Awesome video! I've been running tubeless for about 15 years. The one recommendation I'd make to my younger self would be to invest in a good air compressor from the start. I like the ones from California Air Tools. Not only will it save you tremendous time and headache getting these things to seal, but it opens up a whole new world for other tools for around the house. Just consider it an investment that will serve you well for many many years.

Trying to run gorilla tape on my envies makes it much harder to roll a tire around the rim with the extra thickness of the tape. So I do go for stands tape, it makes getting the tire on my rim possible. As well, reusing your tube valve is a good idea if it has a removable core. (Making refreshing your sealant easier). Although running tubeless you should still carry a tube in that off chance you get a hazard flat. So go buy another tube.after cutting up your perfectly good one. Or maybe you could find an old tube that has already a puncture and utilize that valve. But again I doubt you will have a removable core.

This worked like a charm! I used extreme hold tape from 3m that I had laying around in the garage to tape the rims, slime from O'Reilly auto part store - large bottle 946ml $14, old punctured 26in tube presta valve cut out just like the video and also a regular floor stand bike pump. Estimate I used 120ml of slime for each 29in tire. Awesome video and great DIY tips for cheap! Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I did like this to my older 26" Trek 8500 with Mavic Crossride non tubeless rims. Tires are lightweight but anyway tubeless ready Schwalbes Nobby Nic front and Fat Albert rear. It works great but I had to use air compressor to get the tires to seat on the rims. This is the cheapest way to go tubeless. In the future I will use anyway specific tubeless valves as then I can add the sealant through the valve as those have removable valve cores. Another extra thing I will do in the future is I will install the tires first without the sealant after I have put Gorilla tape. Then I will fill them to 40 psi so the Gorilla tape will attach even firmer to the rim. After this I will add the sealant and refill them. I clean the rims with CRC Bräkleen brake cleaner and when I put the Gorilla tape I put it on the rim very firmly and make sure there is no air left under the tape. I found Stan´s No Tubes tubeless valves for great price only around 3,50 euro per valve (-60% from the normal price). Gorilla tape is a good and cheap method. It costs here only 3 euro per 9 meter (25 mm width). One Gorilla tape roll can be used with around 6 rims (at least with 26" rims). So total price per rim is around 4 euro in the future + tire and sealant. I used now Zefal sealant around 60-80 ml per tire which costed 30 euro for 1 liter (1000 ml). So sealant cost per tire is around 2 euro. I also ordered Orange Seal Endurance sealant for use with more difficult tires like Schwalbe Racing Ralph very lightweight and thin (read porous) sidewall version. It should seal even better.

First, this is a super clear, well done video, much better than 99% of how to videos on youtube. Below was my experience applying what I learned from this video to convert my 29er 2.2" tires to tubeless. Overall the advice was great, but it took two attempts to make it seal properly. In my case, I did not have a pump with a reservoir or a high speed inflator, either of which I think would have made my first attempt work better, since in the initial inflation there are so many places for air to escape (and sealant to leak out). I used my Ryobi 18 volt battery powered electric inflator, which is not terribly fast. I think it probably helps if the tire is inflated really fast (i.e. with a pump that delivers a high volume of air per second) when doing the initial seal. Also, the casual finger tightening of the valve nut did not seal the valve well enough. On my second attempt, the partial messy sealing from the first attempt made for fewer big air gaps for leakage plus I tightened the valve nut with pliers, to reduce the air gap around the valve as it was trying to seal. For the second attempt the following day I added about 30 ml more sealant, spread it around inside the tire on each side and inflated it again. This time I was able to get it pretty quickly up to 60 psi, where I left it for several hours to let the tire seat and the sealant do its magic. This time there was far less sealant leakage, it seated nicely and the gauge climbed pretty fast up to 60 psi. Mission accomplished. Thanks again for making this tutorial. Time to ride.

I absolutely would only do the valve stem trick if they have removable valve cores. The cores get gummed up and need replacing from time to time, plus it's so much easier to remove the core and add a sealant refresh through the valve than popping off your sealed tire and adding it that way. As an alternative to Gorilla tape, which leaves a horror show of adhesive on the rim, Scotch 8896 strapping tape works a treat and one roll does many tires. Lastly, TruckerCo sealant seems to be the most economical out there, and I've had no problems with it sealing most punctures (Road, TT, cyclocross, MTB - yes, I've converted them all!)

Just did a quick test to see if my cheap plastic floor pump would seat the tire. It works! I used some narrower (narrower than the rim width) electrical tape but made sure to wrap from one rim wall to the other. Seems critical, It gives the tire bead something to grip against. It maxes out at 25-30 psi for now. No sealant yet. Lots of leaks in the tire sidewall (Conti XKings). Will redo the whole thing this weekend and put sealant.
@joshferreria6113
@joshferreria6113 6 жыл бұрын
Update: redid the whole setup with gorilla tape and Ryder sealant. Took a few days to fully seal on my non-tubeless rim and tire (Continental XKing) Critical step is to let the wheel lie flat on each side so that sealant gets on the sidewalls.
@joshferreria6113
@joshferreria6113 6 жыл бұрын
Update: just completed a test ride on the trails. I tried riding as rough as I could, bashing the tire around on rocks and roots, just to see if the bead would burp air. It works great, no leaks & no burps. Ran it at 30 psi then down to 20psi. Sweet spot is somewhere in the middle for my setup.

Seems like normal MTB tires work as well, at least Maxxis advertises this for their tires: r2-bike.com/MAXXIS-Tire-REKON-29-x-260-Dual-Compound-TR-EXO Tubeless Ready (TR) tube loose tires have many advantages: you can drive with less air pressure. This gives better traction and reduces rolling resistance. And where there is no tube , the breakdown risk also decreases. MAXXIS TR tires are better prepared for installation with sealant than other "tubeless ready" tires. The bead of the TR tire is like a real UST tube peeling completely covered with a rubber layer. As a result, tube assembly on all rims with standard dimensions is already successful on initial inflation and with little liquid. Even "normal" MAXXIS MTB tires can be mounted like other Tubeless tires with sealant as the carcass fabrics are very dense. Officially released for tubeless assembly and guaranteed by MAXXIS are only the new MAXXIS TR models. Tubeless mounting of other models is at your own risk.

Just did this over the weekend. Gorilla tape and old presta stems. I used 3/8 rubber faucet washers to help give a uniform seal. Did a dry air up first and they both held air. Made up some homebrew sealant and went for it. Sealed up good after a few rotations of the tires. Been holding air since Saturday. Thanks for the video!

well a tube costs around $8-$10 so 2 tubes is around $20 and for that you can buy valves and still have 2 tubes for emergency repair out on the trail, or am I wrong?
@ross5914
@ross5914 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, best to keep tubes that you have flatted with and use those I'd reckon. I do find they don't always seal as well as the tubeless valves you can buy though

Since i run a motorcycle shop i salvage the valve stems from tubes. Wrap gorrila tape around the valley then poke a small hole. Use a dremal to grind the side of valve to fit channel nice put a dab of windshield sealant push thru tighten nut lightly. Sealed rim add tire inflate seat the bead then add sealant to tire.

The use of gorilla tape caused me massive issue on my enve carbon wheels. The tape caused the beading of the tyre to become far tight in to the wall of the rim. When I did get a puncture where the sealant couldn't cope with the leak I couldn't get the tyre off the rim due to the size of the tape. So ended up with a long walk back to the car. When I got home it took me 2hrs to break the beading on the tyre so that I could get it off. I have recently removed the gorilla tape to use proper rim and again it took a long time to get the glue from the gorilla tape off the rim. So word of caution when using cheap tape and deep set wheels.

You are not bright if youre doing this to carbon rims. And if you think gorilla tape is cheap, that just goes to show your ignorance.
@rollinrat4850

madoffroader Haha, Enve tape IS rebranded Gorilla brand tape! Gorilla tape is the best. Enve just charge extra 3x for it. Enve rims are on the large side and are pretty tight for good reason. Theyre Some of the tightest rim and tire combos Ive seen! Your hands will be tired afterwards! Also only use Enve’s proprietary valves! Nothing else fits their unique rim shape. Once set up properly theyre very reliable. As you install ANY tight tire, try to keep bead in the center of rim at its smallest diameter area. Always set up your tires and inflate without sealant to make sure they hold air for more than 5 minutes, then you know theyre reliable! If not improve your set up try again, then finally inject sealant through the valve. THIS Saves on mess, frustration and wasting $ealant$$!! Your tires may be on the small side, so try thinner Stan’s tape instead or find a tire that is a little larger. NO tires or rims are the same, even from same manufacturers. It just depends on quality, manufacturing tolerances and standards used(few if any!) Standards in the bike industry have become sort of a joke! Tubeless set ups DEFINITELY require MORE patience and experimentation in many situations. Its not always as easy as they say it is. But a good result is worth the initial hassle. Theres surely a learning curve involved!

madoffroader Dont listen to these naysayers. They dont know what they talk about. The original ghetto split tube tubeless set ups, (better than whats shown here)is the most reliable best set up there is! Ive used it before tubeless was a thing 18 years ago on old rims and now on new tubeless ready rims. It took 3 years of experimenting to really dial in my set ups. I wrench in a bike shop and have tried almost all the set ups. The valve is the weak point on ALL new systems. When you use a hand pump the valve seal can be broken if you’re not careful. Leaving you with a mess on your hands and tube install , walking OR WORSE. Believe me! Ive made all the mistakes!! Ghetto doesnt have these issues. Its much cheaper and just a little extra effort. If you use rubber cement( you dont need to) you can do trials type maneuvers and not burp. Even at low pressure. I ride and bikepack to very remote places with no help or cell service, frequently alone. I demand absolute reliability out of ALL my gear. My life depends on it. I havent had A SINGLE FAILURE ( besides ripped sidewalls) in 15 years running ghetto tubeless. Even if I had carbon rims( I never will) I would still run ghetto.
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 5 жыл бұрын
madoffroader After saying all that and writing a short story, you probably cant use the split tube method on your Enve rims. Theyre just too tight. Just know you have one of the better set ups out there and GET A HAND PUMP WITH A HOSE! Such as Lezyne. For tight tires use some soapy water to help with fitting. It also helps to work with the wheel on top of a trash can to break bead or install tires. You can better utilize you strength, weight, arms and shoulders this way. Im old, my hands are always sore. I fix lots of tires every day! Ive worked with these same hands for 45 years!
