I have just discovered this episode and I think this is a fantastic technique you have developed here. I would love to see what you make with these. If you are worried about them fading out with heat or time you could scan and print them. Maybe design some digital papers with them! ❤

Thank you so much for making this video. I was just about to try using thermal receipt paper for art and thought to do some research to see if anyone had experience with it. And right before I watched your video, I read an explanation of what solvents like your stamp cleaner react with thermal paper. The pigments in thermal paper are sort of embedded in the fibers, which them get released with heat, but when a solvent gets introduced, those pigments get pushed to the edge of the liquid. This is why the stamps developed such clear outlines at the edges of where the solvents were deposited on the paper, and also why some of the areas within the stamp design did not turn black.

These are really cool! My guess about the outlines on the images stamped with the cleaner is that the solvent dissolves whatever the heat reactive paper is coated with, and as it dries, it "collects" at the outlines

Thanks so much for the idea. I'm a nurse and when we got new cardiac monitors our old paper would not fit the new monitors. They were just going to throw rolls and rolls of the paper out. Well, you know how us journal makers are. I asked if I could have it. Up to this point I had only used the rolls as backing paper for snippets. I immediately tried it with a die and it worked perfect. I was working on a project while your video played so now I need to watch it again so I can use the other techniques. Danke dir

I just watched this video again, tried it using supermarket receipts :-). The easiest way to get a successful (attractive result) so far has been the application of gesso on the outline of a die cut. My supermarket thermal paper is VERY sensitive to heat so I have to do it very fast, the gesso acts like a heat-resist it seems... I'm having fun!

Wow! I have been doodling and drawing abstract stuff on shopping receipts. Many kinds of inks/dyes get messed up from contact with the part that turns black, so pens quit working. It never occurred to me that the back side might not be reactive! It also didn't occur to me to try paints and dyes--especially sprays. Ah, I was being lazy and working in an overcrowded space, so I never got out other stuff. Thank you!

Luise you are so creative and your ideas are brilliant!!! Having said that I must WARN you and all watching that Thermal Paper is toxic and contains high levels of BPA that goes into the skin through touch. I recently had the opportunity to get a case of it for free, and before I accepted I researched my exposure working with it and decided against it. We all get exposed to toxins through art supplies, so perhaps what I am concerned with, others would not be … but before everyone goes out and buys thermal paper they should look into the safety and have open eyes before working with it. BPA free paper usually has BPS which is also hazardous. Folks should look for "phenol free" paper...but not sure it works the same. ( your inventiveness and creativity is amazing…. Sorry to be a downer on such an amazing video, I just felt people needed to understand the risks involved with this material especially to children)

Luise, this IS Great!! You are playing w chemistry 😀 and finding great new things!! I certainly have never seen this. The air dry result looks like the negative image from old photos! The first thing you found is how the heat-sensitive paper reacts with other chemicals (gesso, water, stamp cleaning solvent). It would seem that other substances will also generate different reactions (oxyde inks?). Anyhow, several of these images are very elegant!

Hi there i was looking on youtube and not finding anyone that did what i dìd so its interesting to see different ways of mark making and printing the image i found this out on my own about over a month ago do im not too late seems like but something ive done is if you get dettal spray cleaner you can erase the thermal parts and hair spray also does the trick i love ehat youve done its definitely given me some ideas myself but i used the dettal spray antibacterial liquid and used a brush to paint and layer it slowly to make a landscape myself keep doing what your doing i think its fab 😊 😀

These are really beautiful. What an interesting art journey you had that night. If you scanned your results and laser printed them I wonder what kind of transfer you might get… or just by marking up the copy. That might extend the transitive nature of the paper, however indirectly. I have often photographed receipts because in a few months they are completely blank whether kept in a sealed envelope or not. Anyway thanks for your intrepid experiment.. I enjoyed your excitement about this unusual technique.
