That would be much appreciated. I am still very confused about when floating and bonded is needed. You see various generators that are marketed as whole-house emergency generators yet some are bonded and others are floating. I doubt anyone is buying the Predator 9500 for their RV due to the size and weight.

I always appreciate your videos. There are a few good videos of why to use which (bonded or floating). Even after explaining it some people still confuse it. A good rule of thumb is if evrrything is plugged into your generator, bond it. If your generator is plugged into anything that is already bonded (breaker panel, etc.), then it needs to be floating.

@eosjoe565 Harbor Freight technical support told me that all of their 240V generators are neutral bonded, and their 120V generators are unbonded. That explains why the Predator 9500 inverter generator is bonded, but my Predator 3500 inverter generator for the RV is unbonded.

This is an extremely valuable video for so many people. It was mentioned to place a toggle switch, which is a great idea. Maybe a possible video on that. I like the idea of gathering info on many generators to show the location of the bond on different models. Just show the location and give the models. Note: The Genmax 9000 and the Duromax 9000 is the same procedure as the preditor 9500. Thanks again.

On some models of this generator there is a jumper from the far right 120 volt socket at the bottom to the ground wire of the plug ,just remove white jumper on one end and heat shrink it at the terminal and your good.

I called Harbor Freight technical support, and they shared these steps to make it a floating neutral like all of their 120V generators. I appreciate your video. I'm glad it doesn't void the warranty. I'm connecting to the house with a 100A manual transfer switch. I understand I won't be able to use any 40A circuits like oven range or A/C with the 7600 running watts of the generator.
@steve_713_
@steve_713_ 6 ай бұрын
Why wouldn't it be able to run an AC or electric range? 7600 watts is plenty especially when it has an additional 2400 watts for start ups. You might have to install a "soft start" to keep your AC from creating too much of a surge ehen starting. But 7500 should be enough for a household AC.

You can make it bonded again by taking a plug just wire common to ground plug that plug into one of the receptacles on the generator it's bonded again. This would be for if you need to use it as a standalone unplug it from the house and plug in something directly to one of the generator receptacles.

I just ordered a TMG Industrial 10500 watt generator ( which looks like its made by the same Chinese company that makes Genmax) and plan to modify it with a switch to change between "neutral bonded to frame" and "floating neutral" for use with natural gas and my Generlink transfer switch. Frankly companies should do this standard with these larger gennies usually used for home backup.. This will allow me to power the whole home for 36 cents an hour rather than $5 an hour with gas as natural gas is dirt cheap here in Ontario, Canada.

Did this lift the neutral from the grounding rod point or all the receptacles as well? Did you meter the neutral and ground on the receptacles after? Why I mentioned this is some generators bond neutral and ground in the generator windings as well so lifting just this ground rod neutral point may not float the neutral on the receptacles.

It’s good to see this channel getting more technical, I think it’s what it needed. But it’s important to get these details right. Some things are just casually mentioned and they aren’t entirely accurate. You can’t just say “if using a transfer switch, then keep it bonded.”, because there are two types of transfer switches. If using a switched-neutral transfer switch, then keep it bonded. If using a transfer switch that only switches the hots, then make it floating. Here’s a video that covers those details. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJqxi4lmod6FjLM

To bond or not to bond your generator. A very hot rabbit hole subject indeed and the nuances gets quite muddied depending on the application on how it's applied. Majority of the RV and travel trailers out there if properly wired, the neutral is floating and the ground is bonded to the frame of the coach. Where the two actually meets together when you plug into the power pedestal or your generator. That's why it is very important to test your RV power point receptacles for open neutral and/or ground before plugging in. Those types of faults not only creates a potential shock hazard, but also nuisance tripping of GFCI receptacles in your coach since they have quite sensitive current sensor to detect the imbalance of the hot and neutral lines. The ground is also needed for the proper reference and it helps suppress stray current spikes to minimize false tripping. In my case, I am going to leave it bonded since I use my Predator 9500 for standalone purposes for the majority of the time and maybe a handful of occasions when the grid goes down using the 30 amp generator input socket. Will it cause issues, more than likely not. Up to code, no not really. Electricity is behaves in funny ways and I understand the risks. If you're going to use it for only whole home backup purposes and nothing else, then it is best practice to have the neutral floating at the generator since your home electrical service panel will establish the neutral ground bond there for you. For those who like to dive a little bit deeper into the National Electric Code (NEC) aspects on it. Just be prepared to get your belt and suspenders on, because things are gonna get a bit geeky in this mug. :-P Grounding - Safety Fundamentals (1hr:13min:19sec) by Mike Holt kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6HKcol7abqqfNk

This definitely is one of the more sensitive ones that most people are going to have issues with. We all use our generators for multiple reasons. Me personally I will be using the bonding plug for the Rv to prevent gfi from tripping and surge protector use. Thanks Felax very well said This will help

Great videos. Highly informative. I am curious what you are doing with all those generators? Anyways I have two questions. Question one is that if I convert this to a floating neutral, can I still use the outlet on the generator itself? Second question is, would it not be better to add a switch? That way I can flip the switch when I’m powering the house and then flip the switch again when I need to use the generator as portable power?

@@GeneratorReviews thanks for fast reply. What I meant by switch was that for example, I’m considering gm9000 generator. To make it go floating from bonded, you remove the neutral wire from ground behind the panel. Could I not attach a switch, and then one end to the neutral/ground connection where the neutral was previously connected, and the other end to the neutral wire? Then I could close the switch which will connect neutral to ground, and when I have to connect the generator to the house, flip the switch on the generator which will make it open, breaking the neutral to ground. Any thoughts? Didn’t understand your 240v statement. Could you elaborate please?

@GeneratorReviews My Inlet box is is connect to my 10 circuit reliance transfer switch. My transfer switch connects to the main power panel. The inlet is grounded to the 10 circuit transfer switch. The 10 circuit transfer switch has a ground and neutral that goes back to the main power panel. The main power panel has it own ground with a neutral bar. Now my question is.. is my generator supposed to be a floating neutral but I heard thats extremely dangerous...Right now it bonded neutral it works and all but it doesn't pass code. Its the delima that a lot of people are facing. one setup will kill you and the other "might" trip your breaker and have electricity flowing where its not. This is why im confused 😕.

I'm still confused about the specific applications where bonded and floating neutral generators are used. Bonded generators are used to power stand alone tools or appliances. Floating neutral generators are used to power a home where the G-N are bonded in the panel. For use on a RV, the generator should be bonded as the RV typically sees the G-N bond at the campground pedestal. The beginning of this video contradicts itself when it says coverting to a floating neutral when connected to a RV or transfer switch and then in the next sentence says it needs to be bonded for use on a RV. I see most large generators are bonded for safey when using stand alone tools. I don't understand why small inverter type generators are floating neutral since they will almost always power stand alone tools or a RV.

UPDATE THE MARKING: I strongly feel you need to update/ remake this video to show remarking the bond status. “Marking shall be provided by the manufacturer to indicate whether or not the generator neutral is bonded to the generator frame. Where the bonding of a generator is modified in the field, additional marking shall be required to indicate whether the generator neutral is bonded to the generator frame.” Otherwise a nice tutorial video.
