Wow! I am so impressed with the talent, tools and dedication that were used to put this together! I am going to watch the video again but slow it down so I can jot down the steps to make this. I have not seen many professionals back up their products with such detail as this or the instructions that come with his products. I have a few of Artifex Forge's brushes for Affinity the how-to documents that come with them are top notch! I haven't seen that too often. One of the reasons I buy them!

if you're in pixel persona, you can hold down command on mac (I think ctrl on windows? idk) and click on the thumbnail of any layer to set it as a selection for a quick and dirty clipping mask instead of doing all that erasing (and then since the selection is usually a little blocky/shrunken, I usually feather and expand it a bit to smooth out my edges)

Hey Ben, good tip! As I'd already shown how to create a clipping mask earlier in the tutorial, I wanted to show the erase method too.

Just wanted to chime in to say that this tutorial (and similar endeavors) demystify a lot the apps themselves. As a photoshop user and slowly getting into Affinity Photo, I must say that I have started to play with Designer whereas I would never find the motivation/reason to open Illustrator (except for format import/rexport).

I noticed you applying a brush preset with a fixed stroke width and then have to go to the stroke palette repeatedly to reduce the default stroke width. Probably could have saved some time by creating a duplicate of the original brush and adjusting it's default stroke width. However, a much larger thought occurred to me, which has to do with the problem of brush management and the need for the app developers to improve/innovate here. For any specific project, the artist will want to cut through the clutter of all the long lists of brushes, and cultivate a short, project-specific set of brushes. It's possible to do that presently but it requires a lot of clicking and naming. What's called for here is a better brush management feature, and a more direct solution to the problem of moving or copying brushes between sets. Apart from having a Brush Manager window, it would be nice to be able to show two or more brush panels side-by-side and to be able to drag and drop brushes between brush set panels. The objective would be for the app to allow a quick and intuitive way to assemble a short, project specific set of brushes for a more efficient workflow. Also, it would be nice to have the option of having the brush name display in the brush panel without having first to roll over the brush.

Those are great suggestions. Affinity maintains an area of their forum for feature requests: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/53-feedback-for-affinity-designer-on-desktop/

Hey Mark. This is a good idea. For the tutorial though, I wanted to use the brushes as they are to avoid any confusion.

These are great suggestions! Add a ‘size multiplier’ to that panel that receives the drag n dropped brushes (and basically acts as a “Brushes Swatch”), that way a multiplier of 10% (or 0.1) means that all those brushes that are 64 in their original library would be 6.4 when picked on that brush swatch.

Having to break the curve of your window shapes to get the vector brush line to connect is a hack. This ought to be addressed by the app developers. It shouldn't be necessary to break curves to achieve continuous stroke lines.
@CarBenDioxide4 жыл бұрын
THANK you! I've been trying to voice why this is so annoying to me and you hit the nail on the head. It really should just be as easy as a slider in the stroke settings panel
@postmax814 жыл бұрын
You could create brushes that are continuous so they connect seamlessly on closed shapes.
@ArtifexForgeDesignTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Hey @@postmax81 I've created a few of these for other packs but the downside is that they don't have ends. I am considering adding both to some packs where it could come in handy.

@@ArtifexForgeDesignTutorials Yes, having two options is useful to have, for sure.
