In this video, we take a look at creating a custom rust effect with streaks. The effect will be driven by a brush stroke as input.
*IMPORTANT: Substance Painter 8.1 and higher have an issue with Slope Blur Filter. Please use the version in the project files. Replace the slope_blur.sbsar file located in the install directory with the version in the project files.

@@wes.mcdermott "I think you are looking at some tips for smart materials and masks that can be reused?" Exactly. Sometimes you save smart materials etc. but then they don't behave as they should. It would be nice to analyze further the aspect you mentioned in the answer. For example in this tutorial you touch the subject quickly (creation of smart maps) but more in-depth and wide-ranging tutorials would offer more interesting answers!! Thanks again for the work you do and I hope one day I can attend some conferences etc. :)

Hey Wes, thanks for the great substance painter content! Is there a way to use normal map info to produce ambient occlusion channels for masking? Im trying to add a normal map to a metal floor but I would like to add dust based on the risen/sunken areas of the normal map.
@wes.mcdermott
@wes.mcdermott Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good idea. Sometimes I will add an anchor point on the layer that contains the normal data. Then in another layer mask, I will grab that Anchor, set it to normal channel and use levels on the blue channel. This is the Z channel and help in making masks. You might need to invert this channel to get the occlusion.

I love all your tutorials. One thing though. The intro material looks spot on. However, the one created in the tutorial itself, the final output seems that the rust is floating. It's like its above the geometry instead of below. Can you create a quick video on how you fix that? thanks so much.
@wes.mcdermott
@wes.mcdermott Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I was thinking that as well. The issue is just in the tweaking of some of the blur and levels filters. For the video, I was trying to be more streamlined and didn't spend all the time finessing the settings. Please take a look at the project file as I made that result better.

Hey Wes, how do I stop an invisible border from cutting off the rust slope effect? when I paint in a certain area it works fine, and another area the effect completely cuts off. I am using a Preview Sphere sample, if it could have anything to do with that. Thanks for the tutorial by the way.
@wes.mcdermott
@wes.mcdermott Ай бұрын
Thanks much! I am wondering if the cutoff is related to UV seams. On the sample sphere, there are UV seams and that can break the displacement. In cases like that, I try to avoid painting the displacement right on the UV seam. I have another trick in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH7XqGNreM9knac&lc=UgyAlrHYO5H2ln47fHt4AaABAg where I show how to blur the height. It would help in cases where the displacement is hitting right on the UV seams.

The brush I used ships with Painter and is called Kyle's Inkbox - Chopped. I made a few tweaks to the brush parameters and that brush was used to paint in the mask that drives this smart material.

I'm sorry, but where's the version of blur slope in Project Files? What I have in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Substance 3D Painter esources\starter_assets\effects\Standard is limited by intensity of 1

OH! I am so sorry I forgot to put the actual link in the description. I updated the description now. Here is the link: www.dropbox.com/s/vto69o1lpenqhfa/rust_effect.zip?dl=0 When you open the zip, you will see the blur_slope.sbsar. You can replace it in the location here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Substance 3D Painter esources\starter_assets\effects\Standard
