Yes, I was finally able to grow gandules (pigeon peas) in the Midwest with the Northern Adapted Pigeon Peas. The plants are new so they did not grow as much but I was glad to harvest some gandules (just 3 pounds). If the plants survive during the winter, they will get much taller and produce more gandules next summer.
In our culture, we harvest the green pods. The pigeon peas are green and tender. If they are left long enough on the plant, they will turn brown and are considered dried pigeon peas.
I created a video on how to cook fresh pigeon peas and dried pigeon peas that were harvested from my garden in the Midwest.
Once they are cooked, the difference from both types is the color. Otherwise, they have the same appearance, size and taste. Cooking and food preparation tips are provided. A video is also included harvesting the gandules. A new successful produce that was introduced to my garden this year.

First time I tried to grow pigeon peas. They went through two hurricanes this year. I live in Central Florida. I staked them back up. So you have to cook them separate before you add them to rice or soup? Glad I found your site. I would of tried to cook them with the rice raw. I may have planted too many of them 8 plants in my front yard and a 35' row in my vegetable garden. But I have Hispanic and Jamaica friends that can help me eat them.

Hi Stephen, Sorry to hear about the hurricanes in your area. You will definitely have plenty of pigeon peas. Keep in mind that you can store them in the freezer as well. You should cook the dry pigeon peas (brown pods) first before adding them to rice or soup in order to soften and expand. However, with the green pigeon peas (green pods), you just add them to the rice or soup because they are much softer and bigger. They will cook rapidly in the liquid added to the pot to prepare the rice and soup. In this video, I am just demonstrating how to cook both types of beans if you want to store them in the freezer for future use. I love to use the liquid that I cooked the beans in because it gives the soup and rice a unique flavor. This is why I cook the green pigeon peas first but it is not necessary. Watch my video dated October 23, 2022 on how to cook rice with pigeon peas, using fresh pigeon peas from my garden. Enjoy your day!

This was my first year growing them, im in north central Florida, the plants were so tall and productive! Im impressed and will grow these every year. Mine wouldn’t go straight up after the storms so I just let them lay, didn’t seem to bother them. Ill stake them next year

I have hundreds of pigeon pea trees that I use as a natural fence as the trees grow extremely fast. They're also very pretty. I have thousands and thousands of pea pods I use and give away. If anyone wants some, let me know, you're welcome to them.
