Is there really any benefit to writing down the main idea of every paragraph in the passage? i don't really understand how it helps

The point I am trying to make is that after reading a paragraph, you may write 1-2 words on the side (describing the main theme). (Just for yourself) This will help you connect the main ideas between the paragraphs. And for the meaning part (later on), you will know the main idea of the entire paragraph when you are trying to deduce the “contextual meaning”. It is optional. I hope it helps.

Opinions are easy. For example, if the writer says, "it's boring how people go to supermarkets only" (just an example) then it's an opinion. How? Well the writer is saying "boring" and other people might not find it boring, hence it's HIS opinion. Others include if the writer says "amazing, incredible, or bad" from his own perspective, then it's his opinion. Hope this helps :)
