How to convert your car to run on Hydrogen

Internal combustion engines are designed to run on vaporized liquids like gasoline or diesel fuel. They are not designed to run on a gaseous fuel like hydrogen, but by mixing hydrogen with a small quantity of liquid water we can make it behave like a vaporized liquid. Gasoline is 13% hydrogen and 87% carbon, it goes into the cylinders as a vaporized liquid. If we remove the carbon, we are left with gaseous hydrogen. Gaseous hydrogen has some unique characteristics that make it almost impossible to use as a fuel in an internal combustion engine, but by mixing the right amount of hydrogen with the right amount of water at the right time, hydrogen behaves like a vaporized liquid and can be substituted for gasoline or diesel fuel in any internal combustion engine.

@@sorasco1 Hydrogen burns very very fast and very hot. The carbon in gasoline slows the burn speed and reduces it's temperature. If your going to burn pure hydrogen in a gasoline engine adding a small quantity of vaporized water can reduce the burn speed and temperature so the hydrogen behaves more like gasoline. Check out Mike Copeland at Arrington Performance. He has 2 machines running on hydrogen.

I found that if you convert the car to run on CNG first then all you have to do is switch the fuel but you must then recalibrate the computer to match the different fuel you are now using. With hydrogen many people don't know this but you can slow down it's burn rate by regulating the exhaust gases sent into the mixture by the EGR system. What this does is basically creates a traffic jam by putting a bunch of stuff in the combustion chamber that doesn't support the burning process thus slowing down the time it takes for the hydrogen to find and combine with the oxygen. Then there is yet another trick in how to increase the energy content of the reaction and that is by ionizing the hydrogen prior to injecting it into the combustion chamber so that it enters the combustion chamber as a monatomic hydrogen gas atom instead of a hydrogen molecule. There are many other things I know about using hydrogen as I have been studying this for years. This is why I say with confidence hydrogen is the fuel of the future.

@@johan8724 Using a Hydrogen wet cell or dry cell with pulse width modulation matching the ignition timing of the spark plug is a good way to do it as pulsating current is more efficient at separating the Hydrogen from the water. Matching the ignition timing for the spark plug with a PWM circuit is a good way of making sure the voltage and pulses get larger and faster as the rpm rises so you don't run out of fuel.

You can convert existing engines to run on Hydrogen even if they don’t have direct injection from the factory, but you need to modify the engine by putting on a head that allows for direct injection, so the head would have to be an aftermarket one specially designed for direct injection

Why not use carburetor’s instead of fuel injectors for Hydrogen? Does hydrogen lubricate the cylinder walls? If not you’ll have to lubricate it with oil after every dedination of fuel.

Actually hydrogen don't produce CO2 because there's no carbon in the mix when it explodes if you had oxygen to your hydrogen combustion you have water not CO2 you have H2O

There is so much misinformation about hydrogen fuel cars in the USA. Any car can be switched over. You dont need a special engine, you dont need hydrogen fueling stations. You can make and collect your own hydrogen outsidr at your home. Heck you can even run the electric for the electrolysis with solar. Install a few tanks with bottle warmers, pipe all bottles into one going to the carb or throttle body. You will also need to recalibrate your ignition system to adjust the spark rate and whatnot. But thsts all it takes

I have tried to get into converting cars trucks and any thing that runs on diesel or petrol .But always seem to run into a brick wall ! Trying to get all the parts I need top build /convert these vehicles ,Im in a unique postion as I have acess to unlimited Hydrogen ,and 700bar Kevlar Carbon Fiber tanks to hold it in .Yes I have , through my friend the possibilty to use the hydogen , which at his company is a byproduct and only used for industrial purposes , not mobility . I have been given lots of advice but its been mostly old school bullshit ! Anybody clever out there that could put me on the right path ? I live in hope !

I don't think it is possible to convert existing engines but rather, swap with engines that are designed specifically for hydrogen combustion. It is clear the engine must be direct injection as port injection only increases the chance of pre-ignition. Turbocharging is a must for a hydrogen engine. Some of the major benefits an ICE engine will see from burning hydrogen is much longer engine oil life, little to no carbon fouling (think intake valves, EGR, etc), smaller catalytic converters and emissions control systems (which will allow the engines to be more efficient/more powerful). Hydrogen engines make a ton of sense, especially for heavy equipment. I think they could for cars too but it depends. If the hydrogen internal combustion engine can achieve similar efficiency (which may only be possible with a hybrid system) to that of a fuel cell, then it stands a chance of being a thing. If not, if compressed gas remains the standard, the tanks will be quite large which will affect vehicle packaging and practicality. With that said though, if it is close, ICE will be cheaper to build and thus more affordable to consumers. Fuel cells need significantly more air intake cleaning as they are quite sensitive to being fouled by dust and dirt. Common sense tells me that a hydrogen IC engine would be much more robust than its fuel cell counterpart. I would not be surprised at all if Toyota releases a new powertrain for its vehicles within the next decade which uses a hydrogen fueled turbocharged inline-3 or 4 mated to a hybrid synergy drive eCVT. Actually I would be shocked if this didn't happen within the next decade.

Toyota did test their hydrogen powered Yaris about a year ago, which showed promising results. Converting an engine to run of hydrogen is a but tricky but feasible, just takes some experience knowing what you're doing and not potentially messing it up.

But instead of using a giant fuel source like that and a tank you can put a hydrogen on demand system on a car using the Electric System and a hydrogen on demand using electrolysis you know you see these kids all over the internet people are running just their car no gasoline just the kid on their engine in the UK Australia in France some of these old beaters that shouldn't be on the road but they're running it on hydrogen HHO system so you could do that as a hybrid gasoline and HHO system and you have a almost no CO2 because the hydrogen combustion burns the carbon out of the that and uses the oxygen as a you know turns it into water and that carbon after it's been burned goes into your catalytic converter and gets disposed of that way too
