Great video. Although I would feel so much more confident about tackling this project if you had shown how to do the sleeves. :)

Yay I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks so! I did have to whip out the zip zag to finish some waistlines and elastic this week though, so I'm getting used to it and might have to do a proper hem soon...

Hi! How much fabric did you use?
@SlewLiving3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I think I bought 1m of the merino jersey but it wasn't very wide, maybe 120cm width. 1m should be plenty, but you could get away with slightly less depending on your size and also the width 👍

You mentioned that it's easy to copy a pattern like this but only with stretchy fabric? I'm a beginning sewer and want to recreate a blouse I have from Torrid but it is not stretchy. Whats the best way to copy the pattern?
@SlewLiving6 ай бұрын
@triciaosborn8093 You can use the same method but it requires greater precision in order to achieve a good final result. Stretch fabrics are generally more forgiving and therefore easier to achieve!

Where i can buy that fabric? Or any sheer lightweight cotton/wool jersey

I purchased mine from The Fabric Store AU

Was the measurement of the neck ribbing same as the neckline? Or did you say 1” smaller? 2” smaller?
@SlewLiving2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the amount of stretch in your fabric but in general when using stretchy T-shirt-like fabrics the neck ribbing can be 1" smaller because it will stretch to fit the curve nicely. If there isn't much stretch in the fabric then it should be the same as the neckline 👍

Hi what kind of thread or machine needle do you use for the fine merino jersey? TIA
@SlewLiving3 жыл бұрын
Hello Pat! I use multi-purpose thread for most of my projects because I like to keep costs down and prevent leftover threads accumulating. For jersey it's important to use a stretch needle (aka ballpoint needle) so that it doesn't poke holes with each stitch, and if it's a fine jersey such as a fine merino jersey I would use a smaller needle size such as 10 or 12. 👌

How many yards of fabric do you use with doing a double layer?
@SlewLiving2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say without knowing the width of your fabric... Generally though, if you are doing 2 layers it would likely take at least twice the length of your torso piece (eg my torso pattern piece length is 50cm so I would need 50 x 2 = 100cm).

How did you do the sleeves though?

Sorry I did miss that! Trace around the sleeve shape just like the bodice.

Aloha Esther... and our favorite Latin lurker, 𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒍., You have the 𝑶𝑵𝑳𝒀 video on long sleeve casual wear I could find. You've done an excellent job with explaining it. * * * I've watched it several times, just to get the idea. Two comments: Please, when you demonstrate sewing things for whoever shows up, please use contrasting fabrics and threads so newbies like myself can follow along [ yes, I used please twice in the same sentence on purpose... ]. All the details you demonstrated were lost in the shadows of using black thread on black fabric. * * * As 𝒗𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒚 noted below, you completely overlooked the sleeves. I conclude that you cut them flat in two pieces rather than on-the-fold. You wrap (and sew) that one piece around the hole in the bodice and place the final closing seam in line with the closing seam of the bodice. The sleeve and the bodice are closed in the same seam [ from the tip of the sleeve to the bottom of the bodice, yes? ] * * * Finally, I have an athletic, long sleeved, under shirt that had elastic around my wrist... it began to shrink and caused me problems getting it on and off. I finally trimmed the cuffs off with pinking shears to keep them from unraveling... a year since the ends were cut off and no problems with unraveling. * * * Again, thank you very much for posting such an informative and entertaining tutorial. * * * "𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐞, 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚; 𝐀𝐥𝐨𝐡𝐚 𝐲'𝐚𝐥𝐥..." * * * Until that time. . .

Thank you for leaving some useful feedback! Yes, I can totally understand a lot of detail is lost when I use dark fabrics and dark threads. I will try to take this into consideration with future tutorials but my personal style leans toward dark colours and I also hate to make garments I will not personally wear (a waste of time and materials! Though if I were to film sewing classes specifically I would most definitely use clear contrasting colours 👍) so no promises 😁 Yes the sleeve instructions you described are correct, you can sew all the way from the hand opening of the sleeve through to the hem of the bodice 👍 I'm glad this tutorial was mostly helpful for you and that the sleeve tip came in handy for altering your own top 😊

You never say how to do the sleeves
@SlewLiving4 жыл бұрын
Yeah sorry about that! Tracing them off is the same process as the bodice, so try to copy the shape from an existing top. Then you can join the sleeve seam first, then attach the sleeve to the bodice, and lastly finish the sleeve hem. To finish the hem you can fold it up around 1" (or however much seam allowance you left) and finish with a zig zag stitch. I left mine raw because I preferred that look!
