How to Convert GLOCK 40 to 9mil | Lone Wolf Conversion Kit | Tactical Rifleman

I’m a Glock guy for several reasons… They are easy to teach new shooters on; my old unit was (still is) using Glocks when I retired; Glocks are accurate. However, the main reason I swear by Glocks is because they are reliable. I’ve seen 1911s and SIG 220s go down because of mud and dust; not good in a war zone.
Fast forward to running a Glock for CCW back here at home… Everyone used to preach 40cal or 45ACP for knock down. I’m all about knock down power, but there are some great 9mm rounds out there. I personally carry Barnes TAC XP 9mm.
So, for this video, I wanted to talk about how to convert your 40cal Glock to 9mm and back again. The Lone Wolf Conversion Barrel works great. What really impressed me was not just the reliability, but the accuracy. This puppy is dead-on balls accurate. I have no POA/POI shift at all. I’m talking about hitting plates at 100 meters with a G-23.

I had issues with mines. I had to get the 9mm recoil spring and swap it when I swap the barrel and haven’t had no malfunctions

This is my exact set up, and it works. I bought 4 Glock 19 mags to add more reliability. I've put about 600 rounds of 9mm through my Glock 23- stock extractor and ejector- not one malfunction.

I ran and carried a gen2 23 for almost decade with the lone wolf conversion barrel and well over a couple thousand rounds. I reloaded so I honestly have no idea how many rounds. 5k? 7k? Idk. I changed nothing but mags. It was more reliable than a few other guns I’ve had.

I converted my gen3 G35 to 9mm and I had failure to eject until I put in a lighter recoil spring. I was running a stainless uncaptured recoil spring rod. FWIW I was shooting 115 grain range ammo. I did switch to 9mm magazines. I have since installed an Apex trigger and ejector and a gen4 ejector horn. It's pretty reliable now so far.

Karl is like the smartphone of the gun world... When we want to do something and make it simple, we often say the old cliché, "there's an app for that." If you want to know something about firearms, and get a simple, practical, and no non-sense answer chances are that Karl's made a video for that and you will walk away learning something that you didn't know before. In many cases, I've learned things that I didn't know that I didn't know. No joke, I've been wanting to convert an old Gen 3 G22 to 9mm (and make it the "G17" I should've bought back then) for the exact reasons Karl had mentioned, plus a few more. I thought I'd look up reviews for these Lone Wolf barrels before committing any money to this "project." Like Karl pointed out, I too was skeptical that this would be quick and easy fix. Third video in the search (should've been first) I see a Tactical Rifleman review and knew my question would be answered. Karl, I can't thank you enough, you literally answered every question that I had. I'm sold and want to add an additional thank you to the helpful commenters who recommend buying the 9mm recoil spring, will do.

I did this with my Glock 27. A Lone Wolf 9MM barrel turned to precisely fit the larger G27 Slide barrel opening functions 100%, is more accurate than with the factory G27 40 S&W cal.... and than my Gun 3 G19. The G27 mags work fine, although I picked up some G26 Mags on sale, as do G19 mags and G17 mags. I can now shoot my reloads, lead and jacketed if desired with the same 100% function I had before. In fact, I used my G27 with the Lone Wolf 9MM conversion barrel in a 9MM league against compact and full sized pistols and out scored most of the other competitors despite the short barrel. Works great, accurate and for those who style matters, it looks good too.

It's a normal 9mm barrel or a different barrel,specific for the conversion?..I'm thinking to buy a G40,and put in the 9mm barrel...or a G35 and put in a 9mm barrel...it's possible with a normal 9mm barrel (like KKM...lone wolf..etc) or I need a specific barrel for the conersion?

Lance T. At my local Walmart and other sporting goods stores,40S&W is cheaper than 9mm, especially defensive ammo or hollow points. I'm assuming it's because the demand for 9mm is much higher

Hey Karl I've carried my G 23 with a drop in barrel for years now. I originally did it because 9mm was cheaper, not now. Never had a problem with this system and i also have a 357 sig barrel. 3 types ammo one gun. Just drop in a different barrel. I've been told you can use the same mags, but I use 9mm for 9mm barrel (higher capacity). Just thought I would bring it up because of ammo shortage. Strength and Honor

Stormlake makes great barrels. I bought a 6" barrel for a Glock 21 I had. It truly was a "drop in" barrel and I never had a single malfunction/hiccup with that barrel.

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to see if they have a conversion for my Sig 226. It was my first duty weapon but it is in .357 sig and I’d rather have a 9mm. Not sure if the mags would work the same as Glock. But I’d be willing to buy mags too. Edit: just checked their site. Guess they only make conversions for Glock. Sig makes a conversion that is a complete slide barrel and mag kit. But it’s $400.

I just swapped the barrel I used the same magazines 40 cal with my nine mill and everything functions fine for practice I would not count on it for real life but practice I have not had a malfunction yet

I completely converted my 23 with the lone wolf barrel and added an ejector for 9mm. I haven’t had the chance to take it out yet but I will soon. If I need to swap out the guide rod and spring to 9mm I will. Im done with 40 s&w for now.

I am by no means an expert with this, but my understanding is that, with at least the Storm Lake barrels, you are not supposed to change the ejector because the barrel is made to position the 9mm round in the right place with with 40 S&W extractor. My understanding is that putting a 9mm ejector in with the enlarged barrel can create a dangerous situation where it can potentially dent and ignite live primers. I can't fully confirm this nor say that it is the same w/ the Wolf barrels, but you might want to call Lone Wolf before making those changes.

Just want to mention that the brass to face issue on a Glock 27 G27 Gen 2.5 with a Glock 23 G23 40-9 conversion barrel was resolved with following parts ordered and installed...(1) glsp28927 sp28927 Glock Trigger Housing (Gen 4) 40 S&W (only use the 28926 ejector)(1) Glock OEM Extractor Dep Plunger Spring SP00119/ SP33522(1) SP01176 Glock Spring Loaded Bearing 9mm & .380 Auto for Non-LCI Extractors, Black(1) SP00098 Glock Extractor 9mm (90°) for Old Style Non-LCI Slides w/ 90° Ejection PortAlso, made sure to use 9mm double stack magazines. So, yes, it works. Some have issues, some don't. And some find the right combination of parts to get it to work correctly. Good luck and happy shooting!"

I have a G27 and S&W SD9ve and really don’t notice much of difference between the recoil. The 40 is just a little snappier. Now my Ruger LCRx 357mag kicks hard. I will probably get the barrel for ammo cost and availability.

US Military should've went with a Glock 23 converted to 9 mm. Then if certain units needed a 40 cal it could still be used. A 23 modified.. like a 19X converted to 9 wouldve Been a Good Choice over the Glock 19X in trials

Just ordered my Lone Wolf 9mm non threaded barrel for my Glock 23 last night. Thinking about purchasing some Magpul magazines for it at about half price of Glock mags. I have seen videos of shooters using the 40 caliber mags with the 9mm rounds with no problems. It just doesn't sit right with me. I will no doubt practice with the 40 caliber mags but when out and about think I will go for 9mm mags. BTW it seems the Magpul mags will work fine. Do you have any experience with Magpul mags?

Yes. The Magpuls work better than all other brands Except Glock. Glock mags run best. Do NOT run any mags in a Glock except Glock and Magpul; the rest are crap

Technically, as an Engineer, shouldn't the internals last even longer than the .40 stock? The springs, etc. are made to withstand a higher pressure round, so the 9mm should be easier on everything. If you went the other way, 9mm up to .40, then you might have issues. Or am I just being a geek and overthinking this?

Well, the make of the gun can also come into play but generally speaking this is the case. For some guns, like the VP9 from H&K, the early ones everyone put VP40 springs in it because the 9mm springs were kinda... meh. (Newer VP9s shouldn't have an issue with this, but you know the saying: HK stands for "Hates Kustomers".) Me personally, I'm a much bigger proponent of buying a police trade in .40 S&W pistol for cheap and converting it to 357 Sig or using this 9mm conversion at least for people looking to pick up a first gun. It will be very cost effective, though with 357 Sig you'll want a reputable make that you know will live up to SAAMI specs because the PSI of the cartridge is a lot higher than normal. I also loathe the inconsistent recoil of the .40 S&W. It's a lot easier to train yourself to go between 9mm and 357 Sig than 9mm and .40 S&W. Conversely, it's a lot easier to train yourself to go between .45 ACP and 10mm than it is to go between .45 ACP and .40 S&W. All that being said, with proper training and ammo selection I do not think anyone would be undergunned in any of those calibers.

Yep. I shoot Pistols right handed, and Rifles usually left hand. However, for most AR videos, I film rifles shooting Right handed, as most of our videos are Right Handed. That makes following along easier. Also, you should practice shooting with both shoulders. Accurized Rifles should be shot with your better eye, but doesn't matter if the scope is parallax free. Again, practice shooting both strong and support sides.

As an instructor, I prefer to shoot whatever weapon (and caliber) the students are shooting. Many SOF units are showing up with G-19s; a few with G-23s. This conversion barrel lets me quickly cover both these classes, and my sights and trigger squeeze stay the same.

That's not a good barrel. It will not chamber some of the off the shelf CCI 9mm rounds (not reloads). I sent the barrel back to Alpha twice and it's no different. I sent casings along with it to demonstrate. They were like a cork in a bottle and jammed in the barrel They work fine in 12 other 9mm pistols I have as well as another after market conversion barrel. Alpha even went as far as to tell me that the casing must have expanded when fired in a Glock because of loose tolerances in Glocks. I told him, for the 4th time, that it wasn't fired in a Glock. And the spent casings still fit in all other 9mm pistols perfectly. If you want a 9mm barrel, and you want to be able to get rounds off the shelf and know they will work, don't get an Alpha. When I told them I'd take them up on the offer to refund, they stopped responding to my emails. I have all the emails to go along with the story.
