The brush in overlay blend mode is real game changer. Thank you so much. I have never been really happy or successful in extracting objects from their background, but now I think I may have a bit more sucess.

The overlay trick at the end is really useful! I've lost count of all the times I've had to manually try to carefully fill in those areas in the past without messing up the edges.

Small tip for the panning with the mouse: you can also hold the middle mouse button. Works with a pen too if you assign it to one of the buttons. Great tip with the overlay blendmode btw. I never would've thought about using that in a mask layer

Thanks for the tip, Michele! Honestly, I don't really use the pen buttons (neither a mouse) but maybe I should haha. Cheers!

I learned from the end of the video regarding overlay to tackle the half transparent pixels on the inside. Is there a similar setting for sharpening the pixels on the outside ? I tried a few combinations and couldn't find one that worked .....
@IAMRENSI5 ай бұрын
Happy to hear that! For the outside is the same technique, but you use black as foreground color! It isn’t really sharpening, but rather better defining the mask. Hope this helps 😊

The overlay trick DOES have one issue, Do not set overlay in your layers panel, it will not work, But set it from above and it works on both sides of the mask by switching colors.
@IAMRENSI5 ай бұрын
Good call! In the layers panel you set the blend mode of the layer. You want to change the blend mode of the brush!

What about mixing two tools, the pen tool and the refine tool. Let’s say you need to cutout a character with bushy hair. The body can be easily cut out with the pen tool, without having to deal with grey borders etc. But the hair needs to be dealt with the Smart Selection tool and the refine tool. I couldn’t figure out how to mix both tools. Is there a way to do it ?

Any chance you can create a folder or link that you could load the images you are using in the video, maybe even the special brushes you use so that we can actually work WITH you while you teach us??? I guarantee you more people would watch and watch longer and probably even multiple times for practice.

The most over-complicated way to remove a background in software I've ever tried. Photoshop 6 could do it easier than this. They really need to redo this because it's a pain.

Selections in Affinity Photo2 is very crude. It lacks key functionality that makes these manual time consuming adjustments necessary. There is also no way to use the other tools temporarily active while in another tool; like when you're using a brush and need to sample a color. In Photo2 you have to exit brush tool and select eyedropper tool sample, then go back to the brush tool. VERY inconvenient and extremely time consuming.
@IAMRENSIАй бұрын
I agree with you that their selections could be improved. However.. You can actually eye drop with the Brush tool active. If you're on a Mac you can hold option and drag to eye drop. No need to blame them, just get to know the software better so you can improve your workflow! 😊
@caspiansfriend29 күн бұрын
Good stuff, but I couldn't listen to you. Not criticizing but you had way too many plosives and hisses and that was killing me. You were even breathing into the mic. I recommend just backing off of the mic to about 4 to 6 inches, assuming you have a condenser mic, and it looks like you do. Sorry, man. Good content, but that's true for about 100 or so other Affinity experts. And if I'm going to spend a lot of time going through step by step the instructions in a video, I have to be able to tolerate their voice, audio editing included. I just could not stay with you as you essentially breathed into my ears. And, again, the plosives! and hissing of several of your s's. Simple fix...back off of the mic... and get a wind guard. Audio is super important! PS: if the "s"s still come through Davinci Resolve's Fairlight tool (audio) has a de-esser filter. Works super well to get rid of the snake like hissing s's.

People, learn to use a pen. You'll make a path in 3 minutes and have a perfectly outlined object. And now, you're agonising over this mask drawing, with these artefacts.... It's pointless.

@@GarviHere Yes, hair and fur with a pen is difficult to separate, but with a brush it is equally difficult. You need completely different tools for that.

Another example of a Clickbait header. Nobody in their videos demonstrates an EASY way to remove the background in a low-detailed photo without difference in depth of field between the background and the main subject. And all of demonstrated techniques are in the official Affinity tutorials.
