Man, your teaching style is incomparable! When you are A/B ing with and without effects you give us time to listen and concentrate on the subtle, and not so subtle, differences. You show us multiple effects, adding and subtracting them one at a time, leaving us plenty of room (time) to soak it in. You never seem to be hurrying through your tutorials. Your spoken word is very clear and concise. I've been doing music for more than 60 years and recording since the early 1960s. Even so, there is still SOOO much I still don't know. And even if I DO know something you're explaining, it's still very helpful to be reminded and refreshed on the various techniques that are available to us. ***** In the 2nd option you just switched the PAN of the Rverb´s -80 and 1 in Center, I don´t use ProTools and wondered if I´m right that the "Stereo Combined Panner" in Cubase has the same function then your 2 stereo Pan´s? (Gives you two Balance panners in the space of one, so that you can control the panning for each side of a stereo signal separately)

These techniques are pretty amazing - I've been experimenting with them and some variations after watching this... It's really amazing when used on electronic drum kits. I've recorded on a Yamaha kit and exported the drums individually into the DAW - using these techniques plus some saturation/compression can create a very believable sounding "drum room" that never actually existed. Thanks once again David - your the bomb!

Nice trick about limiting the reverbs. I loved the depth of the bass drum on the Rverb+L1 configuration, very nasty. Not sure how this would work in a heavier drum section, but for the upbeat pattern it's killer cause the bass breathes

You can create a room effect too with recording your drum tracks via your monitor with 2 different mic placed at different places in a room. An important thing is the gestion of the phase... I like your channel... ❤ qualitative Content 👍👍👍... greets from belgium 🇧🇪

Great stuff !!!!!! I did a snare trick with a gated reverb on the left, and loooooong reverb on the right, enough pre-delay to keep the snap, and it’s AWESOME The whole snare explodes and then travels left to right across the speakers (don’t worry it’s subtle) made the song !!!!!!

you can add more dirt to the ER L1s by turning the release time to 0. longer release (20-50) will make it smoother also could turn on one of the analog modes in H-delay... or use delays with even more colors like echoboy i would also bus the dry/wet to something to glue em together like NLS, scheps73, particles, vitamin or so

I was wondering if the first trick could sound more natural if you pass both short delays thru the reverb. I think it could blend them better... Of course it all depends on what material you're crafting on, but generally, I prefer the second trick. But both are perfectly usable. Thank you very much.!

Another great video that makes me want to go away and try it out. Using the dual limiters to crunch the sh*t out of the ER's, is bloody inspired; you can hear such a difference, but I also like the way this technique allows you to play with image. Great stuff

Thx for this tutorial! While watching I tried this out on the stereo track of some programmed sampled drums with Groove Agent (Cubase), as in 'not a real drummer'. This really works and adds a 'live-feel' to the track. Didn't find this technique anywhere else. Great Job!!!

awesome tricks david! sometimes overhead recordings are shit these days, and tricks like these are beautiful, will try to implement the second one into my template, in reaper we can do this all on one channel which makes it much easier to handle EDIT: just came back with the biggest drum sound i ever heard =D i got a send channel now, where i got a Pro Q that gets rid of harshness and low end before the reverbs, got ValhallaVintageVerb with Bright Hall left and Dirty Hall right, then an instance of bx control, narrowing the stereo field to 19% for beautiful phase cancellation and depth, afterwards smashing it with waves api 2500 in unlinked mode. then the softube FET compressor to make it even fatter, and then, another instance of bx control with the width knob at 136%, making the channel wider again, which makes this approach even much better!! i got so much control over the fatness with the compressors, and amazing control of depth with just the two width knobs! this will stay in my template fore... very long time!

At first congratulation for your videos. They are great! And then i would like to ask a piece of advice from you. I need to bounce stems for master, but i use an outboard reverb which contains ducking in its setup . Can you please tell me how i should route the tracks if i want to feed the reverb with all the necessary tracks (used in the mix) to make them "duck" each other, but i would like the stereo stem contain only the useful data. For example: i use the same reverb for vocals and guitars, but when i bounce the guitar stem i do not need audible vocal, only the guitars and their reverb, but i do need the vocal to duck the reverb of the guitars. Is it possible to do in Pro Tools? Or is there any other way to do it?! Maybe to bounce the "ducked" reverbs only in a separate stem? Does it make any sense? If it does, how could i make it done? Thanks in advance, Gy

+MixbusTV Hi there, Thanks for the quick response, you are great. Yes, it absolutely does. The principle was clear, the "how" was the question. :) Thanks for your help! So this is the addendum to your description to make it totally clear for all the ones who has the same problem bouncing stems with one "ducked reverb" on more different stems. If we mute the channel in mix window only, the dry signal disappears but the reverberated signal remains. It might not enough for us if we had the same reverb on guitars and vocals for example, because the mastering guy needs separate vocal and guitar stems. So the solution is simple: we need to open the send bus windows of the tracks we dont want to hear in the bounced stem and mute them, because we need the signals of them only to "duck" the reverb, we don't need their actual sound in the stem. I thought i just write down my experience here, because it differs from the way you do it in Cubase.

Thanks so much for your videos, I've watched this video so many times and am about to try this on a kit I recorded in a small, ex-bomb shelter. Regarding the snare, should I add a separate reverb on it (before what you've explained here) to lengthen the it's tail a bit? If so, what kind of reverb should I be using in accordance with this technique so that they don't clash? Could I also send other instruments (guitars, bass, vox) to the ER and Main Room channels to give a sense that they were all recorded in the same room, when they may not have been? The vox were done somewhere else, and the bass was DI only.

Great tutotial again. A little off topic but when I automate certain parameters like reverb size....perhaps to create a big room sound in a breakdown....the 'size' automation is not being read properly by Cubase...like it's too confusing to make such parameter moves to run smoothly. Yet... it sounds smooth if I slide the dial up throughout the course of the automation. I thought it might be a bug with the reverb plugins but from my understanding this is quite common? Appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks

MixbusTV Cheers mate. But this is happening with many reverb plugs...Valhalla...even Cubase stock reverbs etc. I even opened up a blank project and imported a drum loop audio file and it's still happening. The only workaround is to have 3 instances of the same reverb and change the room size on the busses....and automate the send level. A complete pain though in terms of workflow. I really like to automate the drum room size for my breakdowns. Thanks for your input anyways :)

Love your videos, this trick is also nice, but I can't agree that you are changing stereo field only by "eq and phase". It's normal panning! just because you are cutting half of an energy by EQ, means that automatically strip is quieter, and it's panned 80%, so ofc that you are changing panning :P cheers from Poland and thx for making this semi-advanced tuts, that what I was looking for! +MixbusTV In that case, if a work where this advice is followed is heard on a monophonic radio, as is often the case, the mix will be incorrect. Commercial releases are made to be mono-compatible for this reason.

+MixbusTV I actually use a plugin to convert to mono, and always notice how difficult it is to stop a decent stereo mix from collapsing and sounding hollow when it's switched in. I've found it best to only put non-essential sounds further out towards the edges of the stage just to provide some width.

Waves mastering plugins are decent.... I also like using T-Racks and Sonnox Oxford. Nice sound, mayne! so many ways to beef up the drum mix.. even using a Pulteq EQ emulator and SoftTube's FET compressor

Isn't the panning wrong here? The raw drums are in drummers perspective but the ER are in viewers perspective. The ER L is panned +80 and the ER R is panned -80.
