For the people who have a problem with expand object and then ungroup in Illustrator 2021, 22 and newer: In 3D materials and effects list are two versions of Extrude & Bevel - right in the list and one in 3D (Classic) section. You need to use Extrude & Bevel (Classic) /in 3D section/ to expand and ungroup. Otherwise you won't be able to ungroup object. First Extrude choice will expand it to picture.

For the drop shadow blend you don't need to do specified steps with a high volume. Turn the shape (any colour but black) into a compound path then choose smooth blend plus unite.

I've just begun using Illustrator today, but coming from a blender background, I thought it was weird that, from a render, you can get extract shapes - you can't in the new extrude & bevel. Here's how to do it in Illustrator 26.0.2: >Create your text >Change color >Add yourself an appearance window Shift+F6 or Window>Appearance >Click fx>3D (Classic)>Extrude & Bevel (Classic) >Choose your desired rotation, tick Preserve Spot Colors, set your lamp where you want >Object>Expand Appearance >Right click and ungroup twice This way illustrator can read the text - I think. Either way it works.

Great tutorial! I love the step by step explaining. Although I did run into one problem. When you added a stroke to the letters the stroke only applied to the edges of the letters. When I apply a stroke to the letters it applys to all the "blend steps" on each letter. When you added the 3D bevel and extrude effect you left the option "Blend steps" at the default 25. How did you get the stroke to not affect the blended steps added from the 3D effect?

Thank you so much for this tutorial I had so much fun creating this minis the shadow part lol for easy way round for shadows I first selected the text then from the second top bar I chose "style" then "drop shadow" and ok .. not a very clean shadow but good enough for a beginner

Once you applied the 3D settings and expanded the appearence can you go back to those 3D settings from the appearence panel and change them? I've looked everywhere and tried everything I could think of. Without applying the expand appearence my 3D seetings are always there in the appearence panel ready to be changed but as soon as I apply the expand appearence option my 3D settings disappear. Can you help me with that? Thank you!
