Hey All! In this video I show you how to create / back up / copy / restore a full microSD card image. This is especially handy if you are a raspberry pi owner and frequently use RetroPie or Raspbian.
Creating an image of a MicroSD card is an effective way to back up or copy your setup!

Thankyou very Much for your help. I followed your instructions to backup a Rapberry Pie image . I used both programs recommended WIN32 DISK IMAGER to READ and ETCHER to write.... The Backed up image Loaded my Menus but failed to load every game. I thought I had a bad SD CARD, so I purchased a new blank Card. I did the procedure again. Same result!!! So I tried READING with WIN32 DISK IMAGER and WRITING with WIN32 DISK IMAGER (No Etcher) - NOW IT WORKED . (Small Tip: After the backup file is written to your destination drive you must change the name and add the extension " .img " example to example.img in order for the WIN32 DISK IMAGER finds it prior to WRITING it to your new sdCard . Be careful to select the correct destination drive or you might overwrite another drive losoing information. Hope this helps someone.

A mixed review on this. Win 32 Disk Imager installed and worked flawlessly as described. Etcher not so much. It prompts you to install multiple unwanted programs during download, one of which I failed to decline and had to uninstall, and the exe file would not launch. Turns out you don't need it anyway. Disk Imager has a write feature that does the same thing.

My working but dysfunctional card appears as an E: boot and an F: that tells me it needs formatting. I downloaded Balena Etcher program. Tried to go from a 32G micro SD image to a fresh micro SD, but I got the message that the fresh micros SD card was too small. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I tried exactly what you did and I just got Error 5. I tried this about 10 times the error the same. I read somewhere that after the error, if you take out the sdcard and replace it, the error goes away as long as you don't close winm32 Disk Imager. I tried that and it still errored. I was just about to write this after pulling it out and putting it back for the last time when I noticed it had started to read! I am thinking When you put the sdcard in, you have to wait for win10 to let go of it. Going to continue to test this hypothesis!

you did not address what format the sd card needs to be, if a raspberry pi is used does it not require fat 32? and are not most sd cards above 32gb pre-formatted to exfat? does writing the image also automatically change the formatting as well?

Well... The Problem is -> Raspberry Systems actually have 2+ partitions and Win32 Disk Imager can only read "mounted" partitions but NOT the whole SD-Card like Linux's DD can do... So sadly it's useless in most cases if you wanna "Backup or Clone" the whole System!

So I have found. Its doing my head in. I have cloned the system config, it even recognises some of my save files. Yet, there are a ton of missing systems such as snes megadrive and so on. The games drive shows up on my pc, but it is effectively useless. I can't add games as there is effectively no space, but it is effectively dead space because whatever is there doesn't show when i put that sd in super console x pro.

I was told that when writing an image to a sd card, the new card takes on the size of the master sd card. I used diskimage to get the sd card back to 16gb - ok - and wrote the image again - - back to 8gb size. Question - how do you write a 8gb image to a 16gb sized card and maintain the card size? Bob S

i have android sdk my issue was the generated sd card image kept getting corrupted when it made an VR SD image in turn making it impossible to mount it as VR drive on windows 11 to pull apps or made emulated info or files, from the vr drive vr os of an emulated android to windows 11. meaning after copying a real sd card i baked up with the first app i linked the sd card image to the vr emulated android studio app in advanced settings all to counter the corruption error. i figure to figure out a work around basically, allowing me to push pull and push pull both ways of a emulated device and all it took was the first app you mentioned copy paste from an vr emulated sd card saved me after pointing to the link in advance settings making my image access able by emulated android so it can be edited like a real sd card then i un-mount it in the main app and mount it with windows 10-11 or demon mount tools and can copy content out of the device XD in a long winded nut shell that app saved me headaches.

@shanefrench3447

Yes, you need to format an SD card to FAT32 if it has a capacity greater than 32 GB before installing it on a Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi's bootloader, which is built into the GPU, can only read from FAT file systems, including FAT16 and FAT32, but it cannot boot from an exFAT file system. FAT32 has better compatibility than exFAT, and most devices, including Raspberry Pi, do not recognize hard drives formatted to exFAT
