I retired at 47, having worked as a controller for a global 50 for over 20 years and retired to Baja, Mexico. I did nothing for 2 years and became restless and started a very successful business catering to local Mexicans. Now I plan on franchising my business. You must stay busy and continue using your skill sets.. I do not plan on ever stop working.

Wow. Your comment about some days not wanting to go outside and be “other” struck such a cord with me. Today was one of those days. Maybe it’s important we give ourselves those days to give ourselves a break as expats. It can be so overwhelming. I’m so glad you posted this because knowing I am not alone makes me feel a part of this group of expats. We are all going through these complicated emotions.

Good thing for me I have my family to travel with, but my dad has been a solo traveler for 6 years. He must've been lonely but he's seen some amazing places.

Thanks Angelique for sharing. She mentioned that she had trouble connecting in China but not in the Dominican Republic or Italy. I wonder if she had tried to find hobbies in common with some Chinese people, like mahjong, if that might have been a way to meet local people there and connect?

You are so right on....sometimes the language barrier, or even the accents, are exhausting. I would get to where I just wanted to be where we all had the same American accent, and would stay at "home" just to avoid being around the differences in speaking.
