Great video. Scrims are a must in open sunlight for sure. For those that don't want to spend a lot of money you can DYI a scrim with a fitted crib sheet and some pvc pipe. I have used it with great results. Also you can find solid white beach and patio umbrellas on line for very cheap.

I’ve used a flash, a shoot through umbrella used close just out of frame setup as a reflector umbrella and positioned the umbrella to block the sun. It does a good job of nicely softening the noonday sun.

It's not supposed to look real, if it were we would be happy taking snapshots with our phones. Photography is a creative/artistic hobby, you create your own reality. Also, reality changes a bit when you change to lenses with focal lengths less or greater than around 50mm. Photos stand out when they don't have the look your eye is used to seeing, that's kind of the point.

Great tutorial and I love your enthusiasm! One thing I will like to add is the reason ND filter is used is to avoid HSS altogether, which is at least 2 stops less efficient in flash power. For example, instead of shooting at ISO 64 @ 1/400 @ f/1.8 with the variable ND filter set to about 3 stops, it will be better to shoot at sync speed at ISO 64 @ 1/250 @ f/1.8 with the variable ND filter set to about 3.7 stops. Your flash will thank you for that and you even have sufficient flash reserve to make the ambient light even darker and dramatic if needed. Also, if we look at 6:38 carefully, the photo which was taken with the HSS of 1/3200s without ND filter actually has a darker background (by 1 stop?) which is not a fair comparison. It will be better if the initial photo taken with the ND filter is taken at ISO 64 @ 1/250 @ f/1.8 with the variable ND filter set to about 4.7 stops so that the ambient exposure is the SAME for both photos to compare them properly.

Please make a video on modifier placement (distance, direction and angle). I have a tri-stand since I don't have a person to hold a mono-stand pole for me so i'm kind of limited to placement of the modifier. Hi Sir, thank you for the awesome tutorial! I have a couple of noob question, what is the nd filter is for in this situation? You said that with hss the speedlite is not strong enough so you add nd filter, doesn't nd filter make the image just as dark as hss with high shutter speed? Can I just use hss in this situation and get the same result? Thanks so much.
@924PHOTOGRAPHY
@924PHOTOGRAPHY 6 жыл бұрын
avengedtheater hello, in the video i used HSS and the flash was powerful enough because my shutter speed was to high trying to compensate for the high noon sun. So, we put a ND Filter on so we can lower our shutter speed to a speed where the flash will be able to be powerful enough. If you don’t use a ND filter in these cases you’ll have to go bare on the speedlite. In this video we only had the inner diffuser in and the speedlite still was powerful enough until we brought that shutter speed down. Now, i was still in HSS because i was shooting at 1/320sec and 1/400sec. You can use just HSS but you’ll need a more powerful flash to compensate for the higher shutter speeds.
@NOISREVIEW
@NOISREVIEW 6 жыл бұрын
Keydrin Franklin hey! Thanks for replying! So that means that the ND filter doesn't affect the power of the flash? Im sorry if this is a stupid question, I just bought an affordable godox with hss thinking i wouldn't need an ND filter lol.
@924PHOTOGRAPHY
@924PHOTOGRAPHY 6 жыл бұрын
avengedtheater as long as you’re shooting wide open. That’s like video we used variable Nd filters so that we can shoot wide open with a low shutter speed.

@924PHOTOGRAPHY
@924PHOTOGRAPHY 6 жыл бұрын
James Parish correct. Get my camera settings first keeping your shutter at 1/400 and below then with ND filter on minimal then adjust to get the background right. Start speedlite on full power and work your way down
@jamesparish7234
@jamesparish7234 6 жыл бұрын
I'll try that ...haven't shot portraits with ND filter before...gonna practice this weekend.. I've only used my ND filter for landscape images... Another quetion why 1/400 shutter and not faster...? or is that just a starting point also?
@924PHOTOGRAPHY
@924PHOTOGRAPHY 6 жыл бұрын
James Parish because anything faster the flash wouldn’t have done anything. The speedlite was on full power and about 2ft from subject. Anything more the i would have to raise my iso to 100 then i can raise my shutter speed. It’s just a matter of playing with the triangle
