We use a “profit first” style percentage based budget…even line item is exhausting. We have four (technically five) categories. 1. Missions 10% 2. Personnel 45-55% 3. Ministries 15-20% 4. Facilities 15-20% 5. Savings 5-10% I tweak, cut, and move things until we get to “100%”. If there are categories that need to be further broken down, you could go line item, or a percentage of the percentage going to that category…but we find that these four (five) pools of money keep things operating and within budget. That's a pretty smart way to go about it! It's probably easier than trying to wrangle dollar amounts until you hit your predicted amount.
