On some M54 engines, the oil dipstick tube is not always 100% correctly indexed into the block, which can give a slightly erroneous reading. On RWD cars, add seven quarts from empty, let it run for a few minutes, shut it down, let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes,then check the oil level. Wherever the level is on the stick at this point, is the correct "FULL" mark for your engine.

When I first got my e34 I was forced to drive it before doing an oil change. When I got to school my teacher loved the car and checked the oil and the stick was bone dry.

After an oil change my n62b48 dipstick is smack dead center in the middle of the min and full mark. It worried me so i added more oil until the fullmark and now the oil level sensor says car has too much oil. Should i be worried or not?

I would say (not pre 2013) pre n52 /2006 or so (+/-) depending on the vehicle. My wife's 2008 e91 with N52 no dip stick.............It sucks.........It is in the electronics - check control in the instrument cluster display.........I do not trust it. I would rather have the good old fashion dip stick any day. You are 100% correct that you need 7 qts or tad more to do an oil change and filter on the inline sixes for the last 20 years or so to get to the full line.

I was reading that some of the euro models didnt get the change until later , but no one seems to know for sure what year none had the dipsticks, i might try to edit the video so 100 people dont make the same statement lol

BMW in the European market "strips down" some of their vehicles...........The same is probably true for Africa, Central and South America. There may be new BMers with dipsticks. All that know, is my wife's 2008 e91 does not - that has N52 in it. That engine rolled out here in the states in 2006. Again I hate not having a dipstick. I like old school. The check control sometimes will not give a reading even after 2 minutes. Less is more.

Wow. Deleting the dipstick is a real 'dipstick' move (as in Enos of 'Dukes of Hazzard' renown). Damned BMWs are more computer than car. They must have defined the love/hate relationship. Well, if your oil level sensor goes out, you HAVE TO get it replaced. Can you imagine running low on oil and having ZERO idea what your actual oil level is? Goodbye motor.

Brother i know its probably obvious, but i have a 740il with the whole AC Schitzer body kit ( so it looks sporty as hell), thing is i have SLS in the back, and i lowered the front. Should i raise the front on a jack till the car is leveled, or can i just mesure the oil like that?

Nope. The engine mounts take care of that. Otherwise it would run dry while you're driving down the road

Well I have a e39 520d and manual says it takes 5l of oil and I added 6.5 l and the level just hits the low mark any Ideas?, last oil change I added 6l to reach max.

Does anyone know if the dipsticks are color coded for different engines? Just purchased a 2004 X5 2.2I & changed the oil/filter. put 8qts of Mobile 1 in it & level doesn't show on the stick. Put in another Qt & still not up to "full" level. Wondering if someone replaced with another, shorter stick.

It's a wet sump oil pan so You Must Check When Car is Off! You will cause a massive vacuum leak if it's still on

I have the same issue. I've been thinking about applying some oil to the O rings. That *should* fix the problem.......I would think.....

I changed orings every 10 years. Compression must be protected by this way.

It should be done when its cold or after the engine has been off for more than 30 minutes

You can use the lucas additive and it shouldnt hurt anything
