Anybody who says that it’s crap is just bad. I don’t normally say that, but the Flamethrower is Halo 3’s most comically lethal CQC weapon. Frankly it’s borderline overpowered and on the single map it’s featured on it’s objectively overpowered. Longer range than the shotgun, capable of killing multiple enemies faster than either of the melee choices, a third person camera for corner checking and the only negative is slower movement. Seriously if you have it and your enemy is carrying anything less than a rocket launcher, they’re fucked. Even a glancing hit is enough to doom a player and god help the enemy team if they clump up.
