Excellent stuff: My favorite statement: "What sounds good at home isn't necessarily what works well on stage" - couldn't agree more!

I just gave my Roland RD1000 away as my wife and I are moving into an apartment and no longer have room for it. Still a pretty amazing action for something over 30 years old. Cool looking stand as well but as you said, that thing weighs a ton.

Sad to hear! I don’t know what I’d do without mine. I found it in Nashville in mint condition. And got it for $450. I use all the equipment he’s speaking about for the Elton live piano sound. I have plenty of videos using it. But I hope you got some enjoyment out of your RD-1000. Mine will not be departing from me!

Elton’s mix is is predominantly the Piano 1 voice from the Roland MKS rack Mount which he plays via MIDI from the acoustic grand. He also layers it with I believe the Power Grand voice from the Yamaha Motiff rack Mount he also plays via MIDI through the acoustic grand. And last but not least the actual acoustic grand is also heavily miked inside to give it some “color” so to speak. The

Excellent video- very useful info...and so well presented. - Simple answer - Just get a Yamaha Grand piano patch......layer with some pads, and a touch of electric piano.

Does it work on Dexibell VIVO S8M or Roland RD2000?

Great vid, I was wondering if maybe you could set up that massive beast on the side there and show that thing off. It is such an iconic stage piano.

Make a standard piano sound bigger than it should be. I like it! The Roland JV-80 piano sound also works great for it.

Hi there, could you recommend how to achieve this Elton sound with the Yamaha CP88? I’m struggling! Thanks!
@jaggass Жыл бұрын
In the late 90's -early 00's you could really hear the sound of his Yamaha grand piano at times if they're was midi latency or depending on the mix that show. He also uses a Yamaha Motif rack for piano sounds too.

Hi Tony.. Thank you so much for all the videos you make, it helped me to make the decision to purchase a Nord Piano 5.. I have a huge question about this video.. I do play, "The One" and was wondering what Pad voice you are using.. I do a lot of Elton's music, and love the RD1000 and the Yamaha mix, I will be using that combination a lot with the band.. Thank you again Tony for all the time you spend making these videos...

I just watched Elton John last night at Dodger Stadium here in Los Angeles, his final show in the US. And I was always wondering about his piano tone. It definitely doesn't sound like a 9' Yamaha grand. It sounds like part Yamaha CP electric grand and part Roland RD-1000. I also play a Nord Stage 3, so thanks for this.

This may be a dumb question but I am not skilled when it comes to midi inputs and sounds, but did the Roland Rd-1000 sound come on that, or how were you able to get that sound on that nord? I have a Roland FP-30X that I have been playing with for months trying to get a sound close to Elton’s and I have had no luck

Great video Tony! Just a thought - was not the closest thing to an acoustic in the 80s the somewhat earlier Kurzweil K250? The samples sounded way more like an acoustic than the Roland synthesis. Also if anyone else is interested Elton's first real piano after ceasing to use the RD1000 was/is a real grand which was retrofitted with a Gulbransen MIDI piano system. Thereafter, Yamaha made the bespoke pianos he plays now. But they are all acoustic grands, he just doesn't incorporate more than a small % of the acoustic sound in the overall mix. Shame really as those 9ft Yamahas sound great, but there'd be too much feedback in his monitors.... I guess to truly replicate the EJ sound you also need to run it through a compressor and add some chorus (unless it's the MKS20 chorus they use).

The layering capabilities and ease of use to do this are what the Nord is all about. I just wish my Nord Grand could do the layering like this too, but it cannot. :(

Ick... give me Elton with an analog piano, with deeply resonating, warm piano tones. The modern, tinkly, over-produced sound Elton has created dumbs down his music and sounds like he's playing a Casio keyboard that he bought from K-Mart. I can't imagine why anybody would want to re-create that sound. And if you see Elton, tell him I said so.
