Hi, Javier! In my journey to purchasing and owning a Genmax 9000IEDC generator, I've appreciate your helpful videos. I wanted to let you know that when I went to unbond my new Genmax 900iEDC, the neutral wire is not / no longer at the end of the ground bar as shown in your video. Everything else was the same, but the Genmax moved the neutral to ground white jumper cable to the ground screw on the far right (looking from front) 120v plug. I think they moved it since It is actually much easier to get to. For reference, I purchased in MN at the end of October 2024. Just thought you might want to know in case others got the point of your video and couldn't find the neutral at the end of the ground bar - it moved. I sent you a picture to your email noted in posts below if you have a place I can post to for the benefit of others (I don't really do KZbin videos) :)

All portable generators will be bonded because they are required to have GFCI breakers. I noticed Westinghouse the manual shows how to un-bond it. Great idea using the plug to make it bond again. That way no one will get shocked using a GFCI plug if something goes wrong using it as a standalone generator.

Thank you for a very informative video. I suggest one modification to your wiring procedure. The White neutral wire splits and is attached to the bar you identified and to another screw terminal on the panel. There is continuity between both terminals. Disconnect the white wire from the bar (as you do) and just attach the ring connectors for both wires under the same screw on that other terminal. That way the Neutral is securely connected and there isn't a chance for the shrink wrap to fall off. I was lazy and purchased a 120V bonding plug but I had several GFCI's trips when I was running the generator, stand alone. I think the bonded plug on only one electrical leg caused GFCI problems. I made a bonded plug using a spare 50A plug and 6 AWG wire. That worked great because the 2 hot blades on the plug were removable; so ONLY the Neutral and Ground blades are actually plugged into the generator. No hot wires are inside the 50A plug. This arrangement still maintains all the 120V receptacles for actual use. I don't expect to ever use a 240 Volt tool powered by the generator so I am not losing a receptacle. I have to remove the bonded plug to connect to my house so I can't forget and have 2 locations where the neutral and ground are bonded.

@no1but24 been working on it today. Mine is different but, I see what you are saying. Far right loops all the other grounds on a terminal. (Mine is not white). I believe my problem is that the ground on that gfi is stripped and was never tight. The screw was threaded out and just hanging with the ground wire hanging on the screw. Wonder if this was a refurbished model. It was purchased from Amazon. Definitely a stripped thread in the plug. Thanks for responding.

This was an excellent video and you did a superb job. Lots of good info here. My Westinghouse Wgen 9500 gas generator provides how to remove the ground jumper wire to float the neutral which was a different maneuver than what you did but does the same thing, converts the generator to a floating neutral. I think and I could be wrong but I believe that there are a lot of generators in use that DID NOT convert their bonded frame to floating. Get this, I had two well established electricians out to my house to quote installing a transfer switch and not one knew what I was talking about. The first guy told me that it would be fine as is. I believed him until I started to research this procedure more throughly and it became clear to me why this has to be accomplished if you intend to connect your generator to your main or a sub panel. The second electrician after viewing the gens user manual (that I didn’t show the first electrician) agreed that the generator has to be converted as it says to do so in bold letters in the user manual. I understand why a lot of people get pissed when they learn that this process has to be reversed if you use your gen as a stand alone power source. But that trick you showed us with the plug, super cool! So does this plug trick work with any generator that the has been converted to floating neutral no matter how your mfg. instructs you to do it? Did you use a male 30 amp plug to make that? Where did you learn this? Sorry this was long. Had a lot to say.

Thanks for your reviews and advice. I just bought one via your link. It came with floating neutral...so it's changed. They include a 110 bonding plug but when you plug it in it trips the gfci. I have a bonding plug on an older generator without gfci and it works....but this one has me stumped
@JavierRivera

GFCI are very sensitive you can not connect anything to the GFCI that varies the load, need to be constant. You are better off connecting your RV to the 30a or 50 amp outlets depending on your RV requirements. Also using a multimeter you could test the RV OUTLET to be sure that the RV is already Neutral bonded.

Finally got around to doing this today, the whole thing was so easy until getting the two nuts off on the bonding rail. Especially the one closer to the middle. Just barely enough room to get a small ratchet into that space, and they didn't loosen at all to be taken off by finger. Had to ratchet them off the entire way. If you jumper a wire from ground to neutral on and with a GFCI receptacle it will trip. It cannot be done. Try sticking a wire stripped at both ends and into a GFCI outlet in your bathroom GFCI outlet or kitchen and it will instantly trip. I recently converter my Genmax to a floating neutral as well; however, when plugging in a neutral to ground bonding plug in a 120V outlet, it trips the GFCI. Any ideas why this is happening? I checked voltage between neutral and ground when the unit is running. Shows about 2V when idle, but if a load is plugged in to the 120, there starts to be a decent voltage diff, between 8V and 20V depending on the load. The voltage diff is on both the 120V and 240V plugs.

Did you build the bonded plug 🔌 like I did in the video? If you will be connecting things directly to the generator you need that bond that is why I created a bond plug with the plugs that came with the generator. Another thing. GFCI outlets don’t like things that fluctuate in amps and voltage. For example if you are connecting a refrigerator is very likely that will trip. But if you connect something that will draw a constant amps and voltage then will not trip the GFCI.

There really aren't many points, it's very dangerous to have the neutral bonded at the generator and in the house, virtually all house are neutral bonded, therefore either you have to break the bond at the generator, or at the house using a power/ neutral disconnect. If this sounds Greek to you? Don't be stupid, hire an electrician. What I did, is add a jumper disconnect on the battery side of the generator, putting a jumper off the main white ground wire, that way I can just remove the battery panel and easily plug, or unplug the quick disconnect. Depending on whether the generator is connected to the house, or being used on a job site.

Drill a hole in the front cover, insert toggle switch then label: onboard neutral engaged / onboard neutral dis-engaged aka on/off - no need for building a bonding plug. Using that "bonding" plug is a good idea BUT... if that plug gets lost or someone forgets to use it, the generator may not be safe for stand-alone usage. A clearly marked switch to bond/unbond would be much safer.

Hi Javier, it’s been 9 months since I last reached out to you. I have since sold my champion generator (non-inverted model) and bought a Genmax 7250iedc, thanks to all of you on KZbin that spoke highly of the quality of Genmax generators, it was a no brainer for me to buy a Genmax! So I’ve been trying to convert my Genmax to a floating neutral and reached out to Genmax support for assistance a few times, but unsuccessful with my conversion attempts due to conflicting information provided. Last week, I reached out to Genmax again, and I was given your KZbin video (sent as an attachment) from tech support…kudos to you my friend! Following your steps, I believe I got it, finally! So my concern now that the generator is floating neutral, is it still safe to use the 120v outlets for any electrical devices? Do you ground your generator or is the neutral bonding plug is sufficient enough? Thanks in advance and for sharing your expertise!

What they have changed is that that neutral to ground bonding wire (the white wire) is no longer on the ground bar shown in Javier's video. Rather, Genmax moved the neutral to ground white jumper wire to the ground screw on the far right (looking from front) 120v outlet. I think they moved it since It is actually much easier to get to. So you still need make your generator floating neutral to be safe when connected to your house panel. The procedure is the same, but you remove the white wire from the screw on the bottom of the far right (looking from front) 120V outlet. @JavierRivera

Hello. I don’t have a transfer switch. I have a power inlet connected directly to the breaker panel using an interlocking system. Cheaper. The interlocking system is just a safety metal plate that doesn’t let you turn on the 50amp power inlet breaker unless you turn off the main BIG breaker that is feeding the breaker panel. Then I manually only turn on the breakers that I need, as you do with a transfer switch. I believe you will need a 4-pole transfer switch if you do not want to modify your generator. I just noticed one flaw with this generator while watching this video as I need to do this. The 50A plug is right above the cover that sticks out, so my cable while the correct type cant plug in. As I look online EVERY N14-50 cable is a right angle like that so none of them will fit. So it almost forces you to use the included piece to make your own, or buy another one online to make your own cable. I cant find any pre-fab cable with a straight plug, or a small pigtail to extend it to prevent me from having to cut the cord or buy a different one.

Hi. It took me a second to understand your message. If you talk about the black cover that I removed on the video. I don’t think it would be a problem it is very shallow. But I haven’t tried with a right angle plug yet so you could be right. If you order a pre-fab right angle 50amp cable make sure is at Amazon and that the Return Policy is Returnable just in case. I would suggest that you build one. Most of pre-fab 50amp cords are 6/3 + 8/1 instead of 6/4. What that means is that 3 cables are #6 but the ground is #8. It will work? Yes but I prefer all 4 cables to be #6 and installed. Also when you build it you have the chance to pick a better quality cord.

Hi, Javier. No luck. Still had continuity after disconnecting those two Green/Yellow wires. I swear this unit does not look them same as your’s or the one shown in the Genmax tutorial on how to unbond the neutral. I’ve removed every panel and can’t locate where that connection is made. Multiple calls in to Genmax with no response this morning. Looks like their customer service is living up to it’s billing. Maybe others will start to see the same issue if they really have made a change and report the solution. 🤞Thanks.

@@bdy8218 so you have a 9000ied? did you tested before disconnecting anything? To be sure that it was neutral bonded from the factory? Like I said I am not aware of Genmax switch the 9000ied to Floating Neutral from the factory. Can you send me pictures or video to javieryter@outlook.com ?

Hey Javier! I've been continuing my research on this generator and have run across a few (not many) reviews of poor quality craftsmanship and the lack of good customer service. I'm not particularly handy (as you appear to be), so I'd like your honest feedback on purchasing the GM9000iED. Is it a crap shoot? I know you need to be careful when posting any concerns you may have, but many of us depend on an honest evaluation from folks like you. Thanks, Gene

Hi. 1st most of other people complaining about craftmanship is because is made in China. The question is what is not made in China now a day? Also do they own one? Most if not all of those who criticize do not own one. Now this is my honest opinion. I own one and I am happy with my generator. About customer service you could call or email. I decided to email because I sent them pictures and videos and I decided to contact Genmax china directly. Every time I sent an email every time I received an answer. Genmax is a new company that is still developing in US and expanding. So far I only had a problem with the total hours display and I received a new one in one week straight from China. Now that being said I understand your concern and I am curious myself about how support would be if I had major repair that has to be done by an expert. I would contact Genmax with a. Few questions and I would update you.

So when you buy this generator it's not ready to use on your home?
@JavierRivera
@JavierRivera 2 жыл бұрын
The answer is NO if you would be connecting it to your breaker panel. Come ready to connect appliances directly to the generator or even an RV can be connected to the generator. But If you would be feeding a breaker panel that already has the Neutral Bonding connection you need to break the bonding in the generator. Unless you connect it to a type of transfer switch that comes ready to accept a Neutral Bonded Generator.

Does anyone that has a Genmax9000iE know where I can find the Serial number?
@JavierRivera
@JavierRivera 2 жыл бұрын
The serial number is a white sticker with a bar code and a number. Usually is located on top of the generator to the side.

Why don't manufacturers put a switch on generators to do this
@JavierRivera
@JavierRivera 2 жыл бұрын
That is the same question that I have, I thought about installing a switch, but I have not found one switch that I like. If you found one that will work with wire #8 and that the switch is plastic or covered in rubber, let me know. OH, and that can be installed on the front panel.

So what happens if you don't open or interrupt the ground circut on the generator and hook it up to the house?

Caution! Consider disconnecting the battery before loosening the panel! A slip up could fry an expensive generator!

It was an error on their part to not make this easy to do, like just flipping a readily accessible switch. Then the 50 amp receptacle would still be available for use.

All generators have the same issue
@x01e

Your making it more difficult and more dangerous with this suggestion if someone forgets to insert the plug when using the generator stand alone. The simple solution that accomplishes the same is to not connect the ground wire from your panel on your inlet box. Again the 50 amp inlet box you use to connect the generator to your panel, lift the ground wire from your panel so your generator will be ground when powering your house panel.

Is by code

Terrible advice and illegal. The generator comes bonded for a reason. Connecting an inlet to your house is supposed to be bonded and grounded.
@JavierRivera
@JavierRivera Жыл бұрын
No. Is required by code to have 1 bond only. If you connect it to a house is the right thing to do. Portable generators come bonded because are meant to be used standalone meaning you connect everything directly to the generator but if used to feed a house breaker panel you have to remove the bond.

Odd, usually most bonding is done at the powerhead with a ground wire to the neutral but it is manufacture specific. Know your equipment, just remember if the generator is used in a stand alone configuration again that Bond must be reestablished for safety.
