Laura, I ordered a foam core board and used it under a corset cake I made this weekend. I used your methods shown here and it turned out so great! I just wanted to say thanks for all the tutorials you've made. You are a inspiration to many and I wanted to let you know that you are appreciated. I know you are busy and can't do all that we beg for (LOL) but I am grateful! Thanks again and I pray you continue to have success in everything.

Thanks! Glad you liked it! :) I usually cover the board just about an hour or so before I start decorating my cake. I remember covering cakes with fondant was the most challenging thing for me to learn as well. I actually learned by watching videos here on KZbin. There are many many great videos already posted on youtube that help tackle the problem. :)

That is SO AWESOME!!! You have no idea how gratifying it is to here you say that!!! I'm so glad that you liked the method and I'm sure your cake came out awesome! I will be adding custom foam core boards to my store and will be taking custom orders so if you ever need an odd shape or just a regular shape foam core board, let me know! Yay! Your comment made my day! THANK YOU! :)

Not a stupid question at all. Mainly the reason we cover boards with fondant is for the "look" of it. Covering it with fondant makes it more uniform with the cake. The decor matches. In my opinion, it's more appealing to the eye than just covering it with paper or aluminum or colored foil. You don't have to cover it with fondant, it's just a preference for some decorators like myself. :)

You're very welcome! I'm glad you liked this tutorial! Sometimes I'll cut a circle in the fondant after I put it on the board just so I don't waste fondant. The one in this tutorial was a pretty small board so that's why I didn't cut out the circle. But if the cake going on the board is 10" or bigger, then I'll put a cardboard cake board the same size as the cake and mark it and cut it out with my pizza cutter. In some of my videos you see the large hole in the fondant. Hope this helps! :)

Thank you! Glad you liked it! I like to use the impression mat after I put the fondant on the board. If you are going to use an impression mat, then I would roll the fondant out just a tad bit thicker. Once the fondant is on the board, I make the impression before cutting the excess fondant off as the impression mat will spread the fondant out somewhat. Once the impression is there, then I cut off the excess fondant on the edges. Hope this helps! :)

You're welcome Clara. Usually I either pipe a little bit of buttercream or royal icing. Whichever I have handy. It helps to make it sticky between the cake board and presentation board. Don't ever completely depend on the icing though to KEEP the cake on the board. This is why we use a sharpened wooden dowel through the entire cake to go INTO the foam core board. :)

Hi Lyn! Today I had to go check my ribbon in my studio because I started doubting myself. Good thing I did! I don't know WHY I thought the ribbon was exactly 0.5", but it's NOT. LOL. It IS 5/8". So sorry for giving you the wrong size. I guess I thought it was 0.5" cuz it always fits perfectly on my board. I realized after covering a board today that the reason it fits perfectly is because once I add the fondant, the heigh of it turns out to be 5/8". Sorry to have misinformed you. :) 5/8" it is.

@krazykoolcakes
@krazykoolcakes 11 жыл бұрын
If they're already covered in aluminum you won't be able to stick fondant to them, but I suppose if you can cleanly remove the aluminum it might work, but ONLY if they are made of foam core. If it's cardboard, it won't work.

My husband is a cabinet maker and doesn't think you can get a perfect circle with the scroll saw. I saw you said you had a video but I am not seeing it. I would like to see it being done before I start WWIII :) I like to be right ya know! LOL Even when I am wrong I like to think I am right! My assumption is you trace a cake board on the foam first then saw away! I think with a steady hand and slow speed it can be done quite nicely. *please oh please say I'm right* ;)

Hi Laura! Thanks so much for all your great tutorials. I am doing my first large cake (for about 180 people...it's large for me haha). I was worried about the weight and I couldn't find a large enough foam core board, so I bought Masonite. Do you think the same technique would work on Masonite? Thanks again for your willingness to coach on these techniques! Kristin
@krazykoolcakes

Hi Kristin! You're very welcome. When I make large cakes such as that one, I just double up on the foam core by gluing to of them together. Works like a charm. To be honest with you, I've never used Masonite before, but from what I know about the material, it's pretty sturdy, however, I just don't know how thick it is. :)
