I have a 1970 Sears Super Suburban garden tractor with the original 14 HP cast iron engine. The old mag was weak and the mechanism that opens the points was so worn that the points gap could not be adjusted more than about .014 inches. Should be .020 inches. I decided to buy the electronic mag these guys used ( the Briggs and Stratton part 398811) and I put it in and it started cold with manual rope start. These guys taught me a valuable lesson. And the very experienced small engine mechanic in my town told me there was no way to convert the cast iron engine to electronic ignition without mailing the flywheel back to Briggs to have the magnet reversed (and possibly rejected for some tiny little insignificant crack). Wait til I see him again!

Just rewatched this for the hell of it. After yrs now of watching Taryl's videos I have to say he's the most knowledgeable small engine guy I have ever seen and has more common sense than most aswell. He will MAKE a way for something to work when others would be lost.

I bout one of them electronic ignition modules many years ago to convert my Gilson and Montgomery Words tractors from the 1960's and early 1970's and it didn't work. So I went back to the points and condenser ,,,,,,,,, Now I know why it didn't work . I'm still using all those tractors today and they're still points and condensers in them. Seeing your video now, you got me thinking maybe I Should try it again. Then again,,, It ain't a big deal to to change or clean and adjust the points every few years. Really like your videos, Thanks Taryl. Ya'll enjoy yer Easter.

Mine has that electronic conversion. It ran, but poorly. I reversed the coil. and things are much better now. Also sanded mucho rust off the flywheel magnets, so a gap adjustment would be meaningful. Then found the ground wire were some burned 18ga? wire, and my kill wouldn't work. Replaced them w/16ga. Now< I can turn it off.

Good video. Never realized flipping the coil prevents having to re-magnetize. I had heard about sending your flywheel away. Maybe this is why another kit I saw says nothing about it. Could be aftermarket, and all they do is flip it.

I have this same machine. Instead of supporting Briggs and Stratton, I simply took an $11.⁰⁰ Clonda clone coil for the 420 cc engine. It took two vice grips, one for each side of the coil legs. Then took it to the bench grinder, and ground the legs to fit the bigger flywheel. Seems like I drilled one hole out bigger in said coil to fit the original mounting tabs. Seems as tho the Clone cool was mounted the opposite way to work. The key is to use vice grips to hold the coil lamanats together. I've used the Clonda coils in several engines since. They cost nearly nothing, and can be drilled to fit most engines. Or all the engines I've needed them for.

Taryl, I've got this old Simplicity tiller with the B&S 19D 8hp. Can I get rid of the points and condenser by installing the BS 398811 kit? If so, would I have to reverse installation (flip it) to reverse magnet polarity? Thanks for your help. Alain

Is there a larger spark plug gap for this coil setup? Or should I run with .035?
@thatbiguy19756 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Taryl is right for 99% of tractors but 1% out there doing this conversion having trouble here is my experience. i put the 398811 coil on my old 67 B&S 12 horse, checked it both ways it only sparked in the when installed correctly as indicated on the coil. no matter where i put the timing it would start like it was advanced and run but never run very smoothly. I even elongated the holes to adjust timing more. sent flywheel to briggs they re-polarized and got it back the next day (i'm in MN). now coil installed same correct way, timing back to original - barley touch the key and it's running smooth as a kitten.
@transammike6 жыл бұрын
I am kinda thinkin the same thing with mine. I flipped it around and no change. Weak spark too. Might just send in the flywheel.
@staind2886 жыл бұрын
@@transammike sometimes the magnets can lose their magnetic ability. Sending in to re-energize them or re polarize in this case is the best option for this scenario
