Many mountain and gravel bikes today come with tubes in the tires but also include valve stems and sealant to make the conversion to tubeless. This video shows how it's done.

Ty so much Clint. While I have ridden MTB for over two decades and gravel since 2013, I was hesitant on going tubeless until very recently. i will try it out.

I’ll always stay with my Tubes. Seems more resilient on sharp rocks. Plus it’s just way to messy and added weight with all that sealant. Thanks Clint take care.

Definitely a matter of personal preference. But just remember a tire with sealant is lighter than a tire with tubes. I typically drop at least a pound off a bike when I take the tubes out and add sealant. In that rotation of weight which makes a big difference.

I remember the first time I (tubeless) rode Moab with my son (tubes). He faltted 3 times on Porcupine. I haven't flatted in close to 20 years. Party like it's 1999!

At about 6:15. I know you're aware, but as a PSA, maximum pressures are applicable to both the tire and the rim. Usually, max rim pressure is lower. Exceeding it can cause the tire to pop off the rim. Had it happen to a buddy. Not a super big deal unless you get sprayed with sealant, and it can ruin the tire.

Right. You still have to set the compressor to a fairly high psi, like 80 to 90 at least. That gives the initial surge of air to get the beads to seat in the rim. Especially with mountain bike tires, the tire will not inflate too fast where you can’t control it. You can just feel the tire with your hands and make sure you don’t go above about 40 psi.

Will stock rims and tires say “tubeless ready” if your able to convert to tubeless? My Scott MTB came with tubes. How do you know if able to convert or not? Great video Clint!

I would like to add one bit of caution. When using an air compressor . Make sure the regulator is set to a PSI that is with in the spec of whatever tire/rim combo you are using. I was rushing the other day setting a tire with compressor. I found out the hard way . Regulator was mistakenly set to 90PSI. Tire blew off rim…destroying tire. 😟.

Definitely need to be careful. You do need to have about 90+ psi in the compressor to get that initial surge of air to get the beads to seat in the rim. But you need to feel the tire as you inflate to make sure it does not go above a normal range. Not that hard to do but, as you said, you need to pay attention.

@@ClintGibbs my compressor will be 90-100….the regulator 50ish. With the valve core off I blast the tire on. I was looking at wrong guage. (I usually use my bontrager floor pump with the air chamber …. That works really well. Anyway just thought I would mention…not only did the tire get ruined….sealant went everywhere 😱

Have you ever worked or rode with Continental Race King tires? I've used them with my now defunct mtb, and they have a tendency to develop a wobble. I'm not sure if it's due to repeated punctures, old age, or tubes of poor quality. I always install my tires and tubes correctly and make sure the indicator line is evenly shown around the tire, but it still has that tendency to wobble. What do you think it could be?

Poor quality control, I will not use those tires. I have had them come apart where the channel bead separates from the tire when going on some fast berms that I rail.

Have you ever tried repairing a puncture that couldn’t be sealed with an internal cold patch?

A few years ago I repaired a sliced sidewall of my MTB tire using a leather stitching awl, heavy leather stitching thread, and sealed it all up with vulcanizing cement. Has held up just fine.

Thanks!! How long does the sealant last?
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 8 ай бұрын
Really depends on temperature and humidity and Riding and how old the tire is. A new tire can last 3 to 5 months. But I’ve seen sealant dry up in a few weeks. Really good to check it every few weeks by just opening up the bead and looking at it.

Going tubeless these days is a no brainer for mountain bikes. Once you see the benefits of going tubeless, it's unlikely you will go back to tubes. I prefer to put the tire on first and then inject the sealant through the valve stem.

If you don’t want to invest in valve stems, you can cut them off old tubes, as long as it has a lock nut, it works fine👌

Great info, but here is some ground breaking info you should be aware of. The LAST hurdle of differentiating what makes a expensive mountain bike expensive has been obliterated with electronic 7 to 13 speed groupsets on the market for 450 bucks battery included and three different size cage versions. The reviews will be posted soon and i expect it works. This technically says that you can HAVE the most advanced mountain bike on the market for a fraction of the cost of bikes you are showing on your channel. There will be no advertisement as usual, unless somebody brands it because it isnt needed for sales worldwide. Trying to sell 10,000 dollar bikes just got harder.

Interesting that you did not get a pop on the bead . It might worry me a bit but I use a compressor on all my tubeless setup . I also always use soap around the bead . Nicely done .
