How To Create BIG Pressure in Side Control as a Small Person in BJJ

Recently 1 of my smaller BJJ students was asking questions about how to add top pressure in Side Control. So, I gave them a few tips that helped them out and I figured I'd share them with you.
As a smaller person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu you can certainly add top pressure. But you've got to me more deliberate than say a 300lbs person who can have sloppy positioning but still feel like a ton of bricks. And the video will give you some ideas on how to do that.
That said, all of the stuff that I talk about in the video is perfectly useable for a bigger person too. They're sound fundamentals. But again, if you want to have strong pressure on top of side control and don't want to get rolled, then they're even more important if you're not a massive person.
Hope the video is useful to you.

Great tip. My coach is always saying "Your weight is a gift from God. Don't be rude and give it to the floor. Give it your opponent."

Can’t wait to try this. Had an older grappler show me the shoulder thing the other day and say that when I bring my weight too far over he can sweep me. it has helped my side control a lot but the weight distribution has always been an issue for me. I’m a smaller guy 5’8” 155 and I never feel like I’m applying good top pressure. I’m constantly getting crushed by guys much bigger than me and I’m like damn I need to be able to apply pressure lol. That constant pressure from the top wears people down quickly.

Haha, it irks me so much (as a 154lb 6'3 man) when big guys in he gym can just lay on me and it makes my life so difficult. Then, when I get on top, I have to focus so much not to be swept that I almost feel more comfortable on bottom lmao. Thanks, will try this!

I'm 5' 11' and flux between 150-160. Everyone I roll with is 180-220. I use the shoulder grab and shoulder to neck a lot. You can almost submit someone with it, especially with my Bony shoulders! To keep my position at or before the center point I do what I call the "fork lift" where I scoop the same side quad of my opponent and press in. This controls my position and severely limits and almost nulls their ability to shrimp out the back and recover guard. It's a good stall and pressure technique to help tire out my opponent to more easily set up future submissions! My gyms philosophy is concentrate on the basics and pressure, the submission will come!

Son of a biscuit this happened to me last night! Blue belt asks me what I wanna work on, I say pass his guard and hold him down a bit. Had my knee in his sternum, underhook on his far side arm and whoop! rolled me right over 😂 thanks for this, m8

the problem for me is how to attack from here. I want the far hand - but as I reach for it I shift my weight and get rolled over. Also some of the stronger big guys will post their hand on my head side hip in this position and now they have a good block. To prevent that I need to block it with my head side knee - but now loosen my pressure and get rolled over.

I very much enjoy your videos and have just started BJJ @ 67 (long story). I wondered if there was a video or I would request one on very new white belts. Once drills are over and open rolling starts I am completely clueless on what to do. My training partners (colored belts) say that is normal. Here is my thought; as a new person who is older but in decent shape and flexible would asking my rolling partner how I might help him? Meaning, him starting in a bad position, whatever that would provide benefit to him. As my first goal is to be accepted as a useful training partner. I know how the long the journey is, so don't feel like I need more than the most simple techniques, offensively or defensively. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Your videos are a source of inspiration to me thank you!

Hi! I'm a newbie here. I'm 2 weeks in, a female, and about 115LBS. In class, we focused on the bottom person to slip in the elbow and turn towards the opponent. With this approach, would that be a problem? I saw another one of your videos how you grabbed the arm with your arm so maybe that's the way to go.

As a newbie, when in the side control my focus has been more on where my knees are,one to his hip and one to his shoulder.I'm surely not getting enough pressure on his chest.

Hey man. I started Nogi bjj about 4 months ago and then gi 2 months ago. My first competition in nogi is coming up in 2 weeks. It's grappling industries and its not in the city I live in so it will be quite expensive with traveling. However 3 weeks after that there's a competition in the city I live in with a low admission fee so I thought why not compete in that one as well? But I'm also planning to compete again in June. So my question is do you think it's good for a white belt that has trained 4 months to go to that many competitions or do you think I should take it slower since losing over and over again in competitions could end up hurting my morale. Thanks in advance man love the channel.

Absolutely the way to go. I started in March and did my first tournament in august. I did 4 tournaments in 4 months. There’s nothing like the experience of getting live rounds at 100% against guys who are also still trying to figure out what’s going on to see where you are.
