Its been a long time since I have had a taste of the meat and water. I remember the first time as a kid underestimating the mighty coconut's hard shell. Hours went into trying to crack the bugger open. And when I did, like in the Movie Cast Away, it broke in two and all that precious water came out. Tears were shed, never knowing that you could actually eat the meat or gut. It was sweet and delectable. And worth the battle!

My family owns a coconut farm. So, the sight of a man opening a coconut head with a screw and hammer is rather awkward as well as entertaining to me. All you do is, hit it hard with a flat bar once and it will open instantly. The juice is saved by using a container or a bucket underneath.
@lightmobile9 жыл бұрын
+Edward Ladrera make a video!!!
@ferdzbags9 жыл бұрын
+Edward Ladrera I agree. When it's to harvest coconuts for copra, we usually gather thousands of them. And you don't use a screwdriver and hammer to open them (it's cumbersome and time consuming). Locals used an angle bar (steel) or a bolo to crack open a coconut shell. That way, it's possible to open a hundred coconut shells in just an hour.
@juliejames63227 жыл бұрын
the point of this video, as he stated, was to open it with common implements folks have in their homes. Most people dont have an angle bar or bolo handy, but almost every home has a hammer and screwdriver.

Be careful with your screwdriver, if it's bad quality the metallic paint can come off and go in the juice inside. Also instead of hammer it around the perimeter crap just put it in a plastic supermarket bag and smash it on some concrete outside a few times. Put 2 bags on it for extra safety.

Brilliant! Like the way the water is first drained out. In India traditionally we just whack the coconut on a hard surface like the edge of a rock and go around the equator of the coconut and when a crack opens up, drain the water and the a final whack and it is opens in halves. Your method is more contained and civilsed....

This worked for me, thanks! I would, however, advise covering your hand with a glove or towel during hammering - the shell can pinch your skin as it briefly cracks opens wide then closes. And it can take a lot of force to start the hairline crack; it's easier after you've begun the crack.
@eliekheder10 жыл бұрын
Sorry no big deal about cracking the coconut it self . It would be a great deal to show how easy to get the gut out.
@BradsGreenhouse10 жыл бұрын
elie kheder haha very true!
@LeezaCD10 жыл бұрын
You can remove the gut by burning the outside of the coconut with real fire before cracking it open. I use the wine cork remover as a tool, and poke the hole through the softest part of the crown, and use my corkscrew handle to hold the coconut to rotisserie it over the fire on the gas stovetop. That way I don't burn myself (the coconut will get hot), as well as I can control how much the coconut burns. The more you char the outside of the coconut, the easier the gut will come out. If you have an electric stovetop as many do nowadays, if you get a pan and put some matchsticks in the middle of it, and slowly add matches, it will do the job. It doesn't need a big fire to do this at all. Even a lighter can do the job...albeit very slowly. Please be careful not to burn down the house using this technique. :) Source of this info: my Brazilian native mother
@yopatao9 жыл бұрын
An easy way to remove the flesh is to put the coconut halves into a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes. Then take them out and when they are cool enough to handle use a dull bladed knife to carefully work in between the flesh and the shell. Keep moving the blade around and deeper until the flesh pops out in one piece (usually). Once you've got flesh out of the shell use a vegetable peeler to peel off the brown skin that's stuck on the side where the shell was and then you'll be left a big hunk of coconut to do whatever you want with. Ez done!
@eliekheder9 жыл бұрын
