Good advise and info. Another thing that can affect salinity imo is wet skimming. If you are skimming really wet, the ato is kicking on more often and diluting the tanks salinity. I've seen it happen a few times. Just keep an eye on conductivity if skimming wet Fritz is an awesome salt and mixes super clean with out the left over residue.

Great content here. For temperature, you can get a simple $30 controller, if you are just starting out and dont have an apex.

No one should be put through the pain of using a hydrometer. Had one back in the day(12 years ago)and hated it. Just got back in and went with the Milwaukee and love. People take Travis’ advise get a digital salinity meter. Super accurate, quick and easy to calibrate.
@FishOfHex6 жыл бұрын
Im still not sure why they even make them at this point
@mc3newsmcocconcierge5045 жыл бұрын
So tired of messing with my refractometer. Getting the temperature of the calibration fluid identical to my water is such a pain. Definitely going to get a Milwaukee.

Awesome video. I am finishing up cycling now and am debating how to maintain calcium and alkalinity. I am leaning towards kalk just because it's easy. I am just eventually going to do soft corals and maybe some lps. Are there any pitfalls I should look out for?

would a alkatronic with the new dosetronic be better than a calcium reactor with controller for best stable alk/calcium
@alierriveronunez69326 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a question. I saw your last video and you repeated it again, why would I dose equal parts of calc and alk if I have the calcium too high( because I dosed too much) and the alk is in the “right” level and I can see the fluctuations on the alk and the calc is coming down without dosing it, and doing water changes. I have a mix reef and I’m using two parts, my levels are: Calc-540 Kh-9.2 Thanks an advanced. By the way I’m loving your videos.

Is that a spotted yellow eye tang in this tank that I see and one of many reasons I am in this hobby due to some corals and fish that i fell in love with when I first saw them. Also what would you suggest a rimless or traditional tank?? I am planning on upgrading to 180G and wanted your opinion as I am planning to order from Custom Aquariums after seeing that you are using their tank as well.

I have a problem my alkalinity is at 8.5 with a hanna checker. Every week it drops to 5.5. My calcium starts at 500 and at the end of the week is only 478. Hiw can I get it right so I can dose equal? I have a 180 and do a 30 to 50 gallon water change a week trying to reset it to balance and it's been 3 months still the same. Tank is over a year and I use reef crystals

Where do we get our corals from? What parts of the world? Which vendor or aquarist sources? Why do we not see corals from the Caribbean and from around various islands? If away on vacation and scuba diving are there sources to contact to bring corals out of those islands and countries and into the US? With the coral reef problems that are going on, is there a way for hobbyists to get corals back into wild to repopulate and strengthen reefs?

@MikeLemming6 жыл бұрын
Great info Trav! With the Apex, do you still keep your heaters on high and let the controller do the rest? Reason I ask is that Neptune’s has a video saying to keep it only 1 degree higher then whatever you set it at.. thanks bro
@FishOfHex6 жыл бұрын
My current heaters do not have a temp control they are simply on or off via the apex
@MikeLemming6 жыл бұрын
Oh ok.. I just picked up a new heater. When I set it up to the apex, do you suggest keeping it all the way up like you did on my old tank?
@FishOfHex6 жыл бұрын
just set it to 81 you should be fine the apex will do the rest

@@FishOfHex Yea mine is a dick too! Hardly ever eats any hair algae - which is the reason I got him. And recently I got a long nose butterfly fish - the yellow tang kept him into a corner for 3 days. Sad to say, he didnt make it. And I didnt have a quarantine tank :(

Yes without sand I also run a bare bottom lawn The point is its my reef tank And yes really :)
@johnkoutsantonis71876 жыл бұрын
for people without an Apex, you can get a heater controller , like inkbird for 20-50 dollars , , i would never run a reef tank without one.
