This video helped me modify a crappy Harbor Breeze Armitage Ceiling fan (hugger type). It wasn't so easy to get the nuts off and unscrew the rod, but with a couple screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer, I made it work.

This 1st of 3 videos is the key to modifying a hugger fan housing for rod mounting, the other 2 are basically just mounting videos for a down rod style fan, the second video also shows how to make a plate to hide a oversized ceiling hole.

Not a bad idea, except driving a bolt through conduit that is holding wire has the possibility of rubbing through the wires causing anything from a simple short, to electrifying the fan, to a fire. Will take years to rub through the insulation, so I would design a bit differently.
