the pattern on the wood is cool!

Yeah I really like it, have to find more firewood to mill up.

Looks really nice from that single piece all foiled out. I can see many variations in your future. If you can find timber with some natural damage it can look really nice. I've made a desk a while ago by filling in termite tunnels in a piece of timber with red and orange epoxy then cutting it back and exposing it. Finished it by burning it with a blow torch and heat gun. 🔥

I actually have a couple of projects planed that are similar to that! One is using branches from a tree that fell. I'd love to get some drift wood with all kinds of holes in it but I think you need a license to collect it. Your desk sounds pretty awesome, adding resin and burning the wood probably looks so cool!

Awesome as usual. Great idea. I like the something from “nothing “ and the editing is solid

Once I started milling my own boards it got pretty addictive. I fixed up an old bandsaw that's made it way more fun. Problem is now I have all kinds of small logs everywhere 😂

Matt come on down to my place, there is pine EVERYWHERE on the ground and some oak too.
@WaveWasters2 жыл бұрын
@@keatingcustomsurfboards185 I picked up a bunch of oak from a broken table and chairs, but more would be great. I do wonder if oak would make fins too stiff, have you tried it?
@keatingcustomsurfboards1852 жыл бұрын
@@WaveWasters No I am just using my "off cuts" to make fiberglass panels currently. I have not tried the wood fins yet.

@@keatingcustomsurfboards185 awesome! Do you use the really small scraps in the fins or just the bigger parts?

Do you have a video that explains your jig for this fin base? I am sitting in triple digit Florida heat watching your test drive videos. I am freezing just watching.

What I did was mill out the fin tab shape out of a thick sheet of HDPE. I don't have a video on it, I've thought about making one but the more of these I've made. The more I've realized its more complex to do safely then it looks. If you have access to a cnc or know someone with one that's the best way to go about making one. Luckily our water is slowly warming up for summer, I think the surface is around a toasty 57f. just have to hope the wind doesn't push it offshore again haha

What type of material is mold for the fin tab? Or is it a big block or PE plastic? I once made on of wood and tried to work with a surfacing agent that wouldn't stick but yea.. That didn't work hehe.
@WaveWasters2 жыл бұрын
Yeah its a block of plastic(HDPE), that I routed a slot into. You can use other plastics as well or aluminum. I've used various types of plastic for casting epoxy for years. Some types work better than others. Big thing is you want to use a release agent and have a fairly smooth mold surface. Other wise your resin will bond to the mold, and your going to have a bad time hahaha.

Why do you add a fin tab and not shape out of wood and wrap it with the glass?
@WaveWasters10 ай бұрын
The tab is warped in glass but the part that sticks out on the end would be too weak to just be wood wrapped in glass. Adding more fiberglass there makes it stronger. Also when you drill the hole for the screw it's water proof. Where if it was a wood core you would need to water proof it again.

How thick do you have your fin panel?
@WaveWasters Жыл бұрын
This panel was around 9mm if I'm remembering correctly.
