I've always thought when it comes to technical sports (snowboarding, dirt biking, skateboarding), women are the best teachers. They always work harder and break down the fundamentals much better than dudes. Awesome video. Keep it up.

I did some trail riding in the National Forest today and had a tough time making the transitions from mud to whoops to banked corners. Anything that wasn’t mud was sandy. It was all single track with lots of trees on either side. I’m new to dirt bikes.

You do a great job explaining what you're doing. I used to like sliding corners on flat ground, (like the flat tracker bikes). It's great practice for body position and controlling the slide with the handlebars. Especially when you get good at it and you can do it while you still have both feet on the pegs. I have never been great at hitting those skinny rut berms like you were doing there.

I'm just an amateur rider, so please forgive my ignorance. I've seen a lot of other videos that tell you to NOT weight the front end while riding in sand. They claim that weighting the front will cause it to dig into the sand and possibly tuck. This is contrary to most other terrain where weighting the front adds grip and keeps it from washing out. Which is correct and in which situation?
@RodNeufeld4 жыл бұрын
I am not a fantastic rider but i have ridden that track a time or two and I find for myself everything Megs says is absolutely true but I find that in the sand if I position myself just a little past mid-seat rather than right up to the tank. That being said my bike is a lot bigger and heavier than hers so I find it tends to wash a little more quickly when I weight the front wheel. Can't stress being on the gas in sand all the time enough in the sand. It sounds weird and until you get it it feels weird.
@dawn-moon4 жыл бұрын
On big adventure bikes with a lot of weight already towards the front wheel, I wouldn't try to jump on the tank ( mostly it's too big anyways ). But on a dirtbike, if you keep accelerating, it's not an issue.

Lean the bike and not your upper body. Press on the outside foot peg when accelerating out. Keep your head over the handlebars. Be smooth with the brakes and gas. With the tall bikes today, they are all looking for the berm. :)

Nice. But what are you doing with the clutch as your Corning?
@artfulalias39844 жыл бұрын
Feathering the clutch instead of rolling off the throttle. Smooths out power delivery and engine braking. Keeps the chassis settled. Improves traction. Keeps the motor in the power band.

Happy Friday dirty bikers , Meg I always enjoy your videos but I Always wanted to ask, whats up with the sleeves rolled up, no matter what the weather or amounts of thorn filled brush you are riding through? As for instructional advice, I gotta believe road rash (Or should I call it Trail rash) can't help you focus on executing proper riding techniques.
@megs_braap4 жыл бұрын
2Cyclecycles JMS1 Thanks for the kind words! I roll my sleeves up because I run really hot and for whatever reason, I feel like having my arms exposed helps cool me down. Sleeves feel hot and distracting and I’m not usually too worried about a scratch or two from brush etc.

You never discuss exactly how to use clutch in corner. Sounds like you used throttle throughout. Guess I’ll go try it myself.
@EarthSurferUSA4 жыл бұрын
Yep. You get on the throttle, and feed the power to the ground with the clutch. To get good at it, (and to force you into faster corner speed, or you bog), practice it in a gear higher than you normally would, and use the clutch so it does not bog coming out of the corner. A 125 racer on a sand track will have the throttle wide open when feeding the power with the clutch, for one example. A good 250 rider will too. :)
@take5th4 жыл бұрын
@@EarthSurferUSA Thanks! Riding a drz400 after 45 years of non-riding. Back in the day it was 250 2-strokes, with 3-5 inches of suspension. So getting used to height, spring, weight, engine brake, torque, etc. of "modern" bike has been a challenge but I am getting there. I'll try the technique, instead of throttle, in 4th on sandy surface.

She says to use the friction zone of the clutch as a (more linear) speed variator rather than yoyo-ing the throttle. Finding that friction zone on demand and thinking correctly (pulling in meas les go, releasing measn more go) when you are trying to hang on and not fall over, is tricky.
