You know its a good source when a grandma is cooking. Props to all the g-mas out there!

I'm not a grandmother -- I never had children, but I accept the compliment!

I received farro at the food bank today. Looking forward to trying it. I’m 71 and have never heard of farro, can’t wait to try it.

Thanks. It turned out perfectly. When it was done cooking I added some fresh chopped rosemary, sea salt, ground pepper, a little butter and some finely grated parmesan.

I must try cooking some soon. Would you put it in vegetable soup as you would barley? I enjoy lentils and barley in my veg soup so maybe something new to try.
@Jill4Today4 жыл бұрын
Yes, adding it to soup would be a great way to use it. It's similar to barley. Hope you enjoy

Ok I know how to cook it but what do you do with it ? Just eat it ?
@Jill4Today10 ай бұрын
We eat it very much like you'd do with cooked rice. It's also very good in a veggie salad. Here's a link to a salad I like to make using farro. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXaQn2x3opebedUsi=MpwcD0IHwQiYi7-5

oh thanks Jill ... but do they have to put in that much water or just 1 inch above ?
@Jill4Today3 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could use less water. Just make sure it has enough room for the farro moving freely

And you can use this like a rice alternative with fish or meat? Is it possible to turn it into a porridge for a savoury dish? Is the cooking time longer and is it better to use a lid in that case if it's savoury? Is the cooking time longer?
@Jill4Today Жыл бұрын
You can substitute it for rice. I've never tried a porridge, but i dont know why not. It does take longer to cook than rice. I'd say follow my recipe to get an idea of best cooked time

Thank a Jill for all of your great videos. I'd be interested in knowing how people use it. I tried it a couple of years ago. I liked it. However, it must have an awful lot of fiber. I ate it as a side dish and made four hurried trips to the bathroom during the night. I do like these kinds of foods, but shy away from trying it again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@Jill4Today4 жыл бұрын
It is a high fiber grain that's for sure.

was this whole grain farro? pearled or semi-pearled?

Oh my....I don't know if farro comes in those many "varieties ." It looks dark and earthy like whole grain wheat berries

Does farro need to be soaked ?
@Jill4Today3 жыл бұрын
I've never soaked it and it always cooks up beautifully.
@maryann11878 күн бұрын
When you added the farro to the boiling water, you said it was 3/4 C. When you showed the comparison, you said you started with 1/4 C and it cooked to 3/4 C.

I think you're right, I'll make sure to clarify that in the next video! Thanks for catching that.

Little known fact, farro is actually not originally Italian. It is an ancient Egyptian grain imported from Egypt to Rome to feed the masses
