also have a drinkingbowl for the hedgehogs, has to be cleaned everyday.

I chop a clove of garlic and leave overnight in a basin of water or boil and allow to cool. Then sprinkle the pieces around the plant bases and spray the water onto the bottom leaves. Works wonders! Even if it rains the soil retains the scent which slugs and snail hate.

To Shropshire Las Sorry to learn that you had no success with my method. I’m really SO amazed. They used to devour my hostas and about 6 years ago I was advised to bring the garlic to the boil and leave it to cool before spaying the water around the base of each plant. It worked a treat and every leaf since that time has been untouched. I did see a few small slugs on this year’s runner beans as they peaked above the soil so I boiled three cloves of garlic and used the water to spray the entire row with a watering can. This gave the soil and the plants a fair soaking and I also chopped the bulbs into small pieces and scattered them. I inspect the area every night by torchlight and am pleased to see no more livesstock. Presumably your Shropshire slugs are of a different temperament to ours in Sussex. I wish you all the best in your search to be rid of the beasts. Many years ago I successfully used jars of beer sunk into the grown and they died, happy but I kept forgetting to inspect the jars full of rotten slug corpses !!

@@wendystar3727 thanks for your reply Wendy. I was surprised to see that the garlic spray didn’t deter the slugs from my hostas. I used this method years ago on sawfly that devoured the Solomon's Seal plant yearly and it worked wonders, no more stripped leaves by the young grubs. Could be I'll need to make a stronger garlic spray and have another go. Oh! just thought, I am using the Elephant Garlic, these days, which is larger and milder, maybe there's the clue?

one problem with d.e. is that once it gets wet, it becomes less effective, and of course, one has to water the plants, or it rains, so an expensive item is wasted. I use copper tape around pots with their bottoms cut out, and place the pot around the plant. I make sure to make it at least 3" wide. It protects for the life of the plant, and I use them from year to year. another thing i use is hair; slugs don't like to get into it, so they avoid it. I get bags of it from the beauty salon, wash it, and surround plants that I can't use a pot surround with, such as onions, asparagus, rhubarb, etc.

The only problems with diatomaceous earth is that it is expensive and must be replaced after heavy rains. Egg shells DO work, but only if they are ground to about the same size as cornmeal or diatomaceous earth, and they are cheap. And, of course, beer works, but . . . eew! And ducks love to eat them, so if you have ducks to feed, then that's another possibility.

Tried DE for three years....never worked, even pouring it directly on slugs. They just produce more mucus, which washes it off, unless the slug is already severely weakened and dehydrated. Type in slugs and razorblades, here on KZbin, and you'll understand why eggshells do not work.

Nice comparison, I use DE for chicken mites - it contains glass-like diatoms, but rain would wash it away - especially here in the UK! Thank goodness slug-pellets are no longer used (we have hedgehogs too). I think drowning in beer seems the best method of slug control. They're too slimy for chickens but ducks eat them (also the plants!). Lay a plank down & you'll catch lots after rain/watering.

Neither garlic nor lavender work, as slugs and snails will happily chomp through both as young and tender seedlings, before they mature and become indigestible. Yes DE has to be reapplied if rain washes it away. It works on contact. The great thing tho is if you you find a bunch of slugs/snails in a small location you can liberally sprinkle the colony with DE and they will all dry out and die. This is the only thing that has helped me control their population in my garden and it’s safe for plants and kids too.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew Жыл бұрын
@@kensmaman Must be something magical about your DE. I've poured it directly onto slugs, literally coating them in it and they merely produce more mucus, which washes it off in a short time. Different batches, incidently, in case the fault lay with one and over a couple of growing seasons. Same result. Not only that. Unless your soil is arid (not recommended for the vast majority of plants) the DE leeches moisture from beneath the surface, rendering it ineffective in next to no time. When I say ineffective, I mean it isn't fit to kill off any healthy slugs at the best of times and only affects weak, already partially dehydrated one's. To me it's only real value is in the silicate it contains, as a soil conditioner to aid in irrigation and that can be bought more cost effectively.

My late dad used to take a torch (US: flashlight!) and a salt pot/shaker outside at night ... and go hunting. Just a small sprinkling and they shrivel up and die before your very eyes! Diatomaceous earth is also useful for ants and cockroaches, as it lacerates their exoskeleton to pieces.

They make their way back, if they survive other insects, birds, hedgehogs, soles of shoes, the sun or traffic, no kidding. A study, conducted about two decades back, collected loads of slugs and snails from a garden in a bucket. They were identified, (nail varnish on the snail shells and scarring on the slugs) then driven a couple of miles down the road and dumped on a very large roundabout. Two years later over 78% of them had made their way back to the garden they were taken from. We know birds, pigeons in particular, follow magnetic lines. Maybe the slimeys follow ley lines? 😂
@YamiKisara
@YamiKisara 2 жыл бұрын
The only actually natural way to fight slugs is to sprinkle nematodes around your garden beds (you can buy them or make your own once you find an infested slug), leave spaces for hedgehogs, frogs, or snakes around your garden, collect them regularly/let ducks into the garden to pick it clean, or place a fence with a steep reverse top side around your beds (slugs cannot deal with sharp angles, so they won't be able to crawl in). The least damaging unnatural way is to sprinkle Fe3(PO4)2 around your bed (kills the slugs, but is harmless to other animals and humans), use copper tape circuit with a 9 V battery, or use a beer trap. All the mulches (your product included) are only temporal and often expensive. As for chemicals, sprinkling the slugs with salt, or cutting them up with scissors, I don't think anybody nowadays should stoop down to those options.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew Жыл бұрын
You neglected to mention there are many types of nematodes, some virulently harmful to many plants, some to animals, some to fish, some to beneficial microorganisms in the soil, indeed, some actually harmful to humans, as well. It's a subject requiring careful research, as balance has to be struck, but each individual's need will determine the balance they require.

An entire food chain is affected by slug pellets, because other creatures eat slugs, such as other insects, eg ground beetles which are eaten by voles, and mice, they becoming prey to hedgehogs, foxes, or some species of birds and so on up the food chain. Don't take my word for it, as a gardener for the last fifty-four years, do your own research and discover what I'm saying is absolutely 100% true. Clever and expensive PR keeps the myths about both alive. They rely on folk not wanting to break with tradition...ignorant tradition, at that. Wasting your time with copper tape. Copper scourers are the answer. They're like socks. Unravel one and, using a set of shears or tough scissors cut it into 'doughnut' rings to place around the plant's stems, snipping off any leaves that overhang onto the ground. A flat barrier, such as tape, provides a steady, static shock to their foot, which they can easily bear, whereas the doughnut applies a great many shocks at different times to different places on the slug, not just it's foot. I also place the odd beer trap, as well and I have no problems.
