There's a lot videos on how to draw/render, but not enough videos about how to design like this one. REally appreciate this.

I'm really enjoying your videos about weapons. I've tried several times and it always went wrong, but after watching these videos, I'm motivated again. I'm going to start practicing again and try to improve more and more. Whenever there's more content on the subject and it's possible to create another video, I'll be here to watch.

Nice video; I have a lot to say. I'll preface that I appreciate you mentioning cultivating a healthy mindset when it comes to art. We all as artists have trouble appreciating our own work, especially during the steepest parts of the learning process. It is in light of that that I want to be very careful about how I say my piece, so that I can maximize the utility of my criticism. I have a lot of opinions on concept weapon design, and sometimes the demons get out a little. But for what its worth, my whole comment comes from a place of love and respect. I think that there is a very important part of the design process that was untouched upon in this video. A fictional weapon, whether sci-fi, fantasy, etcetera, should (in my opinion) present a credible illusion of functionality. You do mention this briefly when discussing the concept of anchors, and you (and other artists) likely understand this tacitly, but I believe this step is so very important and deserves much more time and thought. This is a problem I've had with 95% of concept guns I've seen, including big name IPs and, unfortunately, every piece of yours that was shown. Designing from existing guns helps yes, but the more iterations and fantastical elements are added, the higher my disbelief is forced to be suspended. It is not, for the record, the inclusion of "unrealistic" elements that I have a problem with but rather the fact that I have basically never seen a fantastical design that is a great deal more concerned with being consistent with its of set of well considered rules than chasing signs (semiotics). I think the most egregious area for all concept weapons (guns or otherwise) that I have seen has to be issues of ergonomics. This is because, although I raise my eyebrow at the inclusion of pipes, vents, and spikes that I strongly doubt have a well considered function in service of some mechanism behind them; I can charitably dismiss them, the core conceit of concept weapons being handheld devices designed for humanoid users is nigh unavoidable. It is unfortunate then that most designs, even the ones that include a stock and a grip, look downright horrid to wield. The causes of this are varied and many, from the common issues like """functional""" pieces being in the way of the user, to genuinely ubiquitous issues like weapons being too big. Granted, I recognize that I am more prone than most to being bothered by these details because the general population, including creatives, are less knowledgeable in arms than I am (I'll spare the credentials but I do know what I'm talking about). That said, I strongly believe that good design is deep- deeper than 99% of people will realize. Even for people who are somewhat more knowledgeable, depth of design usually just manifests as that barely intangible "looks right" factor. It may be the case that my creative values are not yours, but if they are (or just compatible perhaps), I strongly recommend that you have a longer think about the what and the why of arms design. It can be so easy to just add details that are ill considered, and end up with a corny, ugly, nonfunctional concept weapon. I'm not necessarily suggesting you design things action outward (I do, but you don't have to), rather develop and understanding of why things are the way they are and use that to refine your concepts. Lastly, I don't mean to say all this to discourage you (Creo Solus/reader). Please continue to create and iterate, just remember to refine your concept with a strong understanding of both how and why. Lord knows I've filled drawing books with weapons that fail on every count I brought up here and more. But as a person with knowledge and opinions, I felt it was necessary to dole out this criticism, if for no other goal than so that you all make more things that I like.

Small addition: There must analyzing of your references depending of that you want create. Mindless concepting or photobashing couldn't get good results without understanding of basics.

Blender guru is a good place to start, many blender modeling skills will transfer to modeling guns. So if you practice modeling simple objects and then slowly move on to more complex ones. Hopefully this helps.

@CreoSolus

I tend to take a similar approach however I'll use references for a pose and others for clothes and accessories. But I'm not a qualified character designer, I just draw characters for personal use. So I can't give much more advice than that.

@CreoSolus
@CreoSolus 3 ай бұрын
My best advice starting out is references. Always constantly look back at others artists work to see what they did. And how you can use that to improve your work. 2nd is take your time art takes time to master so don't worry if you don't get it on the first time. Good luck
