I have witnessed wild pigeon peas in Florida The company I was working for asked that we clean up the property along a fence line mostly filled with weeds.I first noticed the growth of wild tomatoes probably caused by someone throwing a slice from his lunch over the fence. My Jamaican friend went crazy finding large bushes of wild pigeon peas. Well, we only cleared what we would not eat and the next day an old lady was picking peas, a friend of my friend. I would say throw them on a patch of dirt they will grow.

I love that you reference Barbados ❤ I'm in CT so I have to take it inside. I will put each one (I have 3) in it's own pot according to your wonderful review here. I think I am going to have to have a room just for my plants this winter. I have several pots I will need to bring inside.

I started some in El Paso, TX around mid-summer. I just today got flowers and they do remind me of the Pride of Barbados! Hoping they will survive outside since they love the heat and sun here which sunburns almost everything else . We use them in Indian cooking- they are also called Toor Dhal.

Great video! So interesting about making it into tea…. I’ve never heard that so thanks for sharing. I live in south Florida and last year I planted two pigeon peas. I’m shelling them right now as I’m watching you… but if you wanlk out into my land, you’d see I now have about 100 pigeon pea trees growing!! Hahaha not sure if it was birds or what bc some of them are 100 yards away from my original trees. I’m leaving them for now because we have awfully sandy soil I’m trying to build…. But I just love how abundant these trees are and how they give us so much!

I'm just preparing to plant some here in Italy, where we have very hot, dry summers, but it does get below freezing in winter. I figure I can try pruning them down and mulch/wrapping them, and maybe they would survive, and if not, I can grow them as annuals. Thanks for the tip re using the leaves as an antiinflammatory tea! I have psoriatic arthritis, which is also auto immune, and anything natural that helps is wonderful.

I finally found some bushes here in the Yucatan. Last year I planted about 20 seeds from two different bushes. Not one made it past a foot and died!? Planted them on every side of my property, watered regularly not too wet or dry. Bushes were chopped down so I'm trying again with another bush I found. See what happens 😕.

I am in central Texas in Milam County. I want to grow some Pigeon peas in my Yard here in Cameron . But the seeds I brought when I came back from St. Kitts, did not grow ; maybe I kept them too long and they rotted. I would like to get some of them in my garden here in Cameron. As some of the other commoners said you can always either buy a bag of dried pigeon peas in the ethnic section of your grocery store or order them off of Amazon or Ebay, Marketplace and other various selling sites

Depending on where you live, you can plant in December in doors. After the last frost transplant outside. Like she said it may be a plant you keep in a pot; bring it in and out when the weather permits.

Can I grow pigeon peas in Chicago? If I start it indoors? Thank you
@huertorriquenocaribbeanbac41572 жыл бұрын
Yes!! It’ll do better as an indoor tree near a sunny window and then in the winter bring it further away from the window. The earlier in the warmth you start it the better so it’s hardier for next winter.

Hi! The leaves on my trees are turning yellow as well. There has been a lot of rain recently and the ground is water soaked so I don’t know if that has any bearing on the situation
@huertorriquenocaribbeanbac41573 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s exactly what it is. Ironically even though they’re tropical, the don’t do well in water logged situations. Let it dry out completely, an then only water of he looks thirsty.
@huertorriquenocaribbeanbac41573 жыл бұрын
Has it been raining a lot? Gandul tres get grumpy and turn yellow when they’re too wet. If you see that happening a lot, see if you can find a way to divert water away from the roots. Let it dry as much as possible and don’t water again until he looks sad. It’s always best to under water than overwater a gandule tree. They need a lot of water as babies but later are actually drought resistant.

@@huertorriquenocaribbeanbac4157 what growing zone are you in? Wondering how they would do in 9b in full sun?
@ajalicea1091 Жыл бұрын
@@chosen2030 Most likely you'll have to do like she said about planting them in a pot. You can keep on the short side and bring them in and out as weather permits. Unless you have a greenhouse that will keep the frost off of them it will die outside. You can always do like what I do plant some outside and see how it does. Due to various geographical areas they can possibly survive even in the cold. When living in North Carolina was able to grow bananas.
